Year 5: Blog items

Year 5 - Seperating Solids and Liquids

Date: 19th Nov 2024 @ 2:13pm

In this lesson we used our knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating. We conducted an experiment to investigate whether the mass of sand was affected when filtered. We had to analyse a solution and decide how best to separate the component parts. From the results of this lesson we were able to explain how a solution is formed.

Year 5 – Amazing Acids

Date: 19th Nov 2024 @ 2:07pm

In this lesson, pupils used universal indicator paper to find out if different substances were acid, alkali or neutral. Pupils also found out what happened when you mix an acid (vinegar) with an alkali (bicarbonate of soda). We obseverved that a gas is produced which makes it fizz. Pupils identified that this gas was carbon dioxide.

Year 5 - French

Date: 14th Nov 2024 @ 8:09am

This half term we have been learning in French how to talk about animals. We have improved our pronunciation of the animals, asked questions, introduced the characters and said if our animals have a name. We have also learned the negative 'Je ne pas' and started to use the connective but 'mais' to explain different examples. We did some excellent listening tasks too!

Year 5 - Soluble Science

Date: 12th Nov 2024 @ 1:34pm

This week in Science we took part in an investigation to find out which materials are soluble.

We first ensured that we all knew what the terms around solubilty were so we could talk scientifically during our experiment.

We then took turns to gather a material and stir it into water and watch what happened. We used sand, sugar, salt and soil. As you can tell from the photographs, our children in Year 5 learnt so much about the materials and their solubility. Once we had finished our experiment, we spent time to write our results down and compare them with what different groups found.

Year 5 - We Will Remember

Date: 12th Nov 2024 @ 1:32pm

As part of our Remembrance service, Year 5 made and planted poppies in our remembrance garden. Each of the children wrote names of soldiers and we thought about their sacrifice when we planted them. The children also took part in our whole school act of remembrance.

Anti-bullying Week

Date: 5th Nov 2024 @ 9:37pm

This week across school we have been celebrating Anti-Bullying week. We started the week off with the a whole school assembly based around this year's theme ‘Choose Respect’. Throughout the week the children have been learning about being respectful and why this is such an important skill for life. Alongside this they have also been exploring the theme of bullying including what it means, different types of bullying, what to do if you are being bullied, the difference of a bystander and upstander, how to solve conflicts and what discrimination means. We finished of the week by inviting everyone to wear odd socks to celebrate everyone’s differences and promote kindness. What a fantastic week we have had!

Year 5 - Skills for Life: Managing Distractions

Date: 5th Nov 2024 @ 2:20pm

In this PSHE lesson we looked at distractions and how to manage them. It turned out that we were really good at giving examples of distractions, mainly because we come across them all of the time! We started by defining the word ‘distraction’ and then we looked at categorising them into ‘internal’ and ‘external’ distractions.  Finally, some of us put together an action plan of how we could manage distractions both at home and at school.

Year 5 - Poppy Art

Date: 5th Nov 2024 @ 2:16pm

This week we have introduced Remembrance Day to our class, focusing on why we have a Remembrance Day and why poppies are used to symbolise this important day.

Children in Year 5 produced a range of beautiful poppy art to decorate a fallen soldier. We had to use special techniques to create the different drawing and sketching techniques.

This is the start of a two-week period we have in school to remember and honour members of the armed forces.

Year 5 - Crazy Combustion

Date: 29th Oct 2024 @ 8:08pm

This week the children in year 5 have begun their learning journey into the states of matter. In this lesson, pupils conducted an experiment to prove that combustion requires oxygen, and that more oxygen allows fires to burn longer. We also measured the mass of a candle as it was burning, which showed that the wax was the fuel, and was being used to create the flame.

Year 5 - African Drumming 2024

Date: 29th Oct 2024 @ 4:16pm

Today, all of the children in Year 5 were given an amazing opportunity to take part in an African drumming workshop. Pupils learned about the different percussion instruments from west Africa and had a go at playing a djembe - an African drum. We learned different dances and rhythms and performed what we had learned in an assembly at the end of the day to parents and carers. It was an amazing experience!

Year 5 - R.E this half-term

Date: 17th Oct 2024 @ 8:22am

In RE this half term, we have asked ourselves ‘Why is it sometimes difficult to do the right thing?’ and considered this question through the teachings of Christianity. We have thought about the meaning of temptation, sin and forgiveness. To aid our understanding, we listened to the parables, The Fall and The Lost Son from the Bible and challenged ourselves to compare how forgiveness was shown in both stories. In class, pupils role –played the parts of Adam and Eve and were subjected to questioning by their peers about their actions. We also thought about the metaphorical and literal meanings of the story of The Fall and the children gave some very thoughtful answers. To try to answer our question, we discussed the temptations in the modern day world and how this may lead Christians to commit a sin. We looked at how Christians seek forgiveness through various practices in the Protestant and Catholic churches and compared these. Finally, we thought about what right and wrong looks like for us as individuals and created a moral compass poster to demonstrate our beliefs.

