Year 5: Blog items
Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 2:54pm
This week, year 5 pupils have drafted, edited and presented informal letters in the role of a character from a story. We discussed how the character of Sam, from 'My Brother is called Jessica' by John Boyle, would be feeling about the changes that are going on in his family, and how his behaviour would impact on his brother and his parents. Pupils were challenged to include all the features of a letter, whilst using a tone, grammar and sentence structure that suited a letter written to a close relative.

We had a great morning learning without pens or writing! We talked about how the music made us feel for the song 'Freedom is Coming', using the vocabulary for the listening mats. We played the glockenspiels and percussion instruments, and performed the accompaniment to the song.
In French we sang and recapped the months of the Year. We cut/stuck the months of the year in order. We spoke in french and started to put together the phrase, 'Mon Anniversaire est...' using the days and months.

This week has been Road Safety Week in school. After a whole school assembly on Monday, we have spent time in class discussing how we can stay safe as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers in cars. We looked at a range of real-life senarios and discussed the dangers that we could see. The biggest take-away from this week has been to think about the clothes we are wearing, particularly when it is dark, so that we can be seen by drivers.

In PE this week pupils in year 5 were asked to create balances. Working in pairs, pupils created a simple routine of rolls and balances, which could be high or low, broad or narrow. Each performance was viewed and then children tried to improve their performances.

This term Year 5 are asking the question: What do Hindus learn from stories about Krishna? In this lesson, pupils reflected on previous learning about Hinduism and recalled things that they know about this popular religion. In groups, pupils had to retell the story of Rama and Sita and discuss what they knew about Ramadan - The Festival of Lights.
KS2 - Blackpool Schools Football Tournament
Date: 9th Jan 2023 @ 2:08pm
This morning our KS2 boys football team took part in the Blackpool Schools Football Tournament, which they qualified for before Christmas. The rescheduled event saw all schools from Blackpool take part in a couple of fixtures to determine who would go on to represent Blackpool at the finals on Friday.
As always, our Boundary boys put on a great show of character, determination and although they didn't qualify for the final, they came away smiling after a spirited performance.
Well done to all KS2 boys involved in today's event, you've done your school proud!

Today in French we developed our dictionary skills by looking up the items of clothing that Father Christmas wears. We worked in pairs to find the vocabulary and labelled Pere Noel!
Year 5 French learning As tu un animal?
Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 1:16pm
This half term we have been learning in French how to talk about animals. We have improved our pronunciation of the animals, asked questions, introduced the characters and said if our animals have a name. We have also learned the negative 'Je ne pas' and started to use the connective but 'mais' to explain different examples. We did some excellent listening tasks too!
Reading into Writing so far this half-term...
Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 12:14pm
Date: 6th Dec 2022 @ 12:34pm
As the final part of our 'Reading into Writing' journey, we have peer assessed our writing. We have been learning about stories from other cultures and this week pupils wrote their own Aborigional Dreamtime story. Today, pupils worked together to assess whether they had been successful in including all of the features from this text type.
Year 5 - Aspirational Scientists
Date: 5th Dec 2022 @ 4:21pm
As part of our learning journey in science, we have learned about Sally Ride, who became the first American woman in Space when she was part of the Challenger Shuttle crew in 1983. Pupils found out about her life, before using their literacy skills to write a biography about this amazing person. As a child, Sally Ride was a star pupil and outstanding tennis player. She has degrees in physics and English, and helped design the Challenger Shuttle's 'arm' which was used in space. After working for NASA, Sally was a professor at the University of California, wrote children's books about science, and started a school program to encourage children, especially girls, to become scientists. After her death in 2012, Sally's sister revelled that she had been in a same-sex relationship with a fellow scientist, and had sadly felt that she needed to keep it a secret for 27 years to protect her career.
Date: 2nd Dec 2022 @ 1:33pm
During Music in Year 5 we have been learning lots about the musical vocabulary and how to use it to describe the pieces of music we listen to. We have been composing on Charanga as well as on the musical score using crotchets, minims and quavers. We did a Menti quiz to see what we had learned and began to practise playing Deck the Halls for Christmas on the Glockenspiels.
Date: 1st Dec 2022 @ 3:01pm
We worked in small groups to create a ‘living graph’ relating to the fighting between Anglo-Saxon kings and the invading Vikings. We placed events on the graph in chronological order, and then, in discussion with our group, moved them up or down on the Y-axis based on the level of threat to the Anglo-Saxons. We then used this to draw the shape of the graph on our own axis and picked 3 key events during the period.

