How will the school prepare and support my child when moving to a new school or class?
At Boundary Primary School we recognise that transition can be difficult for a child with SEND and take steps to ensure that any transition is as smooth as possible.
Induction into Foundation Stage/Nursery
Parents of all children starting in our Foundation Stage are invited to attend induction events. In addition to this, if your child has SEND then further meetings prior to your child joining us will take place. The nature of these meetings will be tailored to the needs of the individual child and may include outside agencies such as an Educational Psychologist, staff from pre school settings, speech and language therapist etc.
Moving to another class in school
All children get to meet their new teacher in their new classroom prior to September. Sometimes a child with SEND will need an enhanced transfer when moving to their next class. This may involve additional visits to their new teacher and their new class room.
Year 6/7 transition
The Year 6 teacher will meet with members of staff from each Secondary school to discuss each child. Information is passed on at these meetings. For children with SEND, the SENCo from Primary and Secondary meet to discuss in detail each child. All relevant paper work is exchanged. Occasionally, a child with SEND may need enhanced transfer to Secondary School. This could involve, extra visits to the new school, meeting with key members of staff or the provision of a staff buddy so that they have someone to turn to if they need extra support. All medical issues are also discussed prior to your child starting Secondary School.
Moving to another school
We contact the school SENCo and ensure that he/she knows about any special arrangements or support that need to be made for your child. All relevant information and records are passed on to the new school as soon as possible. A follow up phone call to ensure that there are no issues takes place between the SENCo from each school. Any social care paperwork or information will also be passed on to the new school. Information is passed on to the new class teacher in advance and in most cases, a planning meeting will take place with the new teacher.
