Year 1 Heritage Day

Date: 3rd Jul 2023 @ 6:10pm

Today we explored the key question, 'how has the Blackpool Tower Circus changed?' We began by learning about the circus in the past, the year it opened, what acts performed there and how it looked. We looked at both photo evidence and posters, discussing what clues we could see that gave us information about the past. We then learnt about how the circus has changed over time and created a timeline of the promotional posters used. Finally we created our own posters for the present circus! We are also all looking forward to our circus trip as part of our Heritage learning!

Year 4 - Heritage Day 2023

Date: 3rd Jul 2023 @ 3:07pm

For Boundary’s Heritage Day 2023 we learned all about Blackpool Football Club. We started the day by discussing what heritage means and what we have learned about on previous Heritage days. Then we plotted events from Blackpool FC’s history in chronological order on a timeline. Next, we went into the Dance Studio where we were able to look at lots of the Seasider’s memorabilia. To finish the morning, we researched more information about the club including: why they play in tangerine, a famous chant called ‘Allez, Allez, Allez’, who owns the club, promotions and trophies they have won (FA Cup in 1953, promotion to the Premier League in 2010), their home stadium Bloomfield Road and what the coat of arms on their badge represent.

Year 4 - World Music Day 2023!

Date: 21st Jun 2023 @ 11:47am

Today, we celebrated World Music Day. To start the day we had an assembly to look at the history of the day where Mrs Pope told us that World Music Day originated in France and is now celebrated in over 120 countries on this day every year. Then, we were told our theme. South American/ Latin American music! We studied South American in Geography recently, so we were excited about learning about their genres of music. We start the morning listening to different genres of Latin music such as Samba, Salsa and Rumba. Then we listened to music by Ricky Martin and Shakira. The children used their oracy skills and musical vocabulary to describe the music. We discovered that a lot of Latin music has a fast tempo (allegro), the lyrics are Spanish and the tonality of the music is major. To show everything we learned about Latin America we made collages!

Year 5 - Now Press Play: Pompeii

Date: 23rd May 2023 @ 4:23pm

To support the learning in our geography unit : Volcanoes and Earthquakes, the pupils in year 5 completed an immersive experience using the Now Press Play resource. The children were dropped into a story set in Roman times, where they witnessed the deverstating eruption of the volcano which burried the city of Pompeii in 79AD. This also linked to learning about the Roman Empire, which children completed in year 4.

Year 6 - Manchester Museum Visit

Evolution

Archaeology

The children had a wonderful time bringing their learning to life and being given the opportunity to observe artifacts from a range of periods of time.

Year 3 Stop Motion Animation

Date: 16th May 2023 @ 11:43am

In our topic of Stop Motion animation we created short films from still pictures. We used onion skinning techniques to know where our previous picture were so that our changes were small. We made sure not to include our own hair/fingers in the photos to ensure consistency in the finished clip. Some people even added sound (planes and trains) to our animations. We were inspired by our Science of Growth and the WW2 topic using steam trains and fighter planes to create our animations.

Year 3- Boundary's WW2 Museum!

Date: 11th May 2023 @ 2:47pm

Today we had our very own History Museum with artefacts from WW2. We explored these and read information to help us to answer our key question for the lesson 'How did Britain stand firm during WW2?' We found out that Britain were prapred with gas masks, evacuated children, rationed food, implemented the Home Guard, had bomb shelter and also put women to work in the factories.

Year 4 - A part of history

Date: 5th May 2023 @ 2:04pm

We are a part of history this weekend! Today we celebrated King Charles III's Coronation. We have learned about the history of coronations and what happens during the ceremonies, as well as singing the National Anthem and the Coronation Song. We played some 'Regal Games' including croquette, the king's four corners and the royla court tin can alley. We had a wonderful roya lunch together with sandwiches and cakes - and we wore our crowns which we made yesterday! Then we did some royal quizzes and made a collage of all things royal using King Charles III's silhouette.

