Year 5: Blog items
Date: 11th Oct 2022 @ 8:21am
This morning children in Year 5 visited Aspire Academy to take part in a science lesson. As part of our learning journing with 'materials and their properties' we were challenged to separate a mixture of rock, salt and water. Our first task was to filter the solution using a funnel and filter paper, which removed the rock. This left a solution of salt water. By heating the solution with a bunsen-burner, we made the (liquid) water evapourate, leaving behind the (solid) salt.
Year 5 Roman Numerals Jigsaw challenge
Date: 7th Oct 2022 @ 11:41am
We have applied our knowledge of Roman Numerals to work out and create different jigsaws by matching the numbers with the Roman numerals. The challenge was tricky because some of the numbers didn't match because they formed the outside edge.
Date: 7th Oct 2022 @ 11:38am
During the start of our reading into writing journey for Non-Chronological reports we have been reading and finding the features of different good examples (WAGOLLS). We have also done a jigsaw task where we had to read each paragraph, work out which text it belonged to and organise the structure. We decided on the order and layout before gluing them down.
Date: 5th Oct 2022 @ 2:52pm
We began to create our maps. Based on of knowledge from the last few weeks of using typography, powerful images and ideas from great artists, we began to form our maps. Our success criteria was to have typography on the map and some element of 3D work. We discussed the features of a map that we could include, based on our class novel, Kensuke's Kingdom and the map included in that book.
Date: 29th Sep 2022 @ 3:02pm
This has been a great week for Democracy at Boundary! We have voted in the hall after reading out our Manifestos in class. Our new Student Councillors are Harris for Hawthorn and Jethro for Rowan.
Date: 29th Sep 2022 @ 2:58pm
This half-term, children in year 5 have been learning how to write a biography. We have read biographies of several famous people including, Roald Dahl, Stormzy and Wayne Rooney, and identified the language and structural features that make them different to other text types. Follwing the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, pupils carried out research, planned, drafted and edited a biography of her life, before presenting a final, polished piece of writing.
Year 5 Exploring mountains of the UK through Maps
Date: 27th Sep 2022 @ 7:29pm
We have been looking at the atlases to find the Mountain ranges of the UK and the highest peaks in the 4 countries. We practised a loop card game and continued to learn through the use of Kahoots quiz!
Date: 27th Sep 2022 @ 7:24pm
As we continue our unit Dancing Through the Ages, we have looked at some common dance moves from the HipHop genre and created our own motifs in time to the music. We tried to work at different levels, in unison and in canon so that we could add some interesting dynamics to the dance routine. We had to negotiate and work together as a team to create our motif and perform it to the rest of the class.
Date: 26th Sep 2022 @ 4:58pm
In this week's science lesson, pupils in Hawthorn and Rowan continue to learn about the properties of different materials. Pupils carried out an experiment using water as a solvent, to find out which materials were soluble and which were insoluble. We also noticed that the soluble substances were edible.
We also melted and solidfied white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate by heating and cooling it. We obseved that it it was still the same substance after these changes in state - they were reversible changes. The chocolate looked and tasted the same too!
YEAR 5 (A Very Wet) Forest Schools Session
Date: 26th Sep 2022 @ 12:34pm
On Thursday, pupils in Hawthorn and Rowan had to show resilience and toughness as our Forest School sessions were interrupted by heavy rain. Pupils built dens (which were tested by the weather), made tie-dyed strips of material, and had a snack of apple and soft cheese. We were proud that the children persevered in the challenging conditions and still had an enjoyable time.
Year 5 Exploring Strong sketches
Date: 21st Sep 2022 @ 8:54pm
We explored using heavier, darker pencils and charcoal to sketch onto recylced maps this week, to continue our journey. Our aim was to make our sketches stand out against the print of the maps. We sketched mountains and animals with focus and some people really used the features of the maps to enhance their sketches.
Date: 20th Sep 2022 @ 4:58pm
Today the pupils in Year 5 have been learning about acids and alkalis. First of all we used bicarbonate of soda to neutralise an acid (white vinegar). When this happened the liquid started fizzing and bubbles of carbon dioxide were created. This tells us that a chemical reaction took place. Pupils then conducted an experiement to test the pH level of several everyday items, such as cola, vinegar and lemon juice. The pH level tells you if the substance is an acid or an alkali.
Year 5 Safe Skills in Forest School
Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 4:04pm
Today was about gaining some skills in being safe around equipment, in particular, knives, axes and mallets. We cut some sticks down, used the knives and peelers to whittle them to a flat surface and decorated them as tree markers. We also made a small safe fire and cooked the harvest of pears, which were delicious. We also built dens, created our own games, found another frog and worked well as a team on our knots!
Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 3:46pm
Today we took part in a shared writing session. We had to work as a team to devise a paragraph that would work as part of a biography for Ellen White, who was one of the England Team for the Euro's in 2022. We needed to include the features we had been learning about, including third person and past tense. We managed to manipulate some of the sentences to include fronted adverbial phrase.
