Today Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from local author/poet - Nathan Parker. He spent the first part of the visit talking about his works and his inspirations for writing. The children then took part in several short activities that got them to think about emotions and rhyming words. By the end of the session, the children created a whole class poem around pets - we all had a great time with Nathan and we hope to work with him again.

On Monday morning we travelled to Blackpool Sports Centre to take part in this year's Sportshall Athletics competition. The competition saw students compete in various field and track events, such as Standing Long Jump and the 4x1 Relay.

Unfortunately we fell short of qualifying for the North schools section but, as always, our pupils represented the school with great pride and attitude, with the team scoring highly in plenty of their events.

Year 6 - Using Music Notepad to Compose

Date: 24th Nov 2022 @ 7:11pm

We had a great music lesson today. We listened and appraised 'Fanfare for the Common Man' using the vocabulary on our new Music Listening Mats to describe the piece. We then went on to begin composing using the song 'Do What You Want To' as inspiration. We used the Music Notepad on Charanga to drag notes onto the stave. We listened to each other's compositions and provided feedback. We are looking forward to improving our compositions in the next lesson.

Year 6 Geography - Where do people live in the UK?

Date: 23rd Nov 2022 @ 6:40pm

Our geography lesson this week asked the key question: Where do people live in the UK? We began the lesson by recapping on what we had already learned about the UK, including countries and capital cities. We then went on to learn about where people live, focusing on the key differences between cities, towns, villages and hamlets. We used online maps to locate towns and villages on the Fylde coast, towns and cities in Lancashire and major cities in the UK.

Year 6 - Magistrates Visit

Date: 22nd Nov 2022 @ 9:03pm

Today Year 6 were visited by 2 local magistrates. They gave the children information about the role of a magistrate and how they make their decisions when it comes to choosing the punishments given to those who have broken the law. We then acted out a mock trial where a child had been found guilty of cyber bullying through sending mean and threatening messages to another girl. We all enjoyed taking on our roles and acting them out.

Key Stage 2 Boys Football

Date: 21st Nov 2022 @ 3:39pm

This morning our KS2 boys football team travelled to Stanley Park to take part in the Utilita Cup, organised by Blackpool FC Community Trust. The tournament saw our boys placed into a group facing various schools from across the Fylde Coast.

The team battled well, representing Boundary well and putting their all into their performances. Falling short in the group stages meant we missed out on the semi-finals but the boys showed real determination, some fantastic skills and positive play against tough opponents.

Year 6 Haka session 2

Date: 17th Nov 2022 @ 11:26am

Today we had our second dance session based on the Haka. We recapped on the what we learned last week, which was the first 22 seconds of the dance. We then split the class and performed it at each other, making sure we used our faces to intimidate our 'opponents'. Once we had perfected the first section of the dance, we then improvised the next 22 seconds of the dance. We had to move as a group towards the other group and then perform our own actions that we thought would be inkeeping with the haka. Look at how firece we look!!

Year 6 Drugs talk

Date: 17th Nov 2022 @ 11:16am

Today we had a visit from Debby Savage, a local PSCO, who delivered a 2-hour talk to Year 6 about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. We had the chance to look at imitation drugs to know what they look like so that we know to avoid them as we get older - we were shocked to learn that some drugs can be disguised as sweets! She also told us the dangers of smoking and vaping. We learned that cigarettes are made up of lots of different parts - many of which can be very dangerous, such as amonia, glycerin, candle wax. Thank you Debby for such an informative talk.

Year 6 - Gender Stereotypes

Date: 15th Nov 2022 @ 7:17pm

Today we watched a video about gender stereptypes from Primary Futures. The video began by explaining that we were going to be introduced to 4 people whose jobs were:

  • Tree surgeon
  • Engineer
  • Forest school leader
  • Nurse

Before we actually saw the people, we had a good discussion as a class about what gender we thought the person who did each job would be. We realised that some of us went straight to a specific gender due to our prejudices about the roles of men and women in society. We then agreed that we can't make assumptions on people based slely on their gender.

Year 6 Stereotyping, Prejudice and Discrimination

Date: 15th Nov 2022 @ 5:38pm

As part of antibullying week, Year 6 have been focusing on stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination. We explored the meaning of each word before going on to find out how they can affect people. As part of the lesson, we completed two activities. In the first one, we looked at real news articles and discussed what prejudice had been shown and whom it was directed towards. The second activiity was based in the TV show 'The Apprentice'. We had to select an engineer for a project and 'fire' people based on information provided. We discussed prejudice and discrimination based on name, age, skin colour, disability, gender and sexuality.

Year 6 Playing 'Do What You Want To'

Date: 10th Nov 2022 @ 5:57pm

In this week's music lesson we moved on to playing the glockenspeils. After a quick recap of musical notation, we completed an understanding music warm up, which involved listening to and then copying back riffs. We then went on to learn how to play 'Do What You Want To', which is a song we have previously listened to, appraised and learned how to sing. The piece of music was quite fast so we slowed down the tempo to allow us to accurately play the first part of the song.

