Year 2: Blog items

Spot!

Date: 25th Mar 2021 @ 3:45pm

This afternoon we focussed our art on the story 'The Dot'. We started with 2 dots on the page and went on to create a class masterpiece! We used the skill of quilling to roll pieces of paper to make a 3D piece of art. This took great resilience and perseverence as we rolled all of these tiny pieces. We ended up with very sticky hands from all of that glue!

We found it to be very peaceful and theraputic and we are extremely pleased with the end result.

Glorious Sunflowers

Date: 25th Mar 2021 @ 3:38pm

In Science, we planted our own sunflowers. We learnt what plants need to survive: sunlight, water, the correct temperature and time. Every day we have been watering our plants and watching them grown. They have gone from being a seed to a germinated seed, seedling and now it is getting towards a young plant.

We can't wait to see our flowers turn into an adult plant!

Red Nose Day Fun!

Date: 19th Mar 2021 @ 3:37pm

We had a great time raising money for Comic Relief today! We all swapped one piece of our uniform for something red to show our support. This afternoon we had a laugh a minute with some classic jokes and we played 'Pin the Nose on the Panda'. Thank you for all of your contributions for such a good cause!

Riddles hunt!

Date: 16th Mar 2021 @ 4:16pm

Today in Reading into Writing, Year 2 went on a riddle hunt. We worked in pairs to try to solve riddles and get the most points. We will be going on to writing our own riddles very soon for you to solve!

Carving into Colour

Date: 9th Mar 2021 @ 8:43pm

As part of our Art learning this half term, Year Two have begun to explore the work of two famous artists, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.  This week we explored the later work of Henri Mattise.  We discovered that as he became older, Matisse suffered from ill health which prevented him from painting.  He began to cut into coloured paper with scissors and in doing this he invented a new medium, 'carving into colour'.

Taking inspiration from Matisse's artwork we created our own pieces using only scissors and coloured paper.  We had to carefully consider lines, colour and shape when creating our masterpieces.

Let them Grow!

Date: 9th Mar 2021 @ 8:20pm

This week Year Two were finally all back together in the classroom and we were so happy to see each other.  To support our Science topic on plants, we had fun planting sunflower seeds.  We are going to take care of these in school until the weather gets a little warmer.  Then we will be sending them home and seeing who can grow the tallest sunflower.  Good luck everyone!

Welcome to Spring Term

Date: 15th Jan 2021 @ 9:58am

Well, it hasn't been the start to the Spring term that we had planned but that hasn't stopped Year Two learning lots of new things.  Some of you have been brilliant with your remote learning on Seesaw and we want this to continue.

We have seen some marvellous examples of work, including finding features in non-chronological reports in Reading into Writing and some great problem solving involving arrays in Maths.

Remember that Miss Hooson and Mrs Fielding are here for you if you need any help and we will keep checking in with you at home to make sure things are running smoothly.  Keep going Year Two, we can do this!

Rainbow Laces!

Date: 11th Dec 2020 @ 4:44pm

On Rainbow Laces day, we learnt about stereotyping in sport. We discussed who imagined when we said the sports: gymnastics, ballet, football and swimming. We looked at famous males and females in these sports and the amazing accomplishments that they have achieved. By the end of the session, we had a good understanding that it doesn't matter what gender we are, we should play sports that interest us most.
We learnt that we should not stereotype people or judge them based on their looks or genders. Be who you want to be and do the things that make you smile!

Christmas 2020 at Boundary

Date: 18th Dec 2020 @ 3:00pm

Although it has looked very different from previous years, we have still celebrated the festive season at Boundary, albeit it in our bubbles and via whole school virtual assemblies.

Our carol service was a beautiful event, witnessed, shared and enjoyed (virtually!) by the whole school – a testament to the resilience, patience and determination of both our children and our staff.

During the week, bubbles have enjoyed their Christmas dinner. The hall was set out beautifully with crackers to pull, hats to wear and the odd poor joke to tell for each year group bubble to enjoy their Christmas dinner on their special day! A huge ‘Thank You’ goes to all the staff for making it run smoothly, especially Debbie and all the catering and welfare staff for all their hard work in making our delicious dinner.

Each bubble also enjoyed their party day this week, with children wearing their Christmas jumpers and their best party clothes! Each class spent the last afternoon of this term watching a special virtual pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and eating popcorn.

Although 2020 has not been the year we would have hoped for, our children, staff and parents and carers have once again united to create a supportive, nurturing environment for the children of Boundary, ensuring that each child continues to receive the best education and start in life despite the events of this year.

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your ongoing support during these strange and difficult times and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, safe and happy New Year and we look forward to welcoming you all back in January.