Boundary Coronation Celebrations

Date: 5th May 2023 @ 12:34pm

Boundary Coronation Celebrations

Our day began with a whole school assembly looking at what happens during a Coronation and where it will take place. During the day, all children will take part in a variety of 'Royal Games' including 4 Kingly Corners, Tin Can Alley and Croquet! Lessons will have a distinctly royal theme! Each child will be making and decorating their own crown to wear to their 'Royal Banquet' where they will toast the King before tucking into a meal fit for a monarch!

Take a look at our blogs for more pictures and to see more of the learning that has been taking place this week!

Year 3- WW2 Day!

Date: 24th Apr 2023 @ 3:58pm

Today we were lucky enough to have a History visitor come to Year 3 and teach us all about World War 2. We learnt about the Blitz, evacuees, rationing and first aid. We also got to handle various artefacts.

Year 2 Now Press Play

Date: 3rd Apr 2023 @ 4:17pm

Today we used the Now Press Play equipment to put ourselves into Mary Seacole’s shoes and live key events of her life. We started out working in Jamaica with our mother to heal sick soldiers and help treat a soldier who has cholera. We then see Florence Nightingale is recruiting nurses for the Crimean war but we got told they don’t want us. We then decide to use our own money to travel to Crimea alone to help soldiers on the battlefield. Eventually, after returning from the war we are rewarded with a medal from Queen Victoria.

Year 4 - Church visit

Date: 30th Mar 2023 @ 2:40pm

Today we had a visit from Matthew and Matthew, who are both part of various churches in and around the area. We had some great conversations about temptation and sacrifice. Matthew told us about the old testament and stories of Hebrews wanting to follow God way back in Ancient Egyptian times and God's followers writing to one of the first churches in Romans times asking about living sacrifice. The children asked some brilliant questions and we had a great afternoon.

Whole School Art Day 2023

Date: 24th Mar 2023 @ 11:22am

On Thursday all the children fully embraced a whole school art day. From Nursery to Year 6 you could hear the sound of paper being ripped and cut as the children created collages of different things you can find in their home town of Blackpool. From transport in Year 3 to famous landmarks in Year 5, from trees and flowers in Year 1 to collaged signs in Year 6. The children have created some superb pieces of artwork and these are all going to be displayed together to create a whole school mural.

Year 4 - Tomb robbers

Date: 20th Mar 2023 @ 3:44pm

Today, we investigated a crime. We were told about some tomb robbers and after reading one of their confessions, we had to reunite the recovered stolen items to their tomb owner. We had to use clues from the recovered items to decide what type of person they would belong to and then we read about the tomb owners. Next, we used all the evidence to get the stolen items back to the correct tomb.

Year 1 Columbus

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 5:59pm

Today we learnt why Columbus risked his life to journey to an unknown land. We listened to suggestions from advisers and explored how some people advised him to go on his voyage to the Indies whilst others told him to stay. We discussed the arguments, what they meant and what people were trying to tell him to do. We recognised that things may have turned out differently for Columbus and that he didn’t know the outcome when he first set out on his voyage.

Year 4 - Discovering Tutankhamun's Tomb

Date: 14th Mar 2023 @ 7:04pm

Today, like Howard Carter in 1922, we entered King Tutankhamun’s tomb. What an experience searching around for clues about the young pharaoh. The tomb was extremely dark, so we used torches to make our way round. Once, we had made note of things we had found, we went back to class and started to discuss the sources of evidence that has survived thousands of years and how they were discovered. At first, we watched the opening scene of a film called Prince of Egypt. This showed that the pyramids were built by slaves. We then investigated evidence as to whether or not that is true. There were argument for and arguments against, however overall mainly agreed that that was not true.

Year 1 Neil Armstrong

Date: 10th Mar 2023 @ 6:24pm

Today, as part of Science day we learnt about a number of different astronauts including Neil Armstrong. We watched a video which explored Neil Armstrongs life and the key events that led up to what he is famous for! We learnt that Neil Armstrong was born in 1930 and his first time in a plane was when he was just 5 years old. We placed key events in his life onto a timeline, including 1969 when he became the first man to walk on the moon!