Year 6 DT - stitching

Date: 9th Nov 2022 @ 3:49pm

In DT today we have looked at 4 different types of stitching: running stitch, back stitch, over stitch and blanket stitch. The children practised each one to make sure their technique was good in order to use in their own piece in a few weeks times. We were very impressed with the skills the children demonstrated today.

Year 6 Haka

Date: 9th Nov 2022 @ 3:39pm

Today we began our dance journey in PE and this half term we are going to be focussing on the Haka. Today we watched the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team perform the Haka before a match and talked about their facial expressions and how they made themselves appear intimidating. We will be learning the basic parts of the Haka and adding our own bits to it as the weeks go on.

Year 6 Remembrance Day preparation

Date: 8th Nov 2022 @ 9:03pm

In Preparation for Remembrance Day on Friday, we have spent time this week making our poppies for our Remembrance Garden. Year 6 Adjectival Agreement in French

Date: 19th Oct 2022 @ 1:01pm

In the final session of our grammar unit we focused on adjectival agreement. In French, adjectives are spelt differently depending on whether the noun is masculine, feminine or plural. We finished the lesson by using our dictionary skills to find the gender of nouns before describing them using their colour.

Year 6 Creative Movement & Performance Festival

Date: 19th Oct 2022 @ 9:22am

On Thursday morning 10 pupils from Year 6 took part in a Creative Movement & Performance Festival at Blackpool Sixth Form. They were taken through a series of workshops, looking at acting, singing and dancing all based around the production "The Greatest Showman". This was held by Active Blackpool, using Sixth Form Leaders who taught the children lots of different performing arts skills.

The children worked hard putting on their best performances of clowns, strongmen and acrobats in their acting workshop. They then learned the lyrics to This Is Me in the singing workshop showing fantastic confidence, before moving onto a dance to the same song at the end.

The event was rounded off with a fantastic show from the Sports Leaders with a compilation from The Greatest Showman which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Year 6 Now Press Play

Date: 18th Oct 2022 @ 7:47am

Today we had our first Now Press Play session and we chose to listen to a Maya story. It involved the tale of a young Maya child, who is forced to leave their village when drought hits. On route, their mother is kidnapped by warriors from Tikal. Along with their friend - Ixcel - and your pet jaguar - Soft Paws - they make their way to Tikal to get their mum back. We enjoyed the session as it allowed us to imagine what life was like in a Maya village.

Year 6 Rugby in the Sunshine

Date: 16th Oct 2022 @ 8:11pm

We had a glorious day for our rugby session this week. The children had a chance to put into practise all of the skills they had learned in previous sessions to play a game. There was some excellent teamwork on show and all of the children demonstrated excellent sportsmanship.

Year 6 Calculating with Spreadsheets

Date: 16th Oct 2022 @ 8:08pm

This week we continued with our spreadsheet unit in Computing. We learned how to use formulae to calculate totals and averages before going on to order the data and find a percentage.

Year 6 Refraction

Date: 13th Oct 2022 @ 8:52pm

Today in Science we learned all about refraction, which is the slowing down of light as it passes through denser materials. To see this in action, we used a glass full of water and dropped a pencil crayon in the glass. We observed that the pencil crayon looked broken and distorted due to refraction occuring. We also learned that refraction can make objects appear to turn in the opposite direction. We foudn this out by placing an arrow behind the glass ad moving it slowly horizontally. We saw that the arrow appeared to change direction.

Year 6 Spelling Bee

Date: 11th Oct 2022 @ 6:40pm

This week we held the first Spelling Bee of the year. All children were tested on 30 spellings they have been learning this half term and the best speller in each house was chosen to represent their team.

Year groups from Year 2 - Year 6 were called out one at a time and the children were asked to spell three words orally. The overall winners were Chepstow, whose members didn't drop a single point, spelling every single word correctly.

We are very proud of the children that took part in the event as they showed many of our characteristics, such as courage, determination and participation. We will be holding 2 more Spelling Bee events over the year. We encourage all children to keep learning their spellings and access Spelling Shed as much as possible in order to improve their ability to spell a wide range of words.

Y6 Church Army

Date: 7th Oct 2022 @ 9:49am

Matthew and Jeni came to speak to Year 6 about sin, resurrection and salvation.

Matthew used the example of a 'Do not touch' sign as sin and that if Christians ignore the instructions from God and sin, this can become a habit and we can 'stick' with sinning - and Matthew got 'stuck' to the chair.

We discussed that Christians believe that, through talking with God, they can repent and ask for forgiveness and seek salvation from our wrong choices.

There was an opportunity at the end of the session to ask questions about the key words used during the session and Year 6 discussed the types of questions they wanted to ask, recorded them and then took part in a thoughtful question and answer time.
