Inspired by Hockney

In Art, we have been learning about the work of famous painters including Monet, Turner and Hockney. We looked in detail at how Hockney was inspired to paint lamdscapes using pop art influences. After learning how to create tone and texture using paint, we created our own landscape masterpieces inspired by Hockney's 'Mulholland Drive.'

RSE in Year 5

This week in RSE,Year 5 have been learning about puberty. We learned about the physical changes that happen to boys and girls as they grow older and discussed how to deal with these changes. 

Programming with Turtle

Tihis week we have been learning how to program with Turtle. We recapped on the definition of an algorithm and learned various commands to make the Turtle move, including forwards, backwards and left and right turns. We also leaned how to use the repeat command to so that we could reduce the number of lines of code needed. Finally, we learned how to debug an algorithm when the Turtle did not do as we expected. 

Dazzling Dancers!

This week, Boundary Primary School hosted a day of dance workshops. The children in Year Two and Year Five each recieved a dance lesson from Sarah Gough (from the Royal Ballet School and Blue Moose Dance Company).

Boundary hosted dance training sessions and a staff meeting attended by teachers from other local schools and staff and pupils both learnt  a lot throughout the day.

Year Five explored the topic of coasts through dance and Year Two visited the rainforest and the animals you would find there. A fantastic time was had by all!

Lifting with Levers!

We had a great afternoon learning about levers. The children were set the challenge of lifting Mr. Jones using only a brick and a plank of wood. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't - until we moved the brick!  They were then able to lift Mr. Jones off the ground using only one hand. We learned that if you move the fulcrum nearer to the load, less effort is required to lift it. 

Alarming Design Technology

Year 5 have been designing and constructing alarms to protect a valuable item. We looked at existing products, learned how to draw circuit diagrams, experimented with different types of switches and learned techniques to join wires. Our final designs used a push to break switch that activated the alarm when the item was removed. 

Sporting Stars!

Both Year Five classes spent a fun and energetic lesson doing a range of different athletic activities including: relay races, skipping, various throwing activities and sprinting. They finsihed up with an egg and spoon race which was enjoyed by all!

Twenty children from Year Five are going to be a Royal Shakespeare Company film this summer along with children from other local schools. Everyone has been really committed to learning their lines and are enjoying paericipating in such an exciting project! Here are a few photographs of the cast. 

Fantastic Forest School Fun For Year Five!

Year Five have been really enjoying their forest schools sessions! They have completed a collaborative challenge of building a  tower  using only natural materials, found tadpoles in the pond, built a campfire and sampled popcorn cooked on the fire. The children are currently working towards the completion of a forest schools certificate.

Learning about Life Cycles

We continued our science learning this week by investigating the life cycles of different animals. We compared the life cycle of a mammal, amphibian, bird and an insect. We learned that some animals lay eggs, while others give bith to live young. A mosquito's life cycle is only 7 days, while a dolphin can live up to sixty years. 

Marvellous Multiplication

We continued our journey in multiplication and learned how to multiply 4-digit numbers by 2-digits. After becoming fluent with the method, we moved on to solve more complex problem solving and reasoning tasks, including missing number probems and those involving using trial and error. 

Shakespearian Actors and Actresses!

French - What I wear to school

Our French learning journey continued this week and we introduced the verb Porter (to wear). We looked at different verb endings depending on who is wearing the item of clothing and then completed an activity about clothes that are worn to school. We then used bilingual dictionaries to find words of unfamiliar clothing items. 

Super Savoury Scones

Today was Design Technology day in Year 5. Our focus was cooking, specifically savoury scones. We started the day by learning about nutrients, healthy eating and food safety, before moving on to research and then taste various savoury products. We created design criteria and then practiced the skills we would need including weighing, measuring and combining butter and flour by rubbing in. After baking our scones, we evaluated the final product but all the children agreed that they were delicious!

As part of our PSHE topic of learning how to keep ourselves safe, we created role play situations in small groups demonstrating the dangers of particular hazards and how we could take steps to stay safe. We also played a safety board game in pairs.

Marvellous Musicals!

Fourteen children from Year Five took part in a musical theatre workshop with Georgia from the  Italia Conti Theatre School. Everyone loved learning to sing, act and dance musical numbers from the musical

A journey through the Americas

We began our new Geography topic - A journey through the Americas - with a quiz. We tested our general knowledge, working in teams. We then went on to use atlases and online maps to locate cities and physical geography features in North and South America.

Year Five enjoyed a coaching session with Alan Williams this week which had a focus on invasion games and ball skills. The children had to work well together as a team and focus on what the opposing team were doing. Everyone enjoyed the session!