Religious Education - a summary of our learning so far....

Date: 11th Dec 2020 @ 1:00pm

At Boundary, our curious and tolerant children have had a busy few weeks learning lots about different religions and we can’t wait to share what we have done…

Reception have been busy learning about the Christmas story and filming our nativity in their outdoor area. They loved dressing up and re-enacting the nativity play.

This half term in Year 1 for RE, the children have been learning all about Jesus and the Christmas Story.  They have learnt about the roles of a family and why babies are special. They have read the Christmas Story and then ordered the events.  This week, they worked together in groups, to sort out Christmas cards into ones with a religious meaning and ones without.

Year 2 having been exploring the question...

Why do Christians say that Jesus is the 'Light of the World'?

They children have learnt about how lights are used by Christians in celebration and to mark special events, what advent means and how they can be a light to other people!

Year 3 have been learning about Islam and who Muslims follow. They have learnt about the characteristics that the prophet Mohammed showed and how Muslims can be charitable. The children have reflected on this and how they can apply it to the role models in our lives.

In Year 4, they have been learning about Christianity and how Christians show love to everyone. The children have done this by looking at parables such as The Good Samaritan and The Unforgiving Servant. These parables have told them that it is important to 'Love thy neighbour' and treat everyone around them with care and respect.

This term in Year 5 they have been learning about Islam. They looked at Ramadan, The 5 Pillars of Islam, The Holy Qur'an and Hajj.

The Holy book of Islam is the Qur'an, Muslims clean themselves in water that has been blessed, before they hold it. - Lacey-Morgan

The pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) is one of the five pillars of Islam and Muslims must do it at least once in their life if they are physically capable of it. Ihram is the name given to the special spiritual state in which pilgrims wear two white sheets of seamless cloth during their pilgrimage. - Myles

Year 6 children have been learning about the Hindu belief in reincarnation, karma and the 4 Ashramas (stages of life). The children have reflected on the milestones they have achieved in their lives already and possible future ones.

Year 2, Our term so far...

Date: 9th Dec 2020 @ 3:54pm

Year Two have had a busy half term, crammed with lots of learning. From calculating and finding number bonds in Maths, to appraising and creating Christmas
songs in Music. We have been Super Scientists by planning investigations about everyday materials and we really enjoyed using primary sources in History to find out more about why we remember soldiers from The First World War.

Float your Boat!

Date: 19th Nov 2020 @ 8:12pm

As part of our Science topic, Everyday Materials, pupils in Year Two were set a challenge to design a boat to carry an 'orange' across a river.  We were given a range of materials including paper, clingfilm, tinfoil, sponge and fabric.  We then had to use these materials to create a boat that would float.  During this investigation we found that the sponge floated well initially, but when it began to absorb the water it became too heavy and started to sink.  We also found that tinfoil was a useful material as it was waterproof and it didn't absorb any water.  Then some of us had the brilliant idea of covering the sponge with tinfoil, this made a great boat as it floated well and the tinfoil kept the sponge from absorbing the water.  We really enjoyed working in small groups to tackle this challenge and we found out a lot about the properties of some everyday materials.

Remember the Fallen

Date: 13th Nov 2020 @ 3:56pm

On Wednesday, Year Two joined the rest of the school to take part in a Remembrance Service.  We made poppies and planted them in our school Remembrance Garden.  Each poppy had the name of a World War One soldier lost in battle.  We thought of these soldiers as we participated in a two minute silence.  Earlier in the week, we also painted pictures of poppies and decorated a soldier silhouette to be displayed in our school hall.  We have also had some brilliant examples of our Remembrance BLT.

Building Bridges

Date: 5th Nov 2020 @ 4:11pm

Year Two had an exciting start to the new half term.  As an introduction to our new Science topic, Everyday Materials, we were set a challenge to build a bridge out of paper. We experimented with folding paper and creating different shapes to see how many counters we could support.  Our strongest bridge held over 100 counters, amazing for a single piece of paper!!

Stranded!

Date: 18th Oct 2020 @ 6:27pm

Year 2 found themselves stranded on a deserted island. We had a think about what the essentials to survive would be and what things would make us happy. We wrote our final list of essentials on the ground in chalk to help any others that may get stranded in the future. Luckily, we found our way back to the classroom safe and sound!

It's election day!

Date: 2nd Oct 2020 @ 6:16pm

We had a very exciting day voting for our new school council representatives. Each child had the opportunity to present their manifestos and their peers voted for who they thought would do the best job! We spoke about having a democracy and ensuring that we had the chance to be heard and vote. Well done to the 2 children who were chose to represent their class this year, we are sure that they will do us proud!
