In Reading into Writing we have been looking at discussion text and pulling out the features. Today we focussed on rhetorical questions, emotive language and facts/statistics. We completed various activities in teams around the room. By doing this, we upleveled our emotive vocabulary, created a bank of useful rhetorical questions and defined the difference between fact and opinion.

Year 4 - Folktales

Date: 18th Apr 2023 @ 3:40pm

We have started this half term by reading lots of examples of folktales. We found the features of a folktale, which we made a list of and then today we reread the folktales we read yesterday and highlighted them. We can't wait to get our creative juices flowing when we write our own.

This experience will help the children when they plan, draft and publish their own scripts next week.

Year 1 Supertato and The Evil Pea!

Date: 29th Mar 2023 @ 6:05pm

This week we have read the story Supertato as an introduction to our next Reading into Writing journey - letters. Throughout the week, letters from characters in the story have arrived in our classrooms! We have read each letter and found the features using a set criteria. One day one of the letters arrived but it was all mixed up! The Evil Pea set us a task to put the letter back in order if we wanted a chance to save Supertato. He has been causing all sorts of mischief this week!

Year 6 - Dan Worsley assembly

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 3:01pm

Today we were treated to an assembly from Dan Worsley. Once again, he discussed what it takes to be an author and why he enjoys writing books so much. He then read a story from one his 'Impossible Tales' books, all about a boy with magical snot! Let's just say we were all pretty grossed out by it!

Year 4 - Dan Worsley Workshop

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 2:52pm

Year 4 meet Dan Worsley

After a whole-school assembly, Year 4 had the pleasure of an all day writing workshop and one to one feedback session with Dan Worsley. Beginning with an impossible tale told by the author himself, the children were challenged with writing their own short story about a sea creature. After designing their own and thinking about the 'creature's features' they had to tell the story of how the creature came to arrive on a beach and then write a witness account including as much description as they could!
The children relished the opportunity to 'perform' their impossible tale in front of their class and Dan.

Thank you so much for coming Dan, we had an INCREDIBLE day with you!

Today Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic story telling experience with Dan Worsley. We all used fantastic listening skills whilst Dan told us a very exciting, funny and engaging story 'Junk in the Trunk.' We could all remember lots of details from the story from the brilliant pictures Dan protrayed whilst using lots of description!

Year 1 Disgusting Sandwiches!

Date: 14th Mar 2023 @ 5:20pm

In today's lesson we learnt how to follow instructions to achieve an outcome. We recapped on the features of instructions and how they need to be in the chronological order to make sense. We learnt the importance of checking our instructions and ensuring they have every step included. We then gave instructions to Miss Kay and Mrs Webster, to tell them how to make a disgusting sandwich. Again, we worked hard to give clear and precise instructions. We saw what happens when we weren’t clear and how the end goal wasn’t quite what we wanted! We then designed our own disgusting sandwich and created them, giving us an opportunity to talk through and order instructions before writing our own instructions over the next few days. As these were disgusting sandwiches - we didn't eat them!

Nursery - Developing our Mark Making Skills

Date: 9th Mar 2023 @ 9:09am

The children are working really hard developing their mark making skills. At this stage there are alot of skills for the children to develop. They have to develop their fine and gross motor skills so their muscles are strong enough to support their pencil grip, they have lots of opportunities to practise drawing lines and circles which goes on to support letter formation and once they have made marks on paper or begun to copy some letter shapes, the children give meaning to the marks they have made on the paper. This week we have been reading "Dear Zoo" and the children practsied their writing and mark making by writing labels for the zoo animal and writing to the zoo to tell them which pet they would like.

Today, alongside the whole School, Year Two have celebrated World Book Day. The children have all dressed up as characters from some of their favourite books and all looked incredible- thank you for all the effort you have gone to! To start the celebrations we took inspiration from Willy Wonka and created our own exciting new chocolate/sweet and used our knowledge of adjectives to describe it before we were treated to a visit by author Shane Hegarty who told us where he gets his inspiration from and got us thinking creatively too. We have enjoyed the day celebrated and shared some of the stories we love with each other.

Our first Reading into Writing journey this half term is instructions. We began this journey by reading the story 'The Disgusting Sandwich.' Today we practised following instructions to make paper plate fish and a friendship bracelet. We recapped on the features of instructions, before decoding and reading through each example and finding the features together. It was then our turn to follow the instructions to make our end product. Some of us found out what happened when we don’t read and follow instructions carefully!

