Maths: Blog items
Date: 2nd Feb 2020 @ 1:02pm
In Maths this week we have been learning all about different charts, tables and graphs. On Friday, we learnt about Carroll Diagrams.
We have to use our social skills and team work to sort the objects into the Carroll Diagrams, first by 2 criteria (transport or animal), then by 4 (transport or animals and yellow or blue). It was tricky but we worked well together!

Year 2 enjoyed lots of fun activities on no pen day. We had lots of help on hand as well with many parents coming to have a look at what we've been learning. Firstly we looked at a range of different synonyms for a range of adjectives, this will help us when we come to write our setting description later this week. Later on during maths we looked at dividing numbers equally and we learnt how some numbers we can shared in different ways.

The tables were cleared of all pens and pencils and we had a full day of lessons without any books. Our no pen day saw us working collaboratively and developing our communication skills. We held debates, discussed resilience and learned how to say the date in French. Our maths lesson involved working together to solve multiplication problems using counters and number cards and completing various puzzles.

Today, we had our second 'No Pen Day' of the academic year! Along with that, we had some of our parents come in to school and see their children learning. The parents enjoyed coming to learn some maths and watch the children tackle some challenging work - loop card games involving fractions, decimals and percentages and a square number problem where children had use patience, resilience and determination to find a solution. We also spent our morning looking at different ways on how we could practise our spelling without using pen and paper. We thoroughly enjoyed the 'Taboo' game where we had to describe a particular Year 5 and 6 spelling. In the afternoon, we learnt about adaptation and mutations - how plants and animals adapt in order the survive in a certain biome.

This week we have been learning number bonds to 20. We used our existing knowledge of number bonds to 10 and our number bonds song to help us learn the number bonds to 20. “We will need to add 10 onto each number bond because 20 is 10 more than 10”. “20 has two tens not one ten.”
Exploring Shape, Space & Measure!
Date: 27th Nov 2019 @ 8:24pm
We started off the week by exploring the question, 'how big is my foot?' We drew around each child's foot and then used cubes to measure each one. We looked at how we could find out who had the biggest foot, and counted the cubes to find out! We have also investigated capacity this week. We used lots of different containers off all shapes and sizes with different amounts of objects in, talking about when they were full, nearly full, half full or empty! During WNRW last week we explored weight, weighing different bags of items and talking about which were heavier or lighter. We have continued to use weighing scales in different areas within Nursery this week, exploring what heavy and light feel like by using a selection of objects. By the end of the week we moved onto exploring shape. We made shape monsters using 2D shapes, and also created a shape obstacle course outside, travelling across and underneath objects to see if we could find a particular named shape at the end.

Nursery rhymes play an important part in early childhood development and education, as well as being fun they help children develop social, physical and emotional skills. We have particularly concentrated on 5 nursery rhymes this week, focussing on one song each day. We started the week with 'Baa Baa Black Sheep,' where we looked at weighing different bags of objects, talking about which were heavier and lighter. We then moved on to 'Down in the Jungle,' where children looked at ordering animals by size. On Wednesday we sang 'Row, Row, Row your boat,' and made bottle cap sailing boats, talking about how we could get them to go faster! On Thursday we were lucky enough to have some of our adults join us to celebrate World Nursery Rhyme week, and we showed them everything we have been learning, including our rhyme of the day 'Incy Windy Spider.' Today we have looked at 'Two Little Dicky Birds,' making our own birds in the craft area, and using seeds and lard to make bird feeders to hang on the trees outside! We have put them in the fridge to set over the weekend, and will be hanging them out next week and keeping an eye to see it we can spot any birds eating them! Children have been practising these songs as part of their BLT for the past couple of weeks and it has really shown in their work in Nursery, we have had a jam packed, fun filled week!
Date: 14th Nov 2019 @ 12:53pm
Year 4 had a great time during our whole school 'No Pen Day'. Pens and pencils were removed from tables and we did not write in any of our books - for example, in Maths we used Numicon, Base Ten and other manipulatives to solve a range of problems.
Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 8:15pm
Our story for the week has been the 'Stick Man.' We read the story together and learnt all about the 'Stick Mans' journey to return to his home. We went for a walk around the school gardens to search for the perfect sticks to make our own 'Stickmen.' We found lots of different natural materials in the garden, including lots of different sizes of sticks! We took them back into Nursery, where we looked sorted them into length order, talking about the longest and shortest sticks. We have made 'Stick Men' at our Play Dough table, using the different tools and resources available to create individual features on our men. At our Maths table we have been practising creating squares, triangles, and rectangles using sticks, and in our water tray we have been looking at floating and sinking! We also created our very own 'Stick Man' sun catchers, have a look at them next time you come into Nursery! Hopefully the sun will be shining through them!

Year 2 had a lovely morning when parents came into visit to see what they were learning in Maths. Parents supported their children by helping them count and use their problems solving skills. Children had to work out different number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. The children had to solve the puzzle matching all the correct number bonds and had to make sure in the end that they had made a triangle.
Date: 7th Nov 2019 @ 4:00pm
The children and parents were Nature Detectives. Parents learnt ways to support their child's reading. writing and maths with a Nature theme. They learnt how to support learning at home and in school and each family made a scrap book to record their learning. Parents learned more about the KS1 curriculum and went on an educational visit and learnt about how we grow our fruit and vegetables.
They also made a planter out of paper, planted a seed, to grow in the ground.

