Year 1 Forest School

Date: 7th Jul 2023 @ 7:41am

Today our Forest School session was all about plants! We began by identifying plants around the area, looking closely at their leaves to help us. We then made our own transient flowers out of natural objects, planted seeds and small plants and used paint pens and charcoal to create drawings of flowers. By the end of our session we had found lots of different wild plants and garden plants, recapped on the parts of plants and the 5 things plants need to survive.

Year 1 Heritage Day

Date: 3rd Jul 2023 @ 6:10pm

Today we explored the key question, 'how has the Blackpool Tower Circus changed?' We began by learning about the circus in the past, the year it opened, what acts performed there and how it looked. We looked at both photo evidence and posters, discussing what clues we could see that gave us information about the past. We then learnt about how the circus has changed over time and created a timeline of the promotional posters used. Finally we created our own posters for the present circus! We are also all looking forward to our circus trip as part of our Heritage learning!

Year 1 World Music Day

Date: 29th Jun 2023 @ 12:29pm

To celebrate World Music Day, we focused on listening and appraising a range of music from the United Kingdom, before creating a short dance sequence inspired by a sea shanty.

Year 1 Together Time - Money

Date: 28th Jun 2023 @ 6:53pm

Today we enjoyed 'Together Time' with some of our grown ups. We began to explore coins for the first time, recognising the value of different denominations of coins. We matched the correct coin to the correct value, before using coins to make given amounts.

Year 1 Takeover Day

Date: 22nd Jun 2023 @ 5:52pm

Today was takeover day! With our new teachers we revisited the concept of 1 more and 1 less in the context of numbers from 50 to 100 by applying the counting skills we have previously learnt. We read the story ‘More or Less’ to introduce our lesson. Together, we then revisited the words ‘more’ and ‘less’ reinforcing the fact that 1 more is the number after the given number and 1 less is the number before the given number. We then worked independently to choose a task card, identify the number and then find one more and one less than this number. Finally we played a one more and one less game on Topmarks to show our new teachers everything we had learnt!

Year 1 Noah

Date: 20th Jun 2023 @ 7:13pm

Today we learnt how Noah put his trust in God and read the story 'Noahs Ark.' We discussed the importance of the rainbow as a sign of Gods promise and thought about why people might need reminders of the importance of promises. We learnt that a Jewish person might say that although people often forget their promises, God does not and so they believe that they can always trust in God. We then ordered the story of Noah in partners and recorded ourselves on Seesaw retelling the story in our own words. Finally we listened to the song ‘Arky Arky’ which also supported us to understand the key parts of the story.

Year 1 Partitioning Numbers

Date: 19th Jun 2023 @ 6:41pm

Today we further developed our understanding of place value for 2 digit numbers, now partitioning numbers up to 100. Together, we identified how many tens and how many ones make a range of numbers within 100, recognising that it does not matter whether we record the tens part or the ones part first, as the whole number remains the same. We then investigated partitioning numbers with concrete resources, such as base 10 and place value counters.

Year 1 Julia Donaldson Stories

Date: 19th Jun 2023 @ 11:42am

Today we continued our Reading into Writing journey - Julia Donaldson stories. We read an extract from 'The Gruffalo' and 'Room on the Broom' and found the key features of each, including capital letters, speech marks and adjectives. We used our criteria to enable us to find each feature and mark it in the correct colour.

Year 1 Zog

Date: 17th Jun 2023 @ 5:24pm

This week we began our next journey, reading stories by the same author. Today we read 'Zog' by Julia Donaldson. We discussed the story together before looking indepth at the setting, characters and the key events at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Year 1 Grouping Data

Date: 13th Jun 2023 @ 5:26pm

Today we learnt about data and information. Firstly, we learnt that labelling, grouping and searching are important parts of data and information. Through different activites, we then learnt to describe objects using labels, match objects to groups, identify labels for groups and describe properties of objects.

Year 1 Sports Day!

Date: 24th May 2023 @ 7:04pm

Today Year 1 enjoyed sports day! We participated in team races, cup stacking, speed bounce, dome and dishes, welly throwing and bean bag throwing. We all had a fantastic morning and thoroughly enjoyed participating in all the different activities.

Year 1 Sunflower Science

Date: 23rd May 2023 @ 9:16pm

During this half term we have been growing sunflowers for our science topic. We ended our topic by observing over time the changes that happened from seed to small plant, we saw how the plant had grown a stem and some leaves, as well as roots under the soil. We recapped the topics we had covered including evergreen and decidious trees, wild and garden flowers, seeds and bulbs - we have identified, sorted and classified plants. We then used our collaging art skills to create a model flower that included the roots, stem, leaves, petals and flower.

