Year 1: Blog items

Year 1 Subtraction

Date: 6th Dec 2023 @ 7:06pm

This week we have learnt to use our knowledge of number bonds to find parts, and represent them using the subtraction symbol. We focussed on the meaning of the subtraction symbol and used part whole models to support us to write the related subtraction facts and start to build our understanding. We then moved onto answering missing number problems, subtracting by taking away and subtracting using a number line.

Year 1 Features of our school grounds

Date: 1st Dec 2023 @ 2:16pm

Today we began our Geography lesson by recapping on the key words urban and rural and features of each. We found the differences between rural and urban areas and recapped on the type of settlement we live in. We then began to learn about the features of our school grounds. We discussed the features we expected to find around our school grounds and considered how we were going to record our findings. Whilst outside, we completed our sheet with a partner and we discussed our findings together as a class. We then looked at aerial views of our school grounds. We identified and labeled the key features of our school area using words, pictures or Seesaw to create labels.

Year 1 Transparent or Opaque?

Date: 29th Nov 2023 @ 6:16pm

Today we helped Ted solve another problem! Firstly, we learnt our new vocabulary. We learnt that transparent means it allows light to pass through so that objects behind are seen easily. We also learnt that opaque means that no light is able to pass through it. We looked at different examples together until we were confident in identifying transparent and opaque. We then learnt that Ted had another problem! His new house needed curtains because his windows are transparent and let lots of light in. We then tested different materials to offer him advice on which material would be best to make curtains from. We identified how to make it a fair test and the method we needed to follow.

Year 1 Together Time

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 5:51pm

Today we began to formalise the idea of addition as bringing two or more parts together to create a whole. We completed three different tasks that encouraged us to explore and focus on bringing two parts together. We used the correct mathematical language to explain, e.g. ‘3 cubes plus 5 cubes is equal to 8 cubes.’ Some of our grow ups joined us for ‘together time’ and we showed them how we use tens frames, counters, part whole models and cubes to support our learning.

Year 1 Number Bonds

Date: 15th Nov 2023 @ 7:21am

Today we combined our knowledge of the part-whole model and addition facts to explore number bonds within 10. We started with the whole number and broke numbers into parts; exploring how many different ways a number can be partitioned. We explored this using double sided counters, tens frames and dot patterns. We worked through different examples together, noticing that we see numbers made from dot patterns differently, exploring these patterns and discussing these different ways of thinking. We continued to look at number sentences written with the symbols in different places and talked about the commutative nature of the calculations.

Year 1 Waterproof or Absorbent?

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 7:50am

Today we used what have learnt about materials, their properties and our new vocabulary to solve Ted’s emergency. We had to test the best material to make Ted an umbrella so he could stay nice and dry! We read our brief and collected the equipment needed for our test. We discussed how we were going to make it a fair test, by using the same amount of water and the same amount of time. We then worked in small groups to complete our experiment. In these groups we made our predictions, before following our method. Finally we all came back together to discuss what happened during the test? Did we correctly guess what would happen? What have we found out from doing the experiment and if we were going to do the equipment again what would you do differently?

Year 1 Fact Families

Date: 8th Nov 2023 @ 6:39pm

This week we have explored how to write number sentences to represent combining two or more parts, using the equals symbol to show the equivalence between the whole and the sum of the parts. Once our understanding was established, we then explored writing number sentences in a different order.

Later in the week, we then build on this learning by exploring addition fact families. We recognised that the order of an addition sentence can be varied and began to discover that addition is commutative.

Year 1 Poppy Art

Date: 7th Nov 2023 @ 12:44pm

Today we used pastels, pencils, pens and Seesaw to create our poppy art. We talked about what Remembrance is and why it is important before watching the poppies Remembrance animation on CBeebies.

Year 1 - Local Area Walk

Date: 6th Nov 2023 @ 12:32pm

Today we went on our local area walk around Grange Park. Whilst on our observational walk we looked for different types of houses, similarities and differences between them and how Grange Park has changed over time. At the end of our walk we then visited @thegrange. We met with Anna and Claire who showed us around the gardens and talked to us about the different services @thegrange offers.

Year 1 Part Part Whole

Date: 2nd Nov 2023 @ 5:33pm

This week, we have explored parts and wholes using part-whole models. We have experimented with physical objects, drawing pictures and placing counters on the part-whole model. We have been using STEM sentences to decribe what we have been doing and to describe the parts and wholes in a variety of ways.

Year 1 Forest School

Date: 2nd Nov 2023 @ 12:29pm

Today was the first of our three Forest School sessions this half term. It was a wet and cold morning but we thoroughly enjoyed our session! We began our session by looking at lines and shapes in nature. We then looked at artwork by Andy Goldsworthy, before exploring and creating our own natural artwork.

Year 1 Materials

Date: 30th Oct 2023 @ 7:02pm

In todays lesson we explored what an object is and what materials are. Working together, we explored our classroom and school environment to find and name different materials. We shared our own experiences and knowledge of materials and where we have found them.

