This week we have been learning all about shapes in nursery. We have been identifying a square, rectangle, triangle and circle and have started to learn the properties of each shape. The children have explored shape through printing, buildling, sorting and by finding shapes in everyday objects. We have also been looking at how we can arrange shapes to make pictures and have created a rocket and a house using shapes.
Nursery Find Some Poo in the Zoo

It's not everyday you go to school and are allowed to talk about poo but that's exactly what happened this week in nursery! We read the story "Poo in the Zoo" all about a zoo keeper who is always cleaning up the animals poop. That is until one day when an Iguana eats some fireflies and ends up doing an amazing glowing poo! The zoo keeper sells the magical poo to Hector Gloop who collects poo (yuk!) and buys himself a Robot Pooper Scooper with the money! The children really enjoyed the story and made their own magical poos, counted poos, and painted some tiger stripes. We talked about herbivores and carniviores and added leafs to the playdough to create herbivore poo. For health and safety puproses, no real poo was used the process!

Nursery took part in science day by exploring space through art, maths and music. They created a wonderful piece of collaborative art work showing a super outer space scene. They then created their own space pictures. Using shapes, the children then made some 3D rockets. They thought carefully about the shapes they would need and where to put them. To end the day, the children enjoyed a space themed music session. They sang "Zoom, Zoom, Zoom" and sent planets soaring in to the air using the parachute!

We have been readig the story "Dear Zoo" and have enjoyed exploring all the animals from the story. The children have investigated farm animals and zoo animals and sorted them in to two groups and they have made up stories about zoo animals using the zoo small world. The children have painted some wonderful pictures of zoo animals and made some swirly snakes. Outside they built cages for animals using magnetic shapes, made playdough zoo animals and created some food for the animals.
Nursery - Developing our Mark Making Skills

The children are working really hard developing their mark making skills. At this stage there are alot of skills for the children to develop. They have to develop their fine and gross motor skills so their muscles are strong enough to support their pencil grip, they have lots of opportunities to practise drawing lines and circles which goes on to support letter formation and once they have made marks on paper or begun to copy some letter shapes, the children give meaning to the marks they have made on the paper. This week we have been reading "Dear Zoo" and the children practsied their writing and mark making by writing labels for the zoo animal and writing to the zoo to tell them which pet they would like.

We had some visitors in Nursery today. Woody from Toy Story came for a snack, The Grufflo explored the maths area, we had a visit from Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs, Little Red Riding Hood built a tower and Peter Rabbit hopped by! Then Dorethy came by with Toto the dog, Alice in Wonderland did some drawing and a Cheerleader shook her pom poms! Later they all sat together to make a bookmark. If only everyday could be like World Book Day!

Nursery have been undertaking their superhero training this week. They had to complete a superhero obstacle course being careful not to fall in the river of crocodiles and making their way carefully down the slide of snakes! They designed and made their own superhero cuff that gave them superpowers and made their own masks. There were lots of superhero activities including measuring superheroes, rescuing the superheroes who had been captured by the baddies and making up stories using the small world figures. We also read a fab story called "There's A Superhero In Your Book" by Tom Fletcher. It has been a super week!

Nursery Find a Pea on the Loose!

We had to be very careful in Nursery this week as there was an evil pea on the loose! We read the story "Supertato" and discovered that the peas had escaped from the nursery freezer! Luckily we managed to find them all with the help of the Wanted posters the children created. Then we discovered peas trapped in jelly and the children had to use their fine motor muscles to try and pull them out using tweezers. We explored lots of different vegetables and create some really delicious looking vegetable soup. The children even made their own evil pea and supertato using materials to create collages. Now we have to keep checking to make sure there are no more esca-peas!

Nursery celebrated Pancake Day on Tuesday. We read the story "Mr Wolf's Pancakes" and wrote shopping lists of all the ingredients we needed. Then we worked together to mix the batter and Mrs Welch cooked the pancakes! We chose the toppings we wanted, we could have chocolate spread or lemon and sugar. They were delicious and there were lots of cries of "Please can I have some more!"
Nursery Try and Stop the Naughty Bus

We have been reading a super story called "The Naughty Bus" all about a little red bus who gets himself in to all sorts of trouble! The chilldren have enjoyed making their own buses using chairs, painting pictures of buses and playing a bus counting game. We decided that the bus needed stopping so we made stop signs. The children worked hard writing the letter "s" and loved holding up their stop sighs for the naughty bus!

The nursery children have shown a real interest in building over the last few weeks. They have worked together to build some amazing constructions and have worked as a team to build tall towers, ramps for cars and houses. The children were so good at solving problems that they only needed a little help from the adults - super work!

