Maths: Blog items
Date: 15th Apr 2024 @ 10:57am
Acorns have had a great week exploring space and shape. Our story of the week, Whatever Next, saw us travelling into space. We enjoyed the sensory experience of boxes as a rocket and a collander for a helmet. For maths, we explored shapes and made colourful rockets using lots of different shapes. We used a space theme to support our writing and mark making skills. What a busy week.

After spending time exploring a variety of existing shell structures, looked at creating nets and CAD, it was finally time to make our final products. We made our very own Easter themes boxes to hold a chocolate surprise. We had to carefully use a hot glue gun and measure accurately to ensure that they folded together correctly. We also used moulds to create different chocolate shapes to go inside, proving our designs were fit for purpose!

Today, we began to explore what capacity meant and after predicting what we thought might be the capacity of different containers we measured it out using cups. We had to be careful we were filling the cup the same amount each time and carefully counted how many cups filled each container to its capacity.

As part of our Science learning, we conducted an experiment to find out how far germs spread when we sneeze. We also wanted to know if a tissue would stop the spread of sneezes and coughs. In small groups, we planned what we would do and how to keep the test fair. We thought about what we would change and what we would measure to help us answer the question.
We then applied our maths measures knowldge to mark out different distances, before conducting our experiment to see how far germs can travel.
Our shared conclusion was:
Using a tissue does not stop all of the germs spreading when you sneeze but it does reduce the amount of germs that spread because they are caught in the tissue.
We also found out that the closer you are to someone when they sneeze, the more the germs spread. There was much more spray (germs) at 25cm and 50 cm that reached the paper than at 150cm.
Acorns - The day the dinosaurs came
Date: 21st Mar 2024 @ 4:41pm
Acorns have had a fun-filled dinosaur themed day today. We have enjoyed exploring dinosaurs in our tuff tray, listening to our sensory story, 10 little dinosaurs and incorporating dinosaurs into our number and literacy learning. Our favourite part was meeting the baby dinosaur Sky. She let us touch her and feel her skin and then we had fun feeding her balls so she could throw them for us to catch. What a great day!
Date: 21st Mar 2024 @ 4:05pm
Today, dinosaurs arrived at Boundary! We begun the day with an assembly where we met Jam the T-Rex and learnt about his diet and discussed some of his features. In class we created our own top trumps cards of different dinosaurs and completed a range of different activities throughout the day. In the afternoon, we were treated to meeting 3 different baby dinosaurs and some of us even got to interact with them. We also completed an investigation 'How do dinosaurs teeth affect their diet?' We ground leaves and cotton wool down using rocks and a staple remover to find how different dinosaurs have different teeth for their diet. Finally, we went outside and put our measuring skills to the test measuring the lengths of 3 different dinosaurs on the playground and ordering them shortest to longest. We have had an exciting and incredible day and hope the dinosaurs may one day come back to visit us!
Year 4 - When dinosaurs arrived at Boundary
Date: 21st Mar 2024 @ 2:40pm
Wow! What an amazing day for Science day today. We started the day with a wordsearch of lots of tricky dinosaur names. Then together in groups we wrote down lots of adjectives to describe dinosaurs. All of the words we used described dinosaurs as being extremely big. So our teachers showed us a variety of dinosaurs and we were surprised at how small some were - some as small as chickens! After a discussion about it, we then thought of more words to describe the variety of dinosaurs we had just looked at. After break, we went into a KS2 assembly where we met Jam. We learned about how Jam hunts for food. We found out that he had a great sense of smells and good eyesight. Next, we used our Maths and teamwork skills to do a scale jigsaw of a Tyrannosaurus Rex's head and a Sinornithosaurus. The children worked brilliantly together and we couldn't believe how big a T-Rex's head was in comparison to Year 4 children! After lunch, we went to the green screen workshop with the Teach Rex team and learned how to edit videos. Lastly, we used all our learning from the day to write fact files about a dinosaur of our choice. What a great day!

In today’s lesson we began to measure the lengths and heights of objects, using non-standard units of measure, e.g. cubes and paper clips. We learnt that to measure something we needed to use a consistent of measure and not a range of objects. We also learnt that the unit of measure needs to be equal in size. We consolidated our learning from the previous lesion by comparing the lengths and heights of objects we measured, learning that for accurate comparisons we needed to use a consistent unit of measure.
Reception Number bonds to 5 and 10
Date: 18th Mar 2024 @ 4:41pm
The children in Reception have been very busy of the last few weeks loearning thei number bonds to 5 and ten. They have used the tensframe and cubes to help them work out all the different ways of making ten and used their fingers tp represent this. They have also used the part, part whole model to find all the different possibilies. Some children have even been learning how to record their work as a calculation.
Date: 14th Mar 2024 @ 8:31pm
This week nursery have been exploring shape. We have learnt the names of simple 2D shapes and are beginning to describe their properties. The children have also used shapes to make pictures.
Date: 14th Mar 2024 @ 2:48pm
This week we started our statistics unit. After a recap on all statistics covered in Years 3 - 5, we moved on to look at solving problems using line graphs. Today we have been looking at infiormation displayed on dual bar charts.
Acorns - Walking Through the Jungle
Date: 4th Mar 2024 @ 4:21pm
This week Acorns have had lots of fun exploring and learning about the jungle and wild animals. Our sensory story is Walking through the Jungle, and we have enjoyed listening to the animal noises, using animal puppets and playing with the different animals in out jungle themed tuff tray. We have also incorporated the jungle into our maths and art sessions. We really enjoyed animal printing with sponges and paints and creating our very own lions and snakes.
Date: 28th Feb 2024 @ 8:46pm
Today in Design and Technology we practised the skill of accurately drawing out shapes. We carefully used a ruler to measure out different shapes in centimetres and we then carefully cut them out. We will apply this skill to mark out different parts of our moving vehicles, such as doors and windows.
Date: 26th Feb 2024 @ 5:29pm
Today we learnt about finding the difference and exploring this as a form of subtraction. We worked to make comparisons between two amounts, asking questions such as who has more? How do you know? How many more does _ have? We used our skills of counting back and counting on to help us to find the difference. Some of us made both amounts to visually see how many more or less a number is.
Acorns - Goldilocks and number fun
Date: 23rd Feb 2024 @ 4:18pm
Acorns have had lots of fun this week learning about the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. We have immersed ourselves in sensory stories, oaty tuff trays, puppets and even Goldilocks yoga. Alongside this, we have been exploring fun number and maths activities as our school celebrates its 100th day of school. We have been busy developing our focus and concentration skills while taking part in adult led activities. We worked very hard and had lots of fun.