Year 5 - Active Listening - PSHE

Date: 16th Oct 2024 @ 1:54pm

This week's Skills for Life and PSHE focus was Active Listening. In Year 5, we looked the importance of active listening linked to the British Values of respect and tolerance and to friendship here at school and at home. We talked about the importance of active listening not just when adults are speaking but when our friends and adults at home are too! Finally, we put our skills to the test. In pairs, one person had 2 minutes to tell their partner facts about themselves or about their day so far; while this was happening the listener had to show their active listening skills (and ask any clarifying or probing questions). At the end of the 2 minutes, the speaker had to ask the listener 3 questions to test their skills - we decided that Year 5 are very good at Active Listening!

Year 5 - Reading into Writing - Oracy

Date: 16th Oct 2024 @ 1:43pm

A new Reading into Writing journey has begun and we are looking at Non-Chronological reports; specifically linking to our learning in Geography: Mountains! As always, our first lesson was an Oracy lesson. We looked at Physical Oracy and how facial expression and eye contact can impact how we speak and how (and if!) we are listened too. In the second part of the lesson, we looked more closely at our writing focus of mountains and, using key vocabulary (such as foot, summit and valley) we climbed our very own mountains in class - looking at our actions, thoughts, internal dialogues and the five senses...some of us were very cold and some of us had to overcome our fear of heights!

Year 5 - Blue Peter badge winner!

Date: 16th Oct 2024 @ 11:50am

Albie was very proud to share the news that he has recently recieved a Blue Peter badge for his passion for reading. He had to get in touch with the Blue Peter team and share a list of his favourite authors and books and then write about his passions and opinions when it comes to childrens books. The team were so impressed by his penmanship and passion that they awarded him a very special Blue Peter badge made from recycled yoghurt pots!

Well Done Albie, we are so proud of you!

Year 5 Musical Performance

Date: 8th Oct 2024 @ 7:38pm

This week in Music, Year 5 performed the song 'Words Can Hurt'. We have been analysing the lyrics, looking at the structure of the composition and then practising hwo to perform as a group.

The song has meant a lot to us as it has lead to some excellent discussions about how words can hurt our Mental Health just as much as physical pain. Some of us even performed some role plays about how to act kindly and with respect - following the Boundary Always Promises.

Year 5 Spelling Stars

Date: 8th Oct 2024 @ 7:33pm

The over all winners were Bathurst, who managed to spell 14/15 spellings across all 5 years groups.

Year 5 - Place Value Perfection

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 9:38am

We have been investigating Place Value and how the placement of digits can impact how we use them, how we say them and the words we use when we say them out loud. Some of us used Base 10 to investigating the concept of exchanging. We looked closely how the physical exchange of 10 ones becomes 10 and 10 tens becomes 100.

Year 5 - Maps and Typography

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 9:36am

In this art lesson, pupils began to design and create their 3D map. The children used the island map from Kensuke's Kingdom as a starting point and added their own features and used pencil lines to create textures. Next lesson, the pupils will add 3D elements to make their map come to life.

Year 5 - Shared Writing

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 9:32am

As part of our Reading into Writing journey, we have worked collboratively to write a paragraph for a biography about Billie Eilish. Our paragraphs had to include a fronted adverbial and a range of pronouns and possessive pronouns.

Year 5 - Competent Composers

Date: 1st Oct 2024 @ 11:48am

Today we were improvising and composing!

We started by using the glockenspiels and to improvise using a these note options:

C, D, E

C, D, E, F, G

We improvised using these 5 notes by making up a pattern of rhythm and melody of our choice – after some experimental time.

We then wrote down our preferred ostinato accurately on stave paper using the notes above, crotchets, minims, quavers. Finally we practiced playing this section for ourselves, then those who choose to, performed their improvised piece for the class.

Year 5 Exercising their Democratic Rights

In PSHE, children then ahd the opportunity to look more closely at the word Democracy and what this means for adults and then for themselves in school. Finally, those children who wanted to put their name forward for nomination, wrote their manifestos and read them out in front of the class. The results of the election will be announced soon. Well done and Good Luck to all those who took part!

Year 5 - Wellbeing and Mental Health

Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 10:19am

In this lesson we looked at the words Mental Health and Wellbeing and we defined them in our own words.

In small groups we discussed and recorded what these words mean to us; we took part in a quiz to help us understand that our emotions, thoughts and feelings (and the choices we make) can affect our Mental Health and Wellbeing.

We watched a video that suggested some great ideas about the type of things we can do to improve our own Mental Health and Wellbeing and finally, we came up with our own top tips for ourselves and others!
