Reception Plant Britain- the next phase!

Last November, our Eco Warriors from Reception, Year1 and Year2 planted spring bulbs in the pond area of our school grounds as part of the BBC Plant Britain project.
Countryfile Plant Britain wants to get everyone planting in a big, ambitious two-year project where we can all do our bit in the battle against climate change and to help wildlife and our own well being.
All the hard work was worth it because the spring bulbs have now grown and are looking beautiful! They have definitely enhanced our woodland pond area- take a look at our photos.

This week in Reception we have been learning about the importance of keeping ourself and our bodies healthy. As a class we discussed different ways we an keep healthy including having a balanced diet, regular exercise, plenty of sleep, keeping clean and regularly brushing our teeth and keeping ourselves hydrated. We produced some fantastic pieces of writing and even enjoyed making our own healthy snack 'a fruit kebab'. Outside in the garden we enjoyed bathing the babies. brushing the false teeth, buying healthy snack from our shop and exercising on our balance bikes.
Reception Comic Relief- Super Heroes!

Reception had a great time dressing up as their super heroes to raise money for Comic Relief.
Marvel Super Heroes, The Justice League and the NHS were just some of the many heroes found in Reception on Friday!

Reception Whose that trip trapping over my bridge?

This week Reception have been reading the traditional tale 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. The children have enjoyed retelling the story both indoors and in the garden. Inside the children used the puppets and props to retell the story in thie own words. The created their own story maps and drew pictures from the story adding labels. Outside the children worked together using the large wooden bricks to build their own bridge. They then took it in turns to play the different characters.

Our Eco Warriors, Isaac and Charlie have been very busy making sure everyone recycles ALL the waste paper in Reception.
They have also been checking that all food waste goes in the red bin after breakfast and snack time.
" Somebody put their fruit in the grey bin so I took it out and put it in the red bin!" Isaac.
"i found paper in the grey bin- not the brown recycling bag!" Charlie.

This week in Reception the children have been talking about the importance of reusing and recycling unwanted waste. We collected a range of different bottles, cartons, boxes, tubs and tubs and used them to create our own junk model animals. We use tape and glue to attach the items together and them used different matterials and paint to decorate them. We made some fantastic wild animlas including parrots, elephants, giraffes, snakes and monkeys.

The children have enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characte. We had some fantastic costumes including Harry Potter, Willy Wonka, Little Red Riding Hood, The Cat in Hat and Goldilocks. The children enjoyed listening and retelling their favourite stories. drawing, painting and writing about their favourite characters and making their own special bookmarks. The children are looking forward to spending their book tokens and getting a brand new book.
Reception Pancake Day- Holly Class.

Today, Holly Class have been busy making pancakes and choosing our own special topping!
We measured the ingredients then mixed them together before Mrs McAllister cooked them. It was such fun watching her flip them in the pan. Luckily, none of them hit the floor or the ceiling! We then chose our own toppings and filled our faces with the most "sweet" and "awesome" pancakes ever!

"Cook it in the pan and then flip it!" Charlie.
"I like chocolate spread and strawberrries" Amelia.
"I like syrup" Oscar.

Reception Pancake Day in Willow Class

Willow Class have been busy celebrating Shrove Tuesday and making pancakes today. We followed the recipe to make the pancake mix. We need eggs, flour and milk. We worked together to whisk the mix and make sure was no lumps. We had lots of different toppings including strawberries, chocolate spread, lemon, sugar, syrup, bananas and blueberries. The children helped to chop and prepare the fruit using the knives carefully. When the mix was ready Mrs McAllister made the pancakes by pouring the mix into the pan. We waited for it to cook and then flipped it in the air. The children thoroughly enjoyed tasting the different toppings.

Reception The Tiger Who Came To Tea

Reception have been reading the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea. We have been using the props at the storytelling table to help us sequence the story. We have also been painting tigers, using a rnge of materials at the creative table to make tigers and role playing the story in the home corner. The children have produced some lovely pieces of child initiated writing in continuous provision

Reception enjoyed finding out about the number 100. We counted out 100 cubes to see how many there were and talked about numbers that are more or less than 100. We then used the numerals to make our own 100 pictures.
Reception Bears, bears and more bears

Reception enjoyed bringing their favourites teddies to school. We compared all the different teddies and talked about how they were similar and different. Mrs Clark brought her very old teddy bear in to show us and we discussed how teddy bears had changed over time. The children enjoyed sorting different bears, drawing and writing about their own bear and using loose parts to make their own teddy bear face.

