Year 2- Forest School Fun Part 2
Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 10:43pm
This week in forest school we had another fantastic session and managed to enjoy some sunshine! We started by discussing who can help us in case of an emergency on a mountain side and made ourself an emergency shelter before exploring the areas. We said we wanted to focus on frogs so we discussed a frogs habitat, life cycle and food chain before going pond dipping to see what wildlife we could find. We found: water beetles, worms and even a dragonfly nymph that was wrapped up, keeping warm in the pond weed.
Year 6 - Investigating Refraction
Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 8:26pm
Year 6 has a great Science lesson this week. The children were amazed by the illusions created by refraction. We learned that refraction distorts images and can even reverse them!
Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 3:46pm
In Science, we were testing which materials were attracted to a magnet. We made predictions on each object and then tested it with a magnet. The children were excited to find out that objects made of metal were attracted to metal, but we found out not all metal is magnetic.
Date: 2nd Oct 2024 @ 4:53pm
Today, we began learning about food chains. We thought about food chains. We thought about which habitats each animal lived in to help us. Then we began to think about what each animal ate to make a food chain. We learnt the arrow means ‘is eaten by.’
Year 4 - Changing States of Matter
Date: 1st Oct 2024 @ 3:42pm
This week, we looked at changing states of matter. This half term, we have been focusing on solids, liquids and gases. So today we looked at what the terms are called when they change from one to another. We started the lesson by holding a piece of chocolate (solid) in our warm hands. This made the chocolate melt and this happened because we increased the temperature. Later in the lesson, we looked at whether salt would make ice melt quicker. It did because the salt and ice melt to make saltwater and that has more particles in it.

We used the data we gathered from our Science experiment to create digital bar graphs using an online data program. We labelled the axis, gave the data a title and input the results carefully. Once the bar graph was complete we then analysed the data.
We found that the car moved much further down the ramp of smooth wood and it travelled the least down the ramp covered in bubblewrap. This is because there was less friction between the car wheels and the smooth surface and more friction between the wheels and the uneven surface of the bubblewrap.
Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 12:48pm
Today we had our first forest school session! It was a little wet but we had great fun. We started by finding Birch trees (one of our Year 2 class names) and then we went on to have a minibeast hunt. We found slugs, spiders, woodlice and worms!
Year 6 - Investigating Shadows
Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 12:42pm
Our science lesson this week was all about shadows. After recapping on our learning from previous weeks, we were set the challenge of investigation various questions such as what material creates the darkest shadow and how can you make a shadow smaller or larger.
Date: 24th Sep 2024 @ 6:17pm
Today we explored another of our five senses. We learnt about the sense of smell and which part of our body we use to smell, before exploring new key vocabulary. We applied this new vocabulary together to match smell pots in small groups. We had to match the pots to find the one with the same smell, answering key questions such as ‘what are the smells?’ ‘are they nice of unpleasant?’ and ‘have you smelt this before?’ In our outdoor area we also explored different smells and scents to create our own perfumes.

You never know who you're going to find in the nursery garden! This week we found a very large slug! The children were fascinated watching him move around and noticed that his antennaes went into his head when they touched something he didn't like. We talked about what the slug might like to eat and decided it was probably leaves and not pizza! We were all cheering the slug on as he tried to climb the steps. We're not sure if he made it, but the next day he wasn't there so we think he must of reached the top!
Year 6 - Investigating Light in Science
Date: 19th Sep 2024 @ 10:25am
Our Science topic this half term is light. After recapping on our learning from Year 3 and discussing the vocabulary that we need to know, we learned that light travels in a straight line. We conducted an experiment to prove this.
Year 5 - Masters of the Universe
Date: 17th Sep 2024 @ 4:36pm
In science today, we created a scale replica of our solar system. We found the distances of the planets from the sun in Astronomical unit (AU), and converted this to meters. 1 AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun, so on our model Earth was 1 meter from the Sun. As you can see the rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are relatively close together, whereas the gas giants are further apart.
Year 4 - Density and Viscosity
Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 9:21pm
Some tricky new vocabulary for Year 4 today. We learned all about density (heavy) and viscosity (thickness) of liquids and did some little experiments to find out more. Oil is less dense (‘heavy’) than water, so it ‘floats’ on top of the water. The fizzy tablet makes a gas (carbon dioxide). Gases are less dense (‘heavy’) than water or oil, so it goes up through both liquid layers. When the gas goes up, it mixes some of the particles of oil and water together. Different liquids have different viscosities (thicknesses). The more viscous the liquid is, the longer it takes for the bubble to move through. In liquids that are more viscous, the particles are closer together than in less viscous liquids.