The children really enjoyed reading The Gingerbread Man this week and have used story props to retell the story and designed their own gingerbread man. To finish the week off we made our own gingerbread biscuits (luckily they didn't run away!). The children had to take turn with the mixing, help to measure out the ingredients and make sure they put the right number of buttons on the biscuits. The chidlren were excellent bakers and the biscuits tasted delicious!
Nursery Enjoyed the Snowy Weather

Nursery didn't let a little bit of snow and ice stop them from having fun! The children went outside and explored the icy conditions by touching the ice and discussing what it feels like. We used words like cold, spikey, hard and melt to describe the ice. The children were very excitied to find that the water in the mud kitchen had frozen and some bowls had been frozen under the ice!
Nursery Welcome Some New Friends

We have had some new children join us in nursery and we have had lots of fun getting to know them. They have been exploring the environment and learning all about the nursery routines. We have been so proud of how well they have settled in and can't wait for lots of adventures!
Nursery - Why Did Your Snowman Melt?

Nursery have been talking about winter and what it looks and feels like. We thought about the different types of weather you can get during the winter and of course we started talking about snow. We talked about it being really cold when it snows and when it starts to get warmer the snow will melt. This led us on nicely to an activity where the children created a melted snowman using shaving foam and PVA glue. They then had to think carefully about why their snowman melted. Here are some of the children's ideas; My snowman melted becasue "of the sun" "he had a warm bath" "i put him near the fire". Why did your snowman melt?
Nursery Brave the Cold for Forest School

Nursery enjoyed a fun if not very chilly Forest School session! They played games to keep themselves warm and had a great time exploring all the frost and ice outside. They also enjoyed a cup of warm apple juice to warm themselves up.

Nursery had a super time at our Christmas party. We played party games including Pass the Parcel, Musical Statues and Musical Bumps. The children had to listen carefully to the rules and did so well following the instructions. In the morning we went on a Santa Hunt and found clues all across the school left by Santa. There was glitter, reindeer antlers, a Christmas Tree and even a welly! We searched everywhere, but coudn't find Santa. When we got back to Nursery, we found that Santa had been and left us a sack full of presents! In the aftetnoon we were lucky eneough to meet the man himself - it was so exciting!

Nursery put on a super performance at out annual Christmas Sing-along. The children worked so hard to learn a selection of Christmas songs, learnt how to sign along to "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and used a variety of instruments to accompany the songs. It was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents at the sing-along and they even enjoyed a tasty mince pie at the end of the performance.

It's been all sparkles and magic in nursery as we begin the count down to Christmas! we've been making Christmas cards, writing letters to Santa, making snow monsters out of playdough and christmas candy canes using pipe cleaners and beads. We've even been helping Santa wrap all the presents in the Elf workshop! As well as all this, we all wore our Christmas jumpers and had a Christmas disco! All that and there's still one more week to go!

We have been reading the story "Whatever Next!" By Jill Murphy. In the story a little bear makes a rocket out of a cardboard box and flies to the moon! We have had some super spaced themed activities including making space ships out of shapes and throwing the right number of space rocks in to a box. A favourite was making a giant planet by splatttering paint - great for working those big muscles. The chiildren also did some great mark making describing their trip to the moon.

In Nursery we have been exploring space and we thought it would be great if we could make our own planets! We put some shaving foam on a plate and then added some paint. We swirled the paint around using a stick and them gently pressed a circle on to the mixture. Then we lifted the circle up and hey presto - we had made a planet!
Nursery Won't be Beaten by the Weather!

We won't let a bit of rain stop us from exploring outdoors! There is still pleanty of fun to be had in the rain. The children enjoyed looking after our outdoor classroom by picking up leaves with the litter pickers (also great for physcial development), they had great fun sliding down the extra slippy side and even found out you can still play a drum in the rain!
Nursery - Aliens Love Dinopants!

It's been pants crazy in nursery this week! We have been reading the story "Aliens Love Dinopants" all about aliens and dinosaurs who share a love of underpants! The children have been busy designing their own underpants and creating their own aliens. They really enjoyed blowing paint with a straw and adding eyes to make an alien! They have been counitng aliens, matching pants with the same pattern and feeding aliens at the funky fingers table! One day we even discovered some alien eggs. We waited patiently until they were ready and then we help the baby aliens hatch from the eggs!

Nursery have been exloring Autumn this week. We have talked about all the signs that it is Autumn including colourful leaves, conkers and acorns on the ground and the weather getting a bit cooler. The children have loved looking at Autumn objects with a maginifying glass and talking about what they could see. We also made some great leaf people - everyone looked different! To help us develop our subitising skills, we picked a card with 1,2, or 3 dots on and then had to add the same number of leaves to a tree and for our fine motor muscles the chilren put loom bands on pinecones and used tweezers to move conkers in to a bowl.