Year 6 - All About Pride

Date: 20th Jan 2023 @ 10:13am

This week we have been learning about the prigins of 'Pride' month as part of our LGBTQ+ work. During 'No Pen Day', we had lots of discussions about what Pride month is and why it was first introduced. As part of Reading into Wriitng, we used what we have learned to write a non-chronological report. Here are our drafts - we are looking forward to completing our final piece of writing.

Year 5 - Informal Letters

Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 2:54pm

This week, year 5 pupils have drafted, edited and presented informal letters in the role of a character from a story. We discussed how the character of Sam, from 'My Brother is called Jessica' by John Boyle, would be feeling about the changes that are going on in his family, and how his behaviour would impact on his brother and his parents. Pupils were challenged to include all the features of a letter, whilst using a tone, grammar and sentence structure that suited a letter written to a close relative.

Year 3- No Pen Day!

Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 2:42pm

Year 3 enjoyed a No Pen Morning and used their Reading into Writing lessons to put down their pens and use their voices! In Reading into Writing, we focused on stereotypes (in theme with our playscripts) and we debated the issues that were put forward. This has helped us in creating conversations for our play scripts. We thought about how we can develop conversations but asking questions and developed our listenign skills.

In Maths, we worked in pairs to practically do flexible partitioning. We used our grouping skills to divide numbers. We had to discuss how we were solving the questons and worked on justifying our answers.

Year 2 No Pen Morning

Date: 17th Jan 2023 @ 4:59pm

Today, Year Two participated in the whole School's 'No Pen Morning' ensuring we focus on our language skills and complete tasks in a creative way. In Reading into Writing, we are in the process of planning our own animal adventure story based on the book 'And Tango makes three' so today, we explored different famous landmarks in New York which is where our story will be set. In Maths, we continued our money journey by comparing different amounts of money having to practice our coin counting skills as well as our knowledge of the comparisons symbols. The children loved completing tasks in a different way and loved that they didn't have to touch a pen all morning!

Year 6 - No Pen Morning

Date: 17th Jan 2023 @ 12:40pm

Year 6 have had a great morning - without pens or pencils! We took the opportunity to discuss, debate and challenge each other through a variety of activities. We started with some philosophy and considered a number of questions before feeding back our opinions to the rest of the class. In Reading into Writing, we learned about LGBTQ+ issues and the Pride movement before discussing discrimination and why being an ally is important. Finally, in our maths lesson we worked in groups to solve practical problems involving decimals.

'Both girls learn that all families are different'

We sequenced the key events from the story and worked on retelling the story with a partner.

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 12:14pm

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

In Year 1 we read the story 'The Jolly Christmas Postman.' We began by sequencing the key events, discussing the characters and the meaning of key words. We then moved onto reading letters from different characters, matching the correct letter to the correct address and piecing together a mixed up letter. On 1st December our class elves arrived and brought a letter with them for us to read, but some bits were missing! We then used what we had learnt about letters to fill in the missing features. We will be writing our own letters this week.

In Year 2, we are in the process of writing our own Christmas story inspired by the 2019 John Lewis advert featuring Edgar the dragon. Throughout the journey, we have read a range of Christmas stories and watched a selection of different Christmas adverts to explore how they tell a story through videos. We have now planned out our story and are looking forward to writing them up.

In Year Three we have been exploring shape poems surrounding the theme of Christmas. We have focused on using alliteration, similes and metaphors to create an imaginative description.

In Year 4, we have been working on our play script journey. To begin with, we read a variety of play scripts to identify their features. We then went on to do some drama and act out some of the scenes that we read. We are going to be basing our final pieces on the Boudicca Revolt which is what we learnt about last half term.

In Year 5 we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We read and analysed stories from the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and then created a list of features particular to that type of story. 'The Dreamtime' is the Aboriginal people's creation stories, they usually explain how the world came to be, and how animals were created. We planned, drafted and edited our own Dreamtime story, before publishing our final piece of writing. After writing our final version, we peer-assessed our texts by discussing what we had written with a partner.

In Year 6 we have spent time exploring, planning and writing crime stories. We looked at several full stories at the start of the journey and began pulling out features of crime stories. Then we worked together to generate as much vocabulary as possible relating to the genre so that we would have a bank of high quality words to choose from when we wrote our own stories. We had fun writing our stories and typing them up at the end as a finished piece.

Year 6 Poetry Workshop with Nathan Parker

Date: 6th Dec 2022 @ 4:56pm

Today Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from local author/poet - Nathan Parker. He spent the first part of the visit talking about his works and his inspirations for writing. The children then took part in several short activities that got them to think about emotions and rhyming words. By the end of the session, the children created a whole class poem around pets - we all had a great time with Nathan and we hope to work with him again.