During our Science unit, Forces and Magnets, we conducted an investigation to find out how a car would travel on different surfaces. We thought about how we would keep our investigation fair, what we would change, what we would keep the same and what we would measure. We also made predictions before carrying out the investigation in small groups, We recorded our results in a table and during our next Science session we will think about what the results tell us.
Date: 15th Sep 2024 @ 7:52pm
This week, Year Two continued their learning of Living things and their habitats by going into our School grounds and forest school area to find what microhabitats we have around us and the minibeasts we could find in each habitat. We looked under logs and wooden objects, in the long grass as well as looking at the pond. We found: a ladybird, slugs, snails, woodlouse and spiders. We then discussed the conditions in each of the microhabitats that made it suitable for each of the minibeasts.
Year 4 - What's are solids, liquids and gases?
Date: 9th Sep 2024 @ 4:07pm
This week, we started our States of Matter unit in Science. We explored what the particles of a solid, liquid and gas look like. During one of the activities, we went outside and acted like particles ourselves.
Date: 8th Sep 2024 @ 4:24pm
Today we learnt about the human body. We sang and followed the actions to ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes’ and played Simon Says to learn about key parts of the human body. We introduced names of new parts of our body and learnt where these are located. We drew around a body outline and matched widget labels to key parts of the outline, as well as adding some more of our own! Finally, we pieced together a mixed up person jigsaw and verbally told the adults in our room the body parts we could identify.
Acorns - Visit to Farmer Parrs
Date: 16th Jul 2024 @ 1:11pm
This term Acorns have been exploring growth on the farm. We have been learning about different animals and the habitats on the farm.
Acorns have enjoyed their trip out to experience the farm first hand. Acorns enjoyed seeing the variety of animals on the farm, watching them eating and seeing where they lived.
We found the animals a little noisy but loved the opportunity to copy them too!
We even saw some alpacas and deer. What a great day!
Date: 15th Jul 2024 @ 4:48pm
Today in science, we revisited our 'Sound' topic. Firstly, we completed a flashback about how sound travels. Then, we were asked to move around the room and solve 10 clues which gave us a code to escape a recording studio. All of the clues were based on key concepts that we had learnt in Year 4. Therefore, we had to apply our knowledge of these to answer the questions.

Thoughout the year, Gardening Club have been busy developing our school grounds.
They have collected and planted seeds from the flowers, planted bulbs for the Spring, planted vegetables and fruit and cleared weeds. They have met every week, for most of the school year, and have not stopped.
"Not as much grows in Winter as it is too cold" Connor
"We take the seeds off the Sunflower in Autumn so we can plant them in Spring to grow in the Summer" Neel
"We need to weed so we can plant the seeds" Charlotte.
"The plants need the sunshine as it is warm and then the strawberries will grow. We will water them if it doesn't rain" Lauren
"We picked the strawberries and ate them at the end of the club- they were so juicy and sweet" Gracie
Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 2:57pm
Today we had a visit from a local farm and we had a great time. We got to see and pet a range of farm animals: goats, sheep, cows, chickens, rabbits and a pig! We were told how to safely pet/handle the animals and were allowed to groom and brush some of them.
Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 2:51pm
In this lesson we recapped our knowledge of light! We conducted an investigation to see if the length of the shadow was affected by the distance of the light source.
Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 2:31pm
All of the year 5 pupils had a brilliant time at the zoo. We saw lots of fantastic animals including lions, tigers and penguins. We also had a lesson from the zoo staff about 'Animal Classification', which linked to our science topic.
Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 2:26pm
Today we were lucky enough to be visited by Fishers Farm! We enjoyed seeing and learning about all the different animals and talking to the people who look after them. We asked lots of questions to help our understanding.
Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 12:18pm
We were so lucky to have a mobile farm visit us at school this week. The animals were so lovely and the children were able to brush the goats and pony. The goats were a bit cheeky and tried to lick our fingers and the sheep were nore interested in eating their hay! The children were very gentle with the animals and throughly enjoyed the experience.
