Year 5 - Crazy Combustion

Date: 29th Oct 2024 @ 8:08pm

This week the children in year 5 have begun their learning journey into the states of matter. In this lesson, pupils conducted an experiment to prove that combustion requires oxygen, and that more oxygen allows fires to burn longer. We also measured the mass of a candle as it was burning, which showed that the wax was the fuel, and was being used to create the flame.

Year 4 - All about teeth!

Date: 29th Oct 2024 @ 10:18am

We starting our unit about Animals including humans and what a great start to the unit. We focused on our teeth. We explored which teeth we use to bite, tear, chew and grind - practising with an apple. Then we looked at the correct names for our teeth and their functions. We then used our knowledge of our teeth to make a model.

Acorns - Our senses

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 5:29pm

Acorns have been exploring their senses over the past couple of weeks as part of our topic marvellous me! We have been focusing on our touch and smell in particular and have enjoyed lots of sensory experiences to support our understanding.

Acorns loved having surprise cups to sniff. We didn't know what was inside them but all had a good sniff. Some were definitely much nicer than others, especially the garlic, yuk!

Acorns enjoyed exploring a variety of textures through touch. We especially loved our sensory walk without our shoes and socks on, so we could experience touch in different ways.

We can't wait to explore sight and sounds of Autumn next term.

Acorns - A surprise visit

Date: 15th Oct 2024 @ 8:20pm

Acorns have had a surprise visit today from a hedgehog brought in by Blackpool's hedgehog rescue. We were excited to meet the little hedgehog and watch him snuffle along our table. Carolyn talked to us about some hedgehog facts and we'll be learning more about nocturnal animals including hedgehogs next term.

Reception learn about Nocturnal Animals

Date: 14th Oct 2024 @ 10:07pm

This week we have been reading the story Oliver's Wood'.  It is all about a little owl Oliver who stays up late on night.  He stays up so late he see something strange that he has never seen before 'the big, round, warm sun'.  Oliver is so exvited to tell al his friends but when he goes to find them they are all asleep.

The children have been identifying different nocturnal animals sich as bats, hedgehogs, owls and badgers.  They have been  exploring what it means to be  nocturnal animal and how they have adapted to being awake a night like having excellent eyesight and hearing.  They also found out what the animals look like, and what they eat.  We were even lucky enough to be visited by Carolynne from Blackpool's Hedgehog Rescue who brought '---------" the hedge to meet us.

We have completed lots of different activities based around this theme including; labelling animals, sorting animals and even using different materails at the creative table to make them.  What a busy week!

"Bats have very good hearing' Dennis

"Owls have good eye sight so they can see in the dark' Lily-Mae

"My nanny has a hedgehog and it eats the worms and slugs in her garden" Freyja

"Nocturnal animals sleep in the dark and wake up at night" Kevin

Year 3 - Magnetic Investigation

Date: 13th Oct 2024 @ 2:37pm

We have been investigating magnetic strength and how magnets can act at a distance.  We started off by seeing if a magnet was strong enough to lift a paperclip off the table.  We were amazed to see that we could make the paperclip hover in the air.  This was because the magnetic force was pulling the paperclip towards it.

We then conducted an investigation into magnet strength. We wanted to find out if the size of a magnet affected its strength.  We measured the distance that a magnet could attract a metal ball from.  From the magnets we used, we concluded that the larger magnets had the strongest magnetic pull.  We also found out that a magnetic force can act from a distance so it doesn't need to be touching a magnetic object to attract it.

Acorns - Owl babies

Date: 10th Oct 2024 @ 4:23pm

Acorns have been reading Owl Babies. We have had lots of fun engaging with the sensory story.

Acorns have enjoyed the owl theme running through their learning experiences in maths, mark making and even developing their cutting skills. We even made our very own owls in art.

The best bit was getting to meet the owls when they came to visit!

Niursery and the Owls

Date: 10th Oct 2024 @ 2:20pm

After reading the story "Owl Babies" the children were really interested in owls. So you can imagine their excitment when four real life owls came to visit! The children throughly enjoyed leaning about the different tyrpes of owls, where they live and what they like to eat. They even got to hold Midge who is a very wise owl at 13 yeasr old!

Year 1 Drawing Body Parts

Date: 8th Oct 2024 @ 5:19pm

Today we looked closely at some different parts of the body, noticing the different parts that make up one body part, e.g. on our hand we have our fingers, nails, knuckles and thumb. We discussed the key parts that make up our hands, legs, ears and eye, before trying our very best to draw these key body parts, including the key features and detail. We began to understand the important role different body parts play and to orally explain what the main parts of our body do.

Year 2- Forest School Fun Part 2

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 10:43pm

This week in forest school we had another fantastic session and managed to enjoy some sunshine! We started by discussing who can help us in case of an emergency on a mountain side and made ourself an emergency shelter before exploring the areas. We said we wanted to focus on frogs so we discussed a frogs habitat, life cycle and food chain before going pond dipping to see what wildlife we could find. We found: water beetles, worms and even a dragonfly nymph that was wrapped up, keeping warm in the pond weed.

Year 6 - Investigating Refraction

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 8:26pm

Year 6 has a great Science lesson this week. The children were amazed by the illusions created by refraction. We learned that refraction distorts images and can even reverse them!

Year 3- Mighty magnets!

