Year 1 Sense of Taste

Date: 2nd Oct 2023 @ 7:11pm

Today we continued to learn about our senses in Science whilst focusing on our sense of taste. We learnt new vocabulary associated with taste, which bit of the tongue is associated with each taste and all the different parts of the mouth. We then used the new vocabulary we had learnt to try and to describe the taste of lots of different foods!

Year 1 Spirals

Date: 2nd Oct 2023 @ 7:05pm

Today in Art we explored using our whole body to create spiral drawings. We used chalk, pens, pastels and pencils to create spiral drawings – first outside with large-scale drawings and then in our sketchbooks. We also practised making spirals to music; talking about how the music made us feel and how we could use this to create spirals that reflect our emotions and mood. We created quiet spirals and LOUD spirals!

Year 1 School Council Elections

Date: 28th Sep 2023 @ 5:43pm

Today Year 1 voted for our class school councillors! This week we have been learning about democracy and what it means. We learnt that in Year 1 we get to make important decisions, such as who we want to be our class representatives for the school council. Children who wanted to be considered delivered their manifestos and explained why they would be a good school councillor and what they would do to make Boundary a better place. Well done to everyone who participated and to our new Year 1 school council representatives!

Year 1 Counting Backwards

Date: 26th Sep 2023 @ 6:15pm

Today we worked practically to count backwards within 10 from any given number. We found given numbers on our number lines and learnt how to use them to find the number before, stating the oral sentence, ‘the number that comes before __ is __.’ We looked at different representations, including number lines and tens frames, to find missing numbers using what we had learnt about the number before.

Year 1 Target Games

Date: 19th Sep 2023 @ 5:22pm

In PE this week we have been answering the question, how do I roll a ball at a target? We have focused on rolling different objects and thought about how we could roll things faster and slower. We took part in four different games to help us practise our rolling skills.

Year 1 Observational Walk

Date: 18th Sep 2023 @ 5:36pm

Today we began our second lesson on senses. We recapped the fact that we have five senses and the body part associated with each. We then focused on hearing and sight. Firstly, we talked about the sense of hearing, which body part we use and what is happening when we hear. We played sound bingo with a range of common sounds. We had to listen very carefully!

After this we moved onto our sense of sight. We again discussed which body part we use and what is happening when we see something. We then did an illusions test! Some of us could see both pictures and some of us could only see one! We also learnt the different parts of our eyes, including eyelashes, eyebrow, pupil and eyelid.

We realised that there are lots of things we do that use more than one sense! We then went on an observational walk around our school grounds, inside and outside, focusing on what we could see and what we could hear. We stopped on the playground, closed our eyes and focused on the sounds around us. We also walked through school and listened to the sounds coming from all around our school!

Year 1 Mini Mes

Date: 18th Sep 2023 @ 5:09pm

Over our first couple of weeks in Year 1 we have been exploring our new classroom environment and resources. We have been working independently to complete our 'mini me' tasks in the provision. We have learnt to use resources such as sound mats and number lines to support our ability to work independently when accessing these tasks.

Year 1 Visit 'The Attic'

Date: 17th Sep 2023 @ 5:16pm

Today we had our first visit to the new school library, 'The Attic.' We all loved seeing the new space and we can't wait to be able to read lots of new books!

Year 1 Family

Date: 14th Sep 2023 @ 6:58pm

Today we began learning about Christianity by exploring families and belonging. We explored the fact that all families are unique and discussed who is in our family. We thought about different relationships and about how they might be similar and different to others. We learnt that Christians believe that God is like a father who guides them and helps them. We then created our own family portrait, sharing how our families look after each other.

Year 1 Our Sense of Touch

Date: 11th Sep 2023 @ 5:36pm

Today we began to explore our five senses by naming each sense and the part of the body that is to do with each sense. We then focused specifically on our sense of touch. We recapped on the different parts of the hand, including thumb, palm, skin and wrist. As a class, we then discussed what is touch? What happens when we touch something? And is it only our hands that we touch with?

‘We touch with our skin!’

‘Your sense of touch tells you if something is hot or cold.’

We talked about what is safe and unsafe to touch, completed ‘I can feel’ sheets, labeled the properties of these objects and completed a mystery box feely activity.

Year 1 Outdoor Learning

Date: 10th Sep 2023 @ 4:47pm

During our first week in Year 1 we have explored our new provision, both inside and outside the classroom. We have enjoyed making the most of the nice weather and spent lots of time outside practising our counting, making numberlines, writing lists and captions and grouping and sorting objects.

Year 1 Goals

Date: 7th Sep 2023 @ 7:27pm

Alongside the rest of the school, Year 1 have been thinking about our goals for the year. We discussed how we needed to choose a sensible goal and think of ideas to make a plan for how we are going to get there. We had lots of good ideas and are looking forward to taking small steps towards our goals!