Year 5 had a great time during our whole school 'No Pen Day'. Pens and pencils were removed from tables and we did not write in any of our books. During our maths lesson we used counters and coins to solve addition and subtraction problems. Our history lesson was a top secret mystery about Ancient Egyptian mummification. We had to work collaboratively to work out how the Ancient Egyptians used to deal with their dead!
Date: 17th Oct 2019 @ 4:23pm
This half term on No Pen Day we explore Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice'. We enjoyed role playing different scenes and discussing how characters felt and acted. In Maths we investigated place value when carrying out efficient subtraction and how exchanging takes place. In History we investigated Tudors inventories and how this linked to their social class.
Date: 6th Oct 2019 @ 8:30pm
This week Reception enjoyed the visit from the book bus and we all had the opportunity to have a look at the book available. Some of the children were lucky enough to buy their own books. We counted out our coins and paid for the book by ourselves. We can't wait to share our new books with our grown ups when we get home.
Date: 19th Sep 2019 @ 9:21am
Year 2 have been working hard on understanding the place value in numbers up to 100 in Maths. We have been using lots of images and manipulatives to help us understand the actual size of numbers. We have also been thinking about how many tens and how many ones make up each number. This will help us to go on to order and compare numbers. We had fun representing numbers with equipment such as bead strings, Dienes, place value counters and Numicon.
Date: 12th Sep 2019 @ 9:23am
Children have been working hard this week on their place value skills. As this underpins all of maths, it is so important the children are aware of the value of each digit in a number. By using concrete items, doing various fluency challenges, children have used their understanding of number to solve one and two step problems.
Money, Money, Money - and Taxes!
Date: 19th Jun 2019 @ 3:47pm
On Tuesday we had an interesting visit from HMRC and learnt about who pays taxes, what the taxes pay for in the country and some weird facts about taxes! We learnt that people who earn over £12,500 pay 20% of their wages as tax, which the Chancellor of the Exchequer decides how to spend. We learnt that most of the money is spent on health, education, the armed forces with some being spent on cultural developments and protecting the environment.
Weird Facts - In the olden days there used to be taxes on windows so people bricked them up and in Russia they had a beard tax! McVities also took HMRC to the High Court to prove that Jaffa Cakes were a cake because they went stale instead of soft like a biscuit.
We then thought about our own values and spending and how we are influenced to spend or save money. After discussing our choices, we thought about the impact of our spending on other people in the world and the environment, e.g. single use plastics and cheap clothes!

It’s not easy being without our teachers but we are doing a great job with our home learning by listening to and following video tutorials that Mrs. Hamilton and Mrs. Rose make for us. In Computing, we have completed 2 lessons on spreadsheets – both with a video tutorial to follow. This included learning how to add data to cells, change colour and font of text as well as the size of text and cells. We then progressed to learning how to use formulae in cells to complete calculations. In today’s lesson, we learned how to turn data into graphs and how to add a filter to sets of data so that we could order it smallest to largest and vice versa. We think we are doing well with our work!!

Year Two have had a busy half term, crammed with lots of learning. From calculating and finding number bonds in Maths, to appraising and creating Christmas
songs in Music. We have been Super Scientists by planning investigations about everyday materials and we really enjoyed using primary sources in History to find out more about why we remember soldiers from The First World War.

We have had a very busy week in Maths this week!
At the start of the week we continued our work on exploring teen numbers, showing the numeral in numbers, words and pictorial representation. We have then worked on showing numbers in different ways, for example on tens frames, part part whole models, with objects and with drawings.
As we continued through the week we then moved onto problems involving one more and one less. We recapped on when finding one more the number gets bigger, and when finding one less the number gets smaller. We learnt that there are 2 ways to describe a number, for example 17 is one more than 16, and 17 is also one less than 18.
In partners we then thought of a number and tried to describe it to each other using the language of one more and one less, and seeing if our partner could tell us the number in our head! We then explored lots of different practical activities to explore the concept of one more and one less, using numicon, objects, counters and more!
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Date: 15th Dec 2020 @ 2:41pm
Reception have been very busy the last few weeks getting ready for Christmas. The children have enjoyed role playing the Santa’s Workshop wrapping presents, writing list and designing and building toys for Santa. We have been reading lots of books about winter and Christmas including our favourite ‘Stickman’. We wrote simple words, captions and sentences about Stickman and enjoyed using the props at the storytelling table to retell it in our own words. In Maths we have been ordering numbers one to twenty and adding a subtracting single digits using festive objects. We have been making patterns using different Christmas items and putting Santa’s presents in order of size. We have been adding items to our celebration box and discussing how we prepare for Christmas with our families. At the creative area we have enjoyed making Rudolph using a range of different materials, thinking carefully how to attach legs and antlers and sponge painting our Christmas wreaths. What a busy few weeks of learning we have had

We have been on a bear hunt this week! We have read “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen and the children have really enjoyed joining in with repeated parts of the story. We have been exploring all the different colours and textures from the book like oozy brown mud and green swishy swishy grass. We’ve made collages with materials and explored different coloured paint. Some bears even got stuck in some gloop! We’ve been counting bears in the maths area and developing our finger muscles by pegging words from the story on to a washing line. Its been a beary good week!