On Monday morning we travelled to Blackpool Sports Centre to take part in this year's Sportshall Athletics competition. The competition saw students compete in various field and track events, such as Standing Long Jump and the 4x1 Relay.
Unfortunately we fell short of qualifying for the North schools section but, as always, our pupils represented the school with great pride and attitude, with the team scoring highly in plenty of their events.
Date: 24th Nov 2022 @ 8:24pm
In our computing lessons this term, we are learning how to code a quiz game. We have found out how to use the 'selection' coding block to select a 'condition' and choose 'outcomes' that occur if the condition is true or if it is false. Pupils have experimented with different outcomes, and will now begin to plan and code their own quiz.
Date: 21st Nov 2022 @ 3:39pm
This morning our KS2 boys football team travelled to Stanley Park to take part in the Utilita Cup, organised by Blackpool FC Community Trust. The tournament saw our boys placed into a group facing various schools from across the Fylde Coast.
The team battled well, representing Boundary well and putting their all into their performances. Falling short in the group stages meant we missed out on the semi-finals but the boys showed real determination, some fantastic skills and positive play against tough opponents.

As our journey into Anglo-Saxon Britain continued, we found out how the Anglo-Saxon kings were converted to Christianity by St. Augustine, who was sent to England by Pope Gregory I in 596AD. After learning the facts, pupils were challenged to use their history skills to uncover sources of evidence and decide 'how we know' what we know about the Anglo-Saxons.

Today we watched a video from Primary Futures, about gender stereotypes. The video began by explaining that we were going to be introduced to 4 people whose jobs were:
- Tree surgeon
- Engineer
- Forest school leader
- Nurse
Before we actually saw the people, we had a good discussion as a class about what gender we thought the person who did each job would be. We realised that some of us went straight to a specific gender due to our preconceptions about the roles of men and women in society. We then agreed that we can't make assumptions on people based solely on their gender.

In our science lesson this week, created a scale replica of our solar system. We found the distances of the planets from the sun in Astronomical unit (AU), and converted this to meters. 1 AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun, so on our model Earth was 1 meter from the Sun. As you can see the rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are relatively close together, whereas the gas giants are further apart.
Year 5 - Finding factors and making multiples
Date: 9th Nov 2022 @ 8:19pm
In maths we have been using our knowledge of multiplication facts to find multiples and factors of numbers. In this lesson, we played a 2-player game, where pupils took turns choosing numbers that must be either a multiple of, or factor of the previous number. The player who is unable to find a correct number loses! This helped the children to understand what multiples and factors are, as well as show their knowledge and develop tactics to win.
Date: 9th Nov 2022 @ 8:12pm
As part of our PE curriculum we have begun a spiritual journey in Yoga. Pupils are learning some of the most common yoga poses and movements, as well as developing the ability to control their bodies, breathing and thoughts. Yoga involves balancing and stretching all parts of the body, moving in a controlled way and being peaceful and mindful.

Today, girls from Year 5 and 6 participated in their first ever football match. They did so well and kept going - they never gave up and showed so much determination and resilience. We're looking forward to more matches over the coming months and watching the girls become more confident. Go team Boundary!!
Date: 3rd Nov 2022 @ 2:03pm
Today we have listened again to the Ghost Parade track and kept time to the beat by moving our bodies. We then used the percussion and xylophones to play a short melody before we began improvising our own patterns using CGE. We also began to learn some of the vocabulary for musical transcription, including sharpes, flats, stave, treble clef and time signature. Next week we will continue to develop our compositions!
Year 5 Royal Shakespeare Drama Workshop
Date: 19th Oct 2022 @ 12:32pm
As an introduction to William Shakespeare and The Tempest, Year 5 had a drama workshop with Hal from the Royal Shakespeare Company. We did some warm ups for our brain, body and voice before moving onto making 3 freeze frames representing the sailors arriving in Blackpool. We all had lots of fun and created some interesting stories for our characters.