Date: 12th Sep 2022 @ 4:47pm
Our science topic this half-term is all about materials and their properties. In this lesson, pupils learned about the 'fire triangle', which explains that there must be fuel, oxygen and heat for combustion to take place. To help children to undertsnt this, we conducted two experiments which showed that oxygen is needed for a candle to burn and that as a candle burns it decreases in mass. The children carried out these experiments using equipment safely, measuring time and mass, and recording results.
Year 5 Art begins with Typography
Date: 8th Sep 2022 @ 12:36pm
We have started our learning in Art by creating our own different styles of Typography. We learnt that typography is any form of print style designed to create an idea or emotion. We learned about Louise Fili who is a famous graphic designer who created posters for the New York Subway using different type fonts. By cutting up paper and sketching, we started to create our own letters.
Year 5 A Fresh look at Forest School
Date: 8th Sep 2022 @ 12:31pm
What a great time of Year to be outdoors! We managed to avoid the showers and had a lovely morning exploring the Forest School environment. We went on a mini beast hunt with the magnifying glasses and observed the habitats. We found lots of insects, arachnids and bugs lurking under the rocks and logs. A Frog leapt in! We all looked at it's camoflage, while learning the differences between frogs and toads. There was lots of seasonal fruit including mini apples, pears and plums, but they weren't yet ripe enough to pick. We also explored and enjoyed spending time with our friends outdoors and catching up casually after the holidays.
Karson planted some trees using the fallen fruit's seed.
Harley enjoyed working with his team to build dens and shelters.
Molliemae worked with her friends to make a chill out zone in their den, with books and colouring.
Darin made a cake masterpiece recipe including flowers, mud and fruits. He used his imagination to create a bakery business too!
Year 5 Dancing through the Ages
Date: 6th Sep 2022 @ 7:27pm
Our first Topic in PE is Dance and in our preassessment, we discussed what we already knew about Dance styles through the ages! We weren't too sure about the history of dance, so we have started today with the Charleston from 1920's. We made a class motif using the counts of the music in the style of the Charleston including kicks and flicks! It was energetic and fun.
Year 5 Mountains around the world
Date: 6th Sep 2022 @ 7:18pm
We have started off our learning in Geography this term by using the atlases to find the Seven Summits around the world. We used the maps to record the names of the 7 highest peaks on each continent. It was great to get back to learning!
Year 5 - A smashing History lesson
Date: 14th Jul 2022 @ 4:32pm
As part of our journey to Ancient Greece, we have been learning about the system of democratic government in Athens. Each year, the citizens could vote to remove a public servant if they felt they were becoming too powerful or if they were not doing a good job. A meeting was held in the agora (market), and people voted by scratching a name into a shard of broken pottery. If enough votes were cast, that individual was thrown out of Athens, or 'ostracised' for 10 years. The word 'ostracised' literally means 'judgement by shards'. We had a go at writing our own name into a shard of pottery using the Greek alphabet.
Date: 6th Jul 2022 @ 3:47pm
We have been learning different yoga poses in our PE lessons this half term. We have been listening to calming music and learning how to control our breathing in order to get the best out of the different breathing exercises. Yoga is beneficial for our bodies but also our minds, it helps us to find a place of calm, grounds us and helps us to maintain a good mental health. We sequenced some of our different poses in order to creat our own mini meditations.
Date: 4th Jul 2022 @ 12:51pm
As part of our school-wide Heritage Day, pupils in year 5 visited Bloomfield Road Stadium (home of Blackpool FC). We were given a tour of the ground, got to sit in the home and away changing rooms, enjoy the view from the Directors Box, and stood pitchside next to the hallowed turf. Staff from the Blackpool FC Community Trust explained about how the success of the team can impact the town, and the many different ways that the club supports the community and people of Blackpool.
Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 5:29pm
This week we were visited by the school nurse, who conducted lessons for the boys and girls about puberty. The sessions focussed on the changes that occur in both male and female bodies as we grow up, and the importance of looking after ourselves in relation to good hygiene. All of the pupils were very mature and sensible, discussing a sensitive and potentially embarrassing subject.
Date: 20th Jun 2022 @ 7:43am
In this unit, we ask ‘How Does Music Connect Us with the Environment?’ as an entry point for the broad Social Theme of ‘Music Is a Nature Lover and Guardian of the Earth’. We will look at how this links to other subjects and learning in school such as nature, environment, animals, Geography, Science, Art, Forest School, climate change etc. We began our first lesson by listening to the song ‘You and Me’ and decided that this was Pop music. We discussed similar songs and artists from this genre and why we like or disliked this piece. We then began looking at the structure of the song ‘You and Me’ and began learning the chorus – we know this to be the ‘catchy’ part or the hook and we started to practice the first verse and chorus.
We can't wait to use the Recorders in the next few weeks and create our own piece of music!
Date: 17th Jun 2022 @ 4:39pm
This week, we have started to investigate the famous poem by Alfred Noyes, 'The Highwayman'.
We have looked at the structure, vocabulary and GPS features, including the rhyme structure and figurative language.
To help our pupils immerse themself into the poem and visualise it, we spent a lesson yesterday drawing famous scenes/phrases from the poem.
Take a look at our creations!