Year 1 No Pen Morning

Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 7:06pm

Today we consolidated the skills learnt from our place value work this half term to demonstrate how to find numbers on number lines when asked key questions, e.g. what is one more/one less than __? Which numbers are greater/less than __? Which is the greatest/smallest number? As it was no pen day, we worked on pre drawn number lines, both in the classroom and outside.

Year 1 Grouping Data

Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 6:52pm

This week we have been begun our grouping data unit of work. We have learnt that labelling, grouping and searching are important aspects of data and information and have begun to understand that to search data we need labels. Throughout the week we have completed different activities to describe objects using labels, match objects to groups, find objects with similar properties and compare groups of objects.

Year 1 Reading Champions

Date: 13th Oct 2023 @ 1:26pm

Well done to all of our Reading Champions so far in Year 1! Remember, the criteria for how to be a reading champion is in your reading diaries and includes reading three times a week and sharing your favourite book either on Seesaw or in class.

'My favourite book is any book about dinosaurs!' Lennox

'I like my Paw Patrol book and my favourite character is Skye' Dolly Anne

'My favourite book is The Dinosaur Who Pooped The Plannet!' Eliza

Year 1 Baptism

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 6:22pm

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about baptism. This week we had a visit from Reverend Thompson, who came into our classroom to tell us about his job and talk to us about baptism. We revisited our previous learning about baptism with Reverend Thompson and the important artifacts, such as the font, candle and water. He also told us the important part the Godparents and vicar play in a baptism ceremony. Reverend Thompson then showed us how he conducts a baptism and explained to us that new members of the congregation are also given a candle as a symbol of light. After our visit we then created baptism certificates, thinking carefully about what images, symbols and words we could include to show that a baby is now a member of the Christian family.

Year 1 Sense of Taste

Date: 2nd Oct 2023 @ 7:11pm

Today we continued to learn about our senses in Science whilst focusing on our sense of taste. We learnt new vocabulary associated with taste, which bit of the tongue is associated with each taste and all the different parts of the mouth. We then used the new vocabulary we had learnt to try and to describe the taste of lots of different foods!

Year 1 Spirals

Date: 2nd Oct 2023 @ 7:05pm

Today in Art we explored using our whole body to create spiral drawings. We used chalk, pens, pastels and pencils to create spiral drawings – first outside with large-scale drawings and then in our sketchbooks. We also practised making spirals to music; talking about how the music made us feel and how we could use this to create spirals that reflect our emotions and mood. We created quiet spirals and LOUD spirals!

Year 1 School Council Elections

Date: 28th Sep 2023 @ 5:43pm

Today Year 1 voted for our class school councillors! This week we have been learning about democracy and what it means. We learnt that in Year 1 we get to make important decisions, such as who we want to be our class representatives for the school council. Children who wanted to be considered delivered their manifestos and explained why they would be a good school councillor and what they would do to make Boundary a better place. Well done to everyone who participated and to our new Year 1 school council representatives!

Year 1 Counting Backwards

Date: 26th Sep 2023 @ 6:15pm

Today we worked practically to count backwards within 10 from any given number. We found given numbers on our number lines and learnt how to use them to find the number before, stating the oral sentence, ‘the number that comes before __ is __.’ We looked at different representations, including number lines and tens frames, to find missing numbers using what we had learnt about the number before.

Year 1 Target Games

Date: 19th Sep 2023 @ 5:22pm

In PE this week we have been answering the question, how do I roll a ball at a target? We have focused on rolling different objects and thought about how we could roll things faster and slower. We took part in four different games to help us practise our rolling skills.

Year 1 Observational Walk

Date: 18th Sep 2023 @ 5:36pm

Today we began our second lesson on senses. We recapped the fact that we have five senses and the body part associated with each. We then focused on hearing and sight. Firstly, we talked about the sense of hearing, which body part we use and what is happening when we hear. We played sound bingo with a range of common sounds. We had to listen very carefully!

After this we moved onto our sense of sight. We again discussed which body part we use and what is happening when we see something. We then did an illusions test! Some of us could see both pictures and some of us could only see one! We also learnt the different parts of our eyes, including eyelashes, eyebrow, pupil and eyelid.

We realised that there are lots of things we do that use more than one sense! We then went on an observational walk around our school grounds, inside and outside, focusing on what we could see and what we could hear. We stopped on the playground, closed our eyes and focused on the sounds around us. We also walked through school and listened to the sounds coming from all around our school!

Year 1 Mini Mes

Date: 18th Sep 2023 @ 5:09pm

Over our first couple of weeks in Year 1 we have been exploring our new classroom environment and resources. We have been working independently to complete our 'mini me' tasks in the provision. We have learnt to use resources such as sound mats and number lines to support our ability to work independently when accessing these tasks.

Year 1 Visit 'The Attic'

Date: 17th Sep 2023 @ 5:16pm

Today we had our first visit to the new school library, 'The Attic.' We all loved seeing the new space and we can't wait to be able to read lots of new books!

Year 1 Family

Date: 14th Sep 2023 @ 6:58pm

Today we began learning about Christianity by exploring families and belonging. We explored the fact that all families are unique and discussed who is in our family. We thought about different relationships and about how they might be similar and different to others. We learnt that Christians believe that God is like a father who guides them and helps them. We then created our own family portrait, sharing how our families look after each other.