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 3:46pm

In Science, we were testing which materials were attracted to a magnet. We made predictions on each object and then tested it with a magnet. The children were excited to find out that objects made of metal were attracted to metal, but we found out not all metal is magnetic.

Year 2- Fantastic Food Chains

Date: 2nd Oct 2024 @ 4:53pm

Today, we began learning about food chains. We thought about food chains. We thought about which habitats each animal lived in to help us. Then we began to think about what each animal ate to make a food chain. We learnt the arrow means ‘is eaten by.’

Year 4 - Changing States of Matter

Date: 1st Oct 2024 @ 3:42pm

This week, we looked at changing states of matter. This half term, we have been focusing on solids, liquids and gases. So today we looked at what the terms are called when they change from one to another. We started the lesson by holding a piece of chocolate (solid) in our warm hands. This made the chocolate melt and this happened because we increased the temperature. Later in the lesson, we looked at whether salt would make ice melt quicker. It did because the salt and ice melt to make saltwater and that has more particles in it.

Year 3 - Data handling

Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 4:11pm

We used the data we gathered from our Science experiment to create digital bar graphs using an online data program.  We labelled the axis, gave the data a title and input the results carefully.  Once the bar graph was complete we then analysed the data.

We found that the car moved much further down the ramp of smooth wood and it travelled the least down the ramp covered in bubblewrap.  This is because there was less friction between the car wheels and the smooth surface and more friction between the wheels and the uneven surface of the bubblewrap.

Year 2- Forest School Fun!

Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 12:48pm

Today we had our first forest school session! It was a little wet but we had great fun. We started by finding Birch trees (one of our Year 2 class names) and then we went on to have a minibeast hunt. We found slugs, spiders, woodlice and worms!

Year 6 - Investigating Shadows

Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 12:42pm

Our science lesson this week was all about shadows. After recapping on our learning from previous weeks, we were set the challenge of investigation various questions such as what material creates the darkest shadow and how can you make a shadow smaller or larger.

Year 1 Our Sense of Smell

Date: 24th Sep 2024 @ 6:17pm

Today we explored another of our five senses. We learnt about the sense of smell and which part of our body we use to smell, before exploring new key vocabulary. We applied this new vocabulary together to match smell pots in small groups. We had to match the pots to find the one with the same smell, answering key questions such as ‘what are the smells?’ ‘are they nice of unpleasant?’ and ‘have you smelt this before?’ In our outdoor area we also explored different smells and scents to create our own perfumes.

Nursery Have a Garden Guest

Date: 20th Sep 2024 @ 2:36pm

You never know who you're going to find in the nursery garden! This week we found a very large slug! The children were fascinated watching him move around and noticed that his antennaes went into his head when they touched something he didn't like. We talked about what the slug might like to eat and decided it was probably leaves and not pizza! We were all cheering the slug on as he tried to climb the steps. We're not sure if he made it, but the next day he wasn't there so we think he must of reached the top!

Year 6 - Investigating Light in Science

Date: 19th Sep 2024 @ 10:25am

Our Science topic this half term is light. After recapping on our learning from Year 3 and discussing the vocabulary that we need to know, we learned that light travels in a straight line. We conducted an experiment to prove this.

Year 5 - Masters of the Universe

Date: 17th Sep 2024 @ 4:36pm

In science today, we created a scale replica of our solar system. We found the distances of the planets from the sun in Astronomical unit (AU), and converted this to meters. 1 AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun, so on our model Earth was 1 meter from the Sun. As you can see the rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are relatively close together, whereas the gas giants are further apart.

Year 4 - Density and Viscosity

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 9:21pm

Some tricky new vocabulary for Year 4 today. We learned all about density (heavy) and viscosity (thickness) of liquids and did some little experiments to find out more. Oil is less dense (‘heavy’) than water, so it ‘floats’ on top of the water. The fizzy tablet makes a gas (carbon dioxide). Gases are less dense (‘heavy’) than water or oil, so it goes up through both liquid layers. When the gas goes up, it mixes some of the particles of oil and water together. Different liquids have different viscosities (thicknesses). The more viscous the liquid is, the longer it takes for the bubble to move through. In liquids that are more viscous, the particles are closer together than in less viscous liquids.

Year 3 - Ramp Investigation

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 9:05pm

During our Science unit, Forces and Magnets, we conducted an investigation to find out how a car would travel on different surfaces. We thought about how we would keep our investigation fair, what we would change, what we would keep the same and what we would measure.  We also made predictions before carrying out the investigation in small groups,  We recorded our results in a table and during our next Science session we will think about what the results tell us.

Year 2- Finding Microhabitats

Date: 15th Sep 2024 @ 7:52pm

This week, Year Two continued their learning of Living things and their habitats by going into our School grounds and forest school area to find what microhabitats we have around us and the minibeasts we could find in each habitat. We looked under logs and wooden objects, in the long grass as well as looking at the pond. We found: a ladybird, slugs, snails, woodlouse and spiders. We then discussed the conditions in each of the microhabitats that made it suitable for each of the minibeasts.

Year 4 - What's are solids, liquids and gases?

Date: 9th Sep 2024 @ 4:07pm

This week, we started our States of Matter unit in Science. We explored what the particles of a solid, liquid and gas look like. During one of the activities, we went outside and acted like particles ourselves.
