Acorns have been listening to our adults talk about new life spring brings and this week we went on a spring walk.
Acorns had lots of fun exploring our forest school area and looking at all the different flora and fauna around us.
We enjoyed using visuals to find different plants and tick them of our checklist.
Acorns were excited to see tadpoles from our little pond and enjoyed watching them swim in the bucket.
We are curious to see what they grow up to become and are looking forward to learn about their life cycle next term.
We were excited to spot some butterflies and collected some natural materials to create our very own natural art butterflies after learning about the butterfly lifecycle this term.
Reception- The very Hungry Caterpillar

We have been reading the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
It is about a very hungry caterpillar that consumes a variety of foods before making a cocoon and becoming a butterfly.
We have had lots of fun retelling the story with our friends using stick puppets, painting a caterpillar, creating our own caterpillar using art resources and making a paper plate butterfly.
Finally, we wrote about our favourite part of the story.

Today we learnt the differences between bulbs and seeds. We learnt that a seed is part of a plant that a new plant grows from and they can be all different shapes and sizes! We then learnt that a bulb is also a part of some plants that can be found underground, storing food for the plant, ready for when it grows. We then completed a bulbs and seeds sort, looked at examples of bulbs and seeds and made observational drawings of bulbs and seeds.

Acorns have been learning about the life cycle of butterflies. We have enjoyed singing the life cycle rhyme to support our understanding and even had tiny little caterpillars come to live in class with us. We have been very curious over the last two weeks, watching them growing. We now have 5 very big caterpillars who are just turning into their chrysalis. It has been very exciting watching the caterpillars get bigger every day and we can’t wait to see what emerges from their cocoons.
Acorns - The Hungry Caterpillar

This week Acorns have been reading the Hungry Caterpillar. We have engaged in a variety of learning activities and experiences to support our understanding of the world around us and the life cycles of butterflies. We have enjoyed making hungry caterpillars in Art and even feeding our very own hungry caterpillar. We found caterpillars and butterflies everywhere, including in our tuff tray and our 'Bucket'. We even had our very own caterpillars come to live in Acorns! We can't wait to see what happens.

Acorns have been developing an understanding about how plants grow. We have explored the need for sunlight, water and soil to be able to grow. Acorns have planted their own beanstalks and cress. We enjoyed filling the plant pots and planting the big seed (bean) and the smaller seeds (cress) and listening to an adult talking about these. We have had fun watering them and checking to see how they have been growing over the last two weeks. We are excited to see the beans beginning to grow taller!!
Reception- What Does a Beanstalk Need to Grow?

A very mysterious letter arrived in Reception from Jack (and the Beanstalk!). He wanted us to find out what a beanstalk needs to grow so off we went to investigate.
We discovered that it needed soil, water, sunlight and air. The children looked at the different phases in the lifecycle of a bean and how it changes each time. We then labelled the parts of the bean using scientific vocabulary, root, shoot, seedling, leaf, and flower. Then we planted our own beans with Mrs McAllister and wrote instructions on how to plant them.

Today we learnt about the different ways that seeds disperse. We did a carousel around the room completing different activities that included an experiment, a cloze passage, sorting activities and even popping balloons!

Nursery had a visit from Zoo to You this week. The children got to meet Mishell the snail, Milly the millipede, Jagger the bearded dragon, Zeus the snake & Spike the guinea pig. Gemma from Zoo to You told a story about walking through the woods and we met all the different animals on the way. The children were so excited to meet the animals and were brave enough to stroke them all!
Nursery and The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We have been reading the story "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. The story is brilliant for teaching the children the days of the week, counting and exploring the life cycle of the butterfly. The children have been busy outside looking for caterpillars - we haven't found any yet! We have leanrt the caterpillar starts with a "C" and thought of other things that start with a "c". The children have also enjoyed leanring a new song that teaches us about the liec cycle of a butterfly.

It has an ordinary Thursday in Nursery when Mrs Robinson from the office arrived with a special delievry! What could be inside the box? We tried to guess and some people thought it might be a puppy while others thought it might of been a lizard! All good guesses - but no! Inside the box we found some teeny, tiny caterpillars! We can't wait to watch their transformation in to butterflies!

Nursery continue to learn about growth and change and this week we have been reading the story "Ben Plants a Butterfly Garden". In the story, Ben plants some wild flower seeds in his garden to encourage butterflies to come and visit - he even finds some caterpillars! We planted our own wild flower seeds and are looking forward to watching them grow. The children have also spent time exploring flowers and looking at their individual parts, sequenced how to grow and seed and created some collage flowers and some transient art flowers.
Reception- Looking for signs of Spring.