What a great day we had in Year 6 today! Over the last couple of days we have been researching pizzas and looking at recipes in order to design our own pizza. Today we worked in groups and pairs to make from scratch the pizza dough and the sauce. We then split the dough into equal parts and rolled/stretched it out to create a thin base. Once this was done, we added the sauce and then picked a range of different toppings to add. We were very impressed with the results and they tasted amazing!! We are going to evaluate our pizzas tomorrow and say what we liked about our prodct and what we would add/change.
Year 4- Our 100th Day in School!
Date: 20th Feb 2024 @ 7:09am
Today, Yera 4 have been celebrating our 100th day in school by completing problem solving activities based on the book 'One is a snail, ten is a crab.' We were given a number and we had to work systematically to find all the possibliites of making that number. We found that starting with the larger number and making small changes each time was the most efficient method to find all possiblities.
Year 1 Our 100th Day in School!
Date: 19th Feb 2024 @ 6:19pm
Today we celebrated our 100th day in Year 1! We began the day with a special assembly with Miss Hooson, who introduced us to a very interesting Maths story! We enjoyed reading the story ‘One is a snail, ten is a crab’ and tried our very best to work out some of the questions in the story! When we went back to class we read and discussed the story again, to deepen our understanding of some of the calculations used in the text. We then used the animals in the story to find ways of making 10 or 20. Some of us began to think about working systematically to find all the possible options. We then chose a number between 2 and 20 and found how many legs could add together to make this number.
Date: 19th Feb 2024 @ 4:50pm
As part of our ‘100th day at School’ celebrations, we completed a problem solving activity based on the book ‘One is a snail, ten is a crab.’ We were given a number and had to find all the different possibilities of making the number. We tried to work systematically starting with the biggest number and changing one part of the calculation each time.
Date: 7th Feb 2024 @ 12:08pm
Today we started to look at arrays and how they can be used to represent multiplication. We used counters to make arrays by putting them into equal rows and columns.
We then wrote multiplication expressions to describe our arrays. We found that one array can be described in two different ways. For example, 3 x 5 and 5 x 3. This is because, like addition, multiplication is commutative. Which means it can be done in any order and you will reach the same total.
School Council- Fundraising and reading book ideas.
Date: 5th Feb 2024 @ 7:43pm
At our latest meeting, the School Council were joined by Miss Moyes, Miss Jones- Boast and Debbie our Cook.
We met to discuss how to calculate the cost and possible profit that could be made when we sell Elmer themed cup cakes to raise money for Brian House.
The cupcakes will be all different bright colours, just like Elmer. They will be sold at hometime on the school gates and also during the day for staff to purchase too.
Miss Moyes also needed to know what type of school reading books the children would enjoy, as she was going to be ordering some more. The school council then went back to their classes to find out.
Another meeting will be held in the last week of this half term to discuss the results.
Nursery Meet Alan and his Big Scary Teeth
Date: 31st Jan 2024 @ 1:01pm
Nursery read a brilliant story called "Alan's Big Scary Teeth" about an Alligator who scares all the jungle animals with his very large teeth! Alan takes really good care of his teeth, so we have been learning about how to take care of our own teeth and have practised brushing some giant teeth! We have also talked about "A" for alligator and thought of other items that begin with "A". To practise out counting, we have have been giving Alan the right number of teeth. To support the children with their social interactions, we played the Crocodile Tooth game. The children had to take it in turns to press down a tooth and hope that they don't get bitten by the crocodile!
Nursery Try to Catch The Gingerbread Man!
Date: 31st Jan 2024 @ 11:21am
Nursery had their work cut out when they read the story "The Gingerbread Man". We ran as fast as we could but we just couldn't catch him! So, instead we explored the ingredients we needed to make gingerbread and then made our own Gingerbread Men. We practised ordering numbers 1 - 5, followed instructions to draw a gingerbread man and used tweezers to add buttons on gingerbread men. We never did catch the Gingerbread man!
Date: 24th Jan 2024 @ 6:56pm
Today we began our DT journey and learnt about different mechanisms.
The first mechanism we created was a slider. We created a slider based around a scene from ‘The Gingerbread Man’, which enabled a character to move forwards and backwards to chase the main character. We learnt how we were going to make the mechanism safely, read through the instructions and took great care to carry out each step.
The next mechanism to master was a lever. For this mechanism we linked our learning to the story Jack and the Beanstalk. Again, we talked through the instructions as a class, following the prototype Miss Kay made and spotting her mistakes! We then had a turn at making the lever mechanism ourselves. We followed each instruction carefully and all successfully made a lever to show Jack and his beanstalk! We accurately measured specific lengths and cut all the parts correctly. We recapped on the importance of safety whilst using scissors and putting split pins through pieces of paper and card. We then discussed the key parts of the mechanism such as the arm and pivot.