Year 4 - PE (Roman Dance)

Date: 9th Mar 2023 @ 2:55pm

This week, we continue practising and making up a Roman dance. We listened to a piece of Roman music first. We found the beat and decided the type of movements we needed to be making.

Year 4 - Finding the ancient tombs

Date: 7th Mar 2023 @ 6:55pm

This week in History we used our History, Geography and Oracy skills. We started by locating Egypt and England on a world map, then we zoomed in to Europe and North Africa so see how far away Egypt is. Next, we were given a map of just Egypt and in groups we had to discuss and decide where we think would have been best to built the Pharaoh tombs. We came up with some sentence starters to support each other in our discussions. We decided that nearest the River Nile was the best option because of the supply of water for not only building but living whilst building the tombs/pyramids. Many groups recognised mountainous areas on the map of Egypt and we discussed that this would be impractical for building. We then zoomed in on an area called Esna and Thebes - an area in The Valley of the Kings. This is where the tombs were built. To finish the lesson we did a zone of inference task with a drawing found in the richly decorated tomb of Nebamun - discovered in 1820.

Year 1 Christopher Columbus

Date: 25th Feb 2023 @ 8:43pm

Today we began our History journey by being ‘History Detectives!’ We were given 8 visual clues that revealed details and ideas as to why Columbus is famous, even though he died 500 years ago. We worked in groups to look at these historical sources, writing key words or phrases that came to mind around the outside of the photos. We then combined all our ideas on our class mind map.

Reception Past and Present Teddy Bears

Date: 22nd Feb 2023 @ 9:12pm

Today in Reception the children were invited to bring their favourite teddy bear to school.  The children enjoyed talking to their friends about their teddy and why it is special to them.  Mrs Clark then introduced her teddy which was given to her by her nana.  He was 72 years old.  In small groups we compared how the teddies had changed over time

"In the past there was only teddy bears" William

"The old teddy bears were made to look like real bears" Lana-Rose

"Newer teddies can be different characters like Minnie Mouse and Spider Man" Ishaanvir

The children then worked independently to sort the pictures of different teddies in to past and present.

Year 4 - The start of our Ancient Egyptian adventure

Date: 20th Feb 2023 @ 7:26pm

Today we started our Ancient Egyptians unit. First, we did our start of a new unit timeline flashback. We were given flashback cards for everything we have learned so far in History at Boundary and we had to put them in chronological order. We also went to look at where Ancient Egypt appears on the big timeline in the hall and we soon realised it is a HUGE period of time – around 2500 years. Next, we were given a placemat on our tables and together we noted down anything we already knew from the picture stimulus’. Then, we watched a video and did information runs in our table groups. These activities meant that we learned as many new things as we could about Ancient Egypt, spoke about them to peers on our desks and told the rest of the class. After that, we looked at an anachronism picture and we had to use the knowledge we had gained so far to spot the things wish were the odd ones out. Lastly, we went on an Ancient Egyptian Now, Press, Play adventure where we learned more about the afterlife and how pharaohs were preserved.

Year 6 - Now Press Play

Date: 20th Feb 2023 @ 6:55pm

In our last History session we took part in a Viking themed Now Press Play session. The children learned about:

  • Life in Viking Denmark: the Assembly, reasons for leaving Scandinavia, longships
  • Raids on monasteries and the invasion of England
  • Viking attacks on Wessex and resistance by Alfred the Great
  • Viking religion and gods (such as Thor), and writing in runes

Year 3- Stone Age to Iron Age Museum

Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 2:52pm

In History, we were posed with the question 'What can we learn about life in the Stone Age?'. We answered this question by firstly studying Skara Brae. We looked at what has been discovered and we infered what that could tell us about life all those years ago.

We then moved on into our very own 'Boundary Stone Age to Iron Age Museum' where we were able to explore a varety of artefacts from the Stone Age. Once again, we infered what this could tell us so that we could build up a picture of life in the Stone Age.

Year 6 - A living graph in history

Date: 16th Jan 2023 @ 3:54pm

In today's history lesson we considered the question: How did the Vikings try to take over the country and how close did they get? We looked at key points during the Viking period and created a living graph that showed when the Vikings were more or less threat to conquering England.