Year 1 Farm Visit

Date: 23rd May 2023 @ 5:50pm

Today we enjoyed a visit from Fisher's Farm and their very friendly animals! We were all looking forward to seeing the animals and finding out more about them. We looked around the different pens and asked the visitors questions such as, 'What food do they eat?' 'How old are they?' and 'How do you care for them?' We even stroked and brushed some of the animals!

Year 1 Finding Half

Date: 17th May 2023 @ 6:53pm

Today we built on our knowledge of recognising a half of an object or shape to now find a half of shape or an object. Throughout todays lesson, we had lots of opportunities to practically find and make half using pictures, objects and shapes. We experimenting different ways of making a half using a range of resources, reinforcing that a half means ‘one of two equal parts.’

Year 1 Digital Art

Date: 15th May 2023 @ 6:18pm

Today we were very excited to be able to use the Chromebooks! We began by thinking about how we can paint using computers and we were introduced to 'Paintz.' We explored all of the different tools available and began to choose appopriate shapes and colours to create a digital picture in the style of an artist. We looked at art work created by Eric Carle and created a picture in this style.

Year 1 Acrostic Poems

Date: 10th May 2023 @ 6:58pm

This week we wrote our spring acrostic poems. We used everything we had learnt from finding features in poems to create a descriptive poem with alliteration and similies! We tried very hard with the presentation of our poems and we were all very proud of the results!

Year 1 Doubling

Date: 10th May 2023 @ 6:54pm

Today we worked on becoming more confident with doubling numbers up to 20 and began to explore doubles beyond 20. Independently, we built doubles and explained what a double is using objects, mathematical resources and pictures, using the STEM sentence ‘double __ is __’ to reinforce our understanding.

Year 1 Celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III

Date: 5th May 2023 @ 12:46pm

Today Year 1 enjoyed the whole school celebrations for the coronation of King Charles! We decorated our crowns, created collages of King Charles, played regal games and ate a delicious lunch! We all had a brilliant day.

Year 1 Wild and Garden Plants

Date: 3rd May 2023 @ 7:11pm

Today we learnt the difference between wild plants and garden plants. We looked at lots of different examples and named these together, talking about how these plants are similar and how they are different. We then sorted some pictures into wild plants and garden plants, using a plant identification key to help us!

Year 1 Counting in 5s

Date: 3rd May 2023 @ 6:48pm

Today we learnt how to count in steps of 5 using different representations, including tens frames, dice and 50 square. We began our lesson by reading the story ‘Starry Arms – Counting in 5s.’ As a class we then practised lots of examples together orally to practise our skills. We continued to use language associated with multiplication, for example ‘there are __ equal groups of 5, there are __ altogether. We answered key questions, including how many groups of 5 are there? What number is this? How many groups of 5 are there in __?

Year 1 Measuring Capacity

Date: 26th Apr 2023 @ 6:37pm

Today we measured and compared the capacity of different containers using non-standard units of measure. We recapped on our understanding of the word capacity and understood that this is how much of something it can hold. We then watched Miss Kay measuring the capacity of a container, making sure the units of measure remain the same and measuring the capacity accurately by filling the container to the top. We recognised that by finding the capacity of different containers, we could work out which containers have a greater capacity and how we know this. We then compared more than 2 containers, putting them in either ascending or descending order of capacity.

Year 1 Object Manipulation

Date: 25th Apr 2023 @ 5:39pm

This week we explored how to travel with a ball at our feet with confidence. We began by dribbling the balls around a given area, touching with our big toe and then touching with our little toe. We had lots of chance to practise this and then moved onto manipulating the ball in different directions. We also leant how to stop a ball with our foot and kick accurately to a partner, before playing some dribbling games.

Year 1 How Should We Treat The Environment?

Date: 21st Apr 2023 @ 6:25pm

Today we began to discuss our key question in RE, ‘How might beliefs about creation affect the way people treat the world?’ We began by learning the name of the religion we will be learning about and that Muslims believe there is only one God – Allah. Todays lesson involved learning about how we should treat the environment, why it is important and whose responsibility it is. We did this through looking at images and real life nature examples. We went on a nature walk to collect lots of natural resources and we then used these natural resources to create transient nature pictures.