Year 1 Grouping and Sorting

Date: 6th Sep 2023 @ 6:21pm

During our first week in year one we have been grouping and sorting! We have used a number of different objects and talked about what is the same and what is different. We have learnt we can sort by colour, by shape, by type and by size. We have learnt how to log into our own Seesaw account and post pictures of our learning! We have also been exploring our new classroom environment and completing lots of maths challenges in the provision.

Year 1 Making Birds

Date: 17th Jul 2023 @ 6:16pm

Today we began to develop our understanding of structure and build on our making skils. Our exploration started with careful looking and drawing, experimenting mark-making with a variety of media. Later this week, we are going to explore how to make 3D forms, before creating our individual 3D birds.

Year 1 Sukkot

Date: 12th Jul 2023 @ 7:46pm

Today we learnt all about the Jewish harvest festival, Sukkot. We then designed our own Sukkah, using various materials to create our model. We followed the criteria to ensure our Sukkah had three walls, a roof made from something natural and decorations of things from the harvest. We worked successfully as a small team to plan and problem solve with our group members.

Year 1 Circus Trip!

Date: 11th Jul 2023 @ 2:18pm

Over the past two weeks, both Year 1 classes have been to visit the Blackpool Tower Circus! We had lots of fun watching the entertaining acts, including the acrobats, motorbikes and of course Mooky and Mr Boo!

Year 1 Forest School

Date: 7th Jul 2023 @ 7:41am

Today our Forest School session was all about plants! We began by identifying plants around the area, looking closely at their leaves to help us. We then made our own transient flowers out of natural objects, planted seeds and small plants and used paint pens and charcoal to create drawings of flowers. By the end of our session we had found lots of different wild plants and garden plants, recapped on the parts of plants and the 5 things plants need to survive.

Year 1 Heritage Day

Date: 3rd Jul 2023 @ 6:10pm

Today we explored the key question, 'how has the Blackpool Tower Circus changed?' We began by learning about the circus in the past, the year it opened, what acts performed there and how it looked. We looked at both photo evidence and posters, discussing what clues we could see that gave us information about the past. We then learnt about how the circus has changed over time and created a timeline of the promotional posters used. Finally we created our own posters for the present circus! We are also all looking forward to our circus trip as part of our Heritage learning!

Year 1 World Music Day

Date: 29th Jun 2023 @ 12:29pm

To celebrate World Music Day, we focused on listening and appraising a range of music from the United Kingdom, before creating a short dance sequence inspired by a sea shanty.

Year 1 Health Week

Date: 28th Jun 2023 @ 7:03pm

This week Year 1 have taken part in lots of different activities for Health Week, including a yoga workshop, a dance workshop and a visit from our school nurse. We have enjoyed taking the oppourtunity to learn new skills and to take part in these different experiences.

Year 1 Together Time - Money

Date: 28th Jun 2023 @ 6:53pm

Today we enjoyed 'Together Time' with some of our grown ups. We began to explore coins for the first time, recognising the value of different denominations of coins. We matched the correct coin to the correct value, before using coins to make given amounts.

Year 1 Takeover Day

Date: 22nd Jun 2023 @ 5:52pm

Today was takeover day! With our new teachers we revisited the concept of 1 more and 1 less in the context of numbers from 50 to 100 by applying the counting skills we have previously learnt. We read the story ‘More or Less’ to introduce our lesson. Together, we then revisited the words ‘more’ and ‘less’ reinforcing the fact that 1 more is the number after the given number and 1 less is the number before the given number. We then worked independently to choose a task card, identify the number and then find one more and one less than this number. Finally we played a one more and one less game on Topmarks to show our new teachers everything we had learnt!

Year 1 Noah

Date: 20th Jun 2023 @ 7:13pm

Today we learnt how Noah put his trust in God and read the story 'Noahs Ark.' We discussed the importance of the rainbow as a sign of Gods promise and thought about why people might need reminders of the importance of promises. We learnt that a Jewish person might say that although people often forget their promises, God does not and so they believe that they can always trust in God. We then ordered the story of Noah in partners and recorded ourselves on Seesaw retelling the story in our own words. Finally we listened to the song ‘Arky Arky’ which also supported us to understand the key parts of the story.

Year 1 Partitioning Numbers

Date: 19th Jun 2023 @ 6:41pm

Today we further developed our understanding of place value for 2 digit numbers, now partitioning numbers up to 100. Together, we identified how many tens and how many ones make a range of numbers within 100, recognising that it does not matter whether we record the tens part or the ones part first, as the whole number remains the same. We then investigated partitioning numbers with concrete resources, such as base 10 and place value counters.

Year 1 Julia Donaldson Stories

Date: 19th Jun 2023 @ 11:42am

Today we continued our Reading into Writing journey - Julia Donaldson stories. We read an extract from 'The Gruffalo' and 'Room on the Broom' and found the key features of each, including capital letters, speech marks and adjectives. We used our criteria to enable us to find each feature and mark it in the correct colour.