This week we have been looking for signs of Spring in our school grounds.
It was a little bit chilly but we wrapped up warmly and ventured out into the sunshine.
Around school, we found tulips growing, buds beginning to sprout on branches, pink and white blossom blowing in the wind, a birds nest and even some tadpoles swimming in our school pond.
As we discovered something new, we ticked it off our list until everything had been found- we were very lucky indeed!

Today we explored the parts of plants. We dissected the plants to examine the parts. We used magnifying glasses to take a closer look. We found roots, buds, flowers, leaves and stems. We then looked at the roles of these parts.

This morning the children in Reception enjoyed going on a spring walk around the school grounds including; out outdoor garden, forest school and the woodland area outside year four. The children spotted blosoom on trees, flowers growing like tulips and dafodills, leaf buds and even a birds nest.

Today Year 1 enjoyed No Pen Day! We began our Science lesson by identifying the different parts of a tree, including the roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves and crown. We then labelled these parts on a tree independently, either using the text tool on Seesaw or reading the parts and matching them to the correct label.
We then learnt what the words deciduous and evergreen meant. We looked at examples of each and discussed what we noticed about the different leaves. We learnt that evergreen leaves are usually thicker, leathery and waxier than the leaves of deciduous trees. We felt some examples from different trees, including holly, laurel and hazel. We then completed an evergreen and deciduous tree sort.

This week the children in Reception have been learning about how to keep ourselves healthy. We talked about having a healthy diet, identifying specific foods that are healthy and others that we should just have as a treat. We talked about the imporantce of getting plently of sleeps and keeping active through exercise. We discussed how many times we should brush our teeth each day and why this is important. Throughout the week we completed lots of different tasks including; making a healthy fruit kebab snack, sorting different foods into healthy choices and occassional treats, practised washing out hands properly, practising brushing our false teeth and exercising in out outdoor area.

This half-term our science unit is about 'All living things and their Habitats'. Our journey started with exploring the lifecycle and reproductive process of flowering plants. In this lesson, pupils dissected a daffodil to find the different parts of the flower, such as the sepal, style and anther.

This term, Nursery are going to be learning about growth and chnage, To start us off we have be been reading two stories "Sam Plants a Sunflower" and "Jasper's Beanstalk". In both stories the characters plant and a seed and take care of it until they grow big and storng. All the children planted a sunflower seed and now we have to take good care of them all so they can grow.

Today, we planted sunflower seeds, broad beans and cress seeds so we can observe them over time and see how they grow and change. We are exploring what a bean needs to germinate, what conditions a sunflower need to grow and how sunlight affects the growth of cress. After we had planted them we made predictions as to what we think will happen and look forward to observing them over the next few weeks to see what happens.
Eco- Reception welcomes a new arrival

Before the Easter holidays, the children discovered a birds nest in our bushes in the outside area. They decided that they needed to be very quiet and not play near it so the eggs could hatch and the bird felt safe.
Today, we went to check if anything had happened and we could not believe that there were two baby birds huddled together in the nest. Once again, we need to stay away and keep quiet until the babies have flown the nest.

Today, we went on a ‘Sound Walk’ around school. Before we went, we discussed what areas of school might be loud and which might be quiet. We spoke about how there might not be areas around school which are silent because of outside factors such as the building works and vehicles.
When we returned from our walk, we spoke about HOW we hear sounds. Our teachers banged on drums with rice and we noticed that they moved. The banging of the drum caused vibrations!
Reception- Holly Trip To The Zoo.

On Tuesday Holly Class visited Blackpool Zoo. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny Spring day and everyone enjoyed visiting all the different animals and the habitats they live in. Some were hot, some were wet and some were very smelly!
We saw lions, tigers, zebras, monkeys, gorillas, orangutans, flamingoes, pelicans, farm animals, wolves, lemurs, parrots, camels, elephants and many more! We watched the sea lion show, and learnt a few interesting facts, and had an exciting classroom experience where we looked at parrot feathers, camel fur, a turtle shell, a huge elephant tooth and some of us were even brave enough to hold a cockroach!

This week Year 1 children visitied the Sea Life centre. We enjoyed seeing all the different marine life, including sea turtles, jellyfish, starfish and lots more! We learnt lots about the different animals, their diets, size and where they come from in the world.