Reception Chinese New Year Celebrations!

This week we have been celebrating Chinese New Year!
We decorated our home corner and made Chinese lanterns and dragons. The children learned the skill of folding paper into a concertina and attaching a handle and sticks to their work. Ribbon dancing, fan dancing and dragon dancing was enjoyed by everyone and we read The Chinese New Year Story (how the new year animals were chosen) and wrote about our facvourite animal from the story. This year it is The Year of the Tiger!

This week Reception have been learning all about Antarctica, what the climate is like there and finding out about different animals that live there. We have been looking at world maps and globes and identified that the top and bottoms parts of the globe have the coldest climate and in the middle is where it is warmer because of the equator. We found out that Antarctica is one of the 7 world continents and is home to the penguin species. During class discussions, exploring globes and atlases, playing with small world figures and reading different information books we found out lots of interesting facts and learnt lots of new words including; continent, climate, north and south pole, temperatire, globe, equator, blubber and carnivore. We produced our own child initiated writing about the different animals used the globes to locate different places, looked at how he animals had adapted to their environment and created out own narratives.

Reception Meet Danny Determination

This week the children were introduced to the characteristic monster Danny Determination. Danny Determination taught us that you have to keep on trying and not give up no matter how hard it might be. Children showed determination with their phonics, writing and maths- even using the new sports equipment outside.

The classrooms in Reception are alive with the sound of music!
Each week the children enjoy singing along to their favourite songs and playing a range of instruments-. This week they sang a a phase 3 letter sound song, played a congo drum to keep a steady beat and used polar animals to make a pattern song.

The children have been busy exploring ice in the outside area. The ice was simply placed on a tray and left for the children to make their own observations, use new vocabulary they had learned that week and show collaboration.

Reception Who will escape the quickest?

Today Recpetion took part in the whole school No Pen Day! Recpetion were faced with a bit of a challenge. Marshmellow the snow monster had used his magic powers to freeze Elsa, Ana, Kristoff and Sven. We have to work together to see which meduim would help them escape the quickest. We discussed which meduims we could use including washing up liquid, salt, warm water and a scrubby brushy. As a class we made and prediction and talk about why we thought that. The children had some fantastic discussions and made some superb observations about what was happening. They even learnt some new scientific words including melting, freezing, liquid, solid and temperature.

This week in school we launch the WOW Walk to School Campaugn where the children learnt about how walking to school can benefit their health and wellbeing. We also discussed how less cars on the road can have a positive effect on the environment. Back in the classroom we discussed the importance of keep ourselves safe whilst crossing the road. We were visited by our School Crossing Officier Zoe who gave us some top safety tips.
Always stop, look and listen
Find a safe place to cross e.g. a pedestrian crossing or a Zebra crossing
Always hold an adults hand
Don't run incase you fall over.
Never cross between parked cars
After our visit we made a road outside in the garden and put her advise into action.
Reception Walking in a Winter Wonderland

This week we have been learning all about the season of winter. We have been talking about how the temperature is colder and the days are much shorter. We have been observing the changes in our outdoor area and discussing ourobservations with our friends.

Our classroom has also been transformed into a winter wonderland where we have been reading wintery stories, solving winter maths problems and doing some fantastic winter themed writing in the writng areas.
Reception Now Press Play...The Christmas Story

The children of Reception have been learning about why Christians celebrate Christmas and this week we listened to the Christmas Story using the headphones. They followed the instructions and went on an exciting journey to Bethlehem where baby Jesus was born.

We had a very special visitor to our Reception Christmas Party this week- Father Christmas! The children were so excited! After dancing and singing and playing games, such as pass the parcel, they heard sleigh bells ringing and just like that- he appeared at our door!
He listened to what each child wanted for Christmas and then gave them all a present!

You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man!
Yes- you've guessed it! Reception have been enjoying the story of The Gingerbread Man. We have been sequencing the story and discussing the different characters, designing our own gingerbread men and even had an outdoor bakery! However, the most exciting part was that we were able to practice our handwriting outside on our new blackboards that Mrs McAllister installed.
