Year 2: Blog items
You can count on me, like 1, 2, 3...

Year Two have been working really hard on understanding place value in numbers up to 100. We have been counting on and back within 100 and thinking about how many tens and how many ones make up different 2-digit numbers. We have been using a range of manipulatives, such as bead strings, place value counters, Base 10, Numicon and tens frames, to show different 2-digit numbers.

As an introduction to our new Design Technology topic in which we will be creating healthy fruit snacks we spent the afternoon tasting different fruits such as pineapple, mango, strawberries, kiwi and Honey Dew melon alongside some other common fruits. After tasting the different fruits we came up with some words to describe the look, smell and taste of each fruit such as: sour, sweet, crunchy, delicious, succulent, yummy, round and disgusting. Despite not liking them all, everybody tried a little of everything.

Year Two have had a great first week! We had fun combining our Science topic on Living things and our Art topic on Sculpture, to create some interesting animal sculptures. We cut, folded and shaped paper to create some fantastic, colourful creatures. Then we got super sticky when we were challenged to create an animal sculpture from marshmallows and cocktail sticks. We all showed a great Growth Mindset, trying our best and helping each other.

Year Two had a fantastic final session with Forest School this week. We had fun mixing potions and making food in the mud kitchen area. We refreshed our knotting skills from earlier in the year by using rope and tarpaulin to create a teepee. We picked and ate our own wild fruits including raspberries, blackberries and goosebeeries. Then we consolidated our Science knowledge of food chains, prey and predators with an exciting game of 'Hungry Squirrel'.
As a special end of year treat, we sang songs around the campfire as we all took turns to melt marshmellows to make delicious s'mores.

As part of our Computing curriuclum, Year Two have been experimenting with the program Paintz. We have been practising how to use the different tools such as draw, paint, fill and make lines. We looked at different styles of artwork from famous artists including French artist Georges Seurat and Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. We then used these pieces as an inspiration for our own artwork.

We had a fantastic sports week and we were very lucky that the sun was shining for us. We made our teachers proud with vast amount of characteristics we displayed this week! We worked brilliantly in teams yet. We managed to be competitive yet supportive of each other and a good time was had all around.

We have been learning all about 3D shapes. Here we were sorting 3D shapes by identifying and counting their faces. We also identified the shapes of the faces and decided the bast way to sort our shapes into groups. We also arranged our shapes in order of the least to most faces.

It has been RSE week in Boundary this week. Year Two have been looking at the differences between males and females. We started off by discussing if certain clothes or toys were specifically for males or females and this lead us into a discussion about gender stereotyping.
We then looked at the differences between male and female newborn babies and animals. We also learnt the proper names for male and female body parts. We discussed why it is important that we use the correct names for these body parts and how we should talk to a trusted adult if we feel uncomfortable about any physical contact.
Year Two showed great maturity throughout our learning in this topic area.

We were lucy enough to experience a dance lesson with a wonderful lady from the Royal Ballet Company. We created our own dances and movements based on the rainforest and we loved it! We linked it to our Science topic and thought about the animals and plants that we would see to inspire us.
Date: 24th Jun 2021 @ 11:32am
We were very lucky to experience Now Press Play! We wnt on a virtual journey around the world idenitfying habitats and transforming our bodies inot the animals that live there. We were shocked to find out how us humans are destroying habitats and risking the lives of animals.

This week, Boundary Primary School hosted a day of dance workshops. The children in Year Two and Year Five each recieved a dance lesson from Sarah Gough (from the Royal Ballet School and Blue Moose Dance Company).
Boundary hosted dance training sessions and a staff meeting attended by teachers from other local schools and staff and pupils both learnt a lot throughout the day.
Year Five explored the topic of coasts through dance and Year Two visited the rainforest and the animals you would find there. A fantastic time was had by all!

As an introduction to our new topics of Animals and their habitats in Science and Sculpture in Art, we created our own animal paper sculptures. We had to listen carefully to each instruction and show many Boundary characteristics such as patience, resilience and creativity.

This week, Year Two have been investigating the properties of 2-D shapes. We have been comparing 2-D shapes and counting sides and vertices to classify shapes. We had great fun using an interactive geo-board to create a range of 2-D shapes. We made triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons and hexagons. We found out about regular and irregular shapes and we were challenged to make as many different triangles, pentagons and hexagons as we could. We learnt that the same shape can be made in lots of different ways and to classify a 2-D shape we need to count its sides or vertices.

In Science, we have been learning about electricity. We found out that in order for an electric current to flow around a circuit there must be no breaks in it. We were given a varity of scenario cards with different circuits on. We made predicitons as to whether these were working circuits and then tested them. After testing, we recorded our results and found out that our predictions were brilliant!

In Geography, we continued our learning on Australia. We learnt about natural and manmade landmarks. We started by finding some famous landmarks on a map of the UK and then went on to compare these to Australian landmarks.
In groups, we were given a wallet of jigsaw pieces. We had to piece these together to make 5 famous Australia landmarks. We then had names and facts to try to match up to our landmarks. Finally we located these famous attractions on a map of Australia! We just wish we could have visited these amazing places in real life!
Date: 10th May 2021 @ 4:25pm
Year Two worked hard in pairs to solve a division problem based on the story of 100 Hungry Ants by Elinor Pinczes. We worked together to find all the possible ways of dividing 36 or 24 groups of ants. We tried to work systematically to make sure we found all the possibilities and we had some great discussions about using known facts to help us find all the ways. This also led to some great reasoning about odd and even numbers.
Miss Hooson and Mrs Fielding were very impressed with the perseverance and stamina shown whilst completing this task.

After listening to and appraising aboriginal music, we moved on to using instruments made from natural materials such as wood and our body parts to compose our own pieces in small groups. We learnt what a crotchet was and we counted in beats of 4. In our teams, we composed our piece and practised, ready to perform next week.
Date: 26th Apr 2021 @ 10:09am
In music we started to look at aboriginal music. We linked this to our geography topic and decided to focus on Australian music. We listened to and appraised a variety of Australian Aboriginal music and we found it extremely interesting. We realised that to make music they used natural resources and their voices. We went outside and used resources that we could find in our playground, wooden instruments and also our bodies to compose our own piece of music.

As the Year 2 introduction to Electricity, we completed an exciting circuit of activities! We found that we could use static electricity to make our hair stand to attention and that by just rubbing a balloon against our jumpers we could make it stick to the wall! It was quite tricky but lots of us persevered until we were successful!
We also used static electricity to make salt and pepper jump from a bowl onto a comb! We loved watching this happen.
Finally, we used the snap circuits. We followed instructions to make weird and wonderful things. Some of us used the circuits to make alien sounds, some people made a fan fly across the room and some of us even made our circuits sing Happy Birthday!
We had a wonderful afternoon of learning and we can't wait to find out more about electricity.
