Year 5 Much Ado About Nothing?
Date: 21st Mar 2022 @ 7:38am
A huge congratulations to all the Year 5 children who took part in the RSC's performance of William Shakespeare's, 'Much Ado About Nothing'. We were joined by 9 other Blackpool schools as part of the RSC's Associate Schools Programme, which has been created to support pupils in building confidence, resiliance and speaking and listening skills. After several weeks of practising, learning lines and dress-rehersals, the performance was perfectly delivered infront of a packed Grand Theatre in Blackpool. We are all so proud of the children who took part - what a great experience!

Today in Year 1 we enjoyed our History Day! The first question we explored was, why do you think we remember Christopher Columbus? We became History detectives to explore the answer to this question! Clues were placed around our room, as if in an art gallery. We worked in pairs to write simple words that came to mind whilst looking at each clue. We then came back together to collect all our ideas from the clues and images we had seen!

We also took part in some special WBD activities. We imagined we worked for Mr Willy Wonka and designed our very own magical sweet to be made in his factory. We had to describe what it looked and tasted like using interesting adjectives. In Maths, we continued with the chocolate theme and used pictograms and tally charts to compare the colours of sweets in a Smarties tube. We found out they were all very different!

By completing a scavenger hunt, we have learnt lots of new things about the life and works of one of the world's most influential people... did you know we still use words and phrases coined (made up) by Shakespeare? Over 1700 words in the English language are believed to have been invented by him, or introduced to his audience because of him. Gossip, fashionabble and nervy are just some!

This week Reception have been learning all about Antarctica, what the climate is like there and finding out about different animals that live there. We have been looking at world maps and globes and identified that the top and bottoms parts of the globe have the coldest climate and in the middle is where it is warmer because of the equator. We found out that Antarctica is one of the 7 world continents and is home to the penguin species. During class discussions, exploring globes and atlases, playing with small world figures and reading different information books we found out lots of interesting facts and learnt lots of new words including; continent, climate, north and south pole, temperatire, globe, equator, blubber and carnivore. We produced our own child initiated writing about the different animals used the globes to locate different places, looked at how he animals had adapted to their environment and created out own narratives.

This half term, Year Two are creating our own glove puppets based on an animal from some of the stories we have read to inspire our Writing journey. After some experimenting with which material is best to use to join two materials together we decided we would sew. Yesterday, we spent some time learning to thread a needle, tie a knot in the thread and begin to sew. We all enjoyed it despite it being very tricky! Miss Duckworth and Miss Hooson were proud of the determination the children demonstrated and how supportive they were of the peers. Keep this up for when we sew our final products!

Last week, we had our favourite day- No Pen Day! Pupils and Teachers alike put out pens down for a full day and focused on using our communication skills. Throughout the day, we worked collaboratively to continue our Reading into Writing and Maths journey's.
We continued our Reading into Writing journey by learning about different tenses. We identified we can tell a sentences tense by finding the verb- to show matching past and present tense verbs we had to find the person with the verb of the opposite tense before sorting a variety of verbs and sentences into the tenses they were written.
In Maths, we consolidated our knowledge of giving change by playing a game of Mathopoly. For each square we landed on we had to calculate how much change a person would get depending on how much they spent and the coin they used to pay.
In the afternoon, we enjoyed continuing our learning of Hinduism with Mrs Bunday and PE with Mr Willetts.
Date: 23rd Jan 2022 @ 10:55am
This week, we had our half-termly No Pen Day! This is a day where nobody, including the teachers, can use any form of pen or pencil!! We have to get very creative to be able to continue with the journeys we are in for each of our lessons. This is how we did it this time...
During Maths, we used spaghetti sticks to work out multiplication sums. To do this, we researched the ancient Japanese stick method where you have to put the number of sticks down in a diamond shape to represent the numbers you want to multiply. Next, you have to count how many times the sticks cross over and that is your answer. It took us a while to work it out, but once we had the hang of it, a lot of children said they preferred this method!!
For Reading into Writing, we continued with our 'Persuasive Letters' journey. The children had to cut out a jumbled up letter and put it in the correct order. We then used the Chromebooks to research the benefits of having a support dog in school.
In the afternoon, we made three types of paper aeroplanes to see which one would travel the furthest. We talked about the different designs and how air resistance would have an impact. To finish the day off, we went outside to test them!
Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 11:58am
For No Pen Day, we put our pens down and picked up our language! In Reading into Writing we focused on the book Julian is a Mermaid and linked it to LGBTQ+. We hot seated Nana and Julian to ask questions around their thoughts, feelings and actions in the story. We then each took a section of the story to role play and add dialogue to.
In Maths we focused on our timetables and completed a loop card game around the room. We really had to ensure we were using our listening skills and calculating mentally. We then completed a tarsia in groups linking to the timetables.
We had a great day and we enjoyed using our communication skills and letting our pens have a rest!
Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 4:40pm
Today in Year 1 we had a visit from the character in the story ‘Lost and Found.’ It was the boy! We were all very excited to talk to him and ask him lots of questions. The boy talked to the children about his journey to the South Pole. He explained what he saw, what he heard and how he felt. He then showed us the route he took across the Atlantic and Southern Ocean on our big world map. We gathered lots of information from talking to the boy that will help us to write our recounts!

After reading the story we received a letter from the Jolly Postman asking for our help! The letter explained that all the Jolly Postman’s post had blown out of his bag and got muddled up! The Jolly Postman didn’t know which were letters and which were not, so our task was to help him!

Also, describing the features of the Gruffalo, through the Gruffalo Song, really helped us remember what he looked like- just in case we ever came across one ourselves!
"Purple prickles down his back" Isaac
"A black tongue, orange eyes and claws" Charlie
"He had horns" Mercedes.
"Green wart at the end of his nose" Evelyn.
Date: 19th Nov 2021 @ 8:01am
For our Reading into Writing Journey this week we have been developing our story writing skills so we can write a descriptive story about Rama and Sita. We have been learning to extend our sentences using conjunctions and making the sentences more interesting by thinking of interesting adjectives. We then shared our ideas to write a paragraph of the story as a small group together.
