Science: Blog items
Date: 16th Nov 2021 @ 7:10pm
Today we explored everyday objects and identified the materials they are made from. We learnt the new term ‘properties’ and what this means. We then sorted the objects based on their properties and completed a properties scavenger hunt. After we had worked independently on our hunt, we came together and discussed our whole class findings. Finally we had a think about why materials are chosen to make specific objects.
We are living in a material world...

This half term, our Year Two Science focus is Everyday Materials. This week we took our learning outside as we went on a material hunt. We were looking for items made from common everyday materials such as wood, plastic, metal, glass and paper. We also began to discuss the propetries of each of these materials such as whether they were hard or soft, rough or smooth, transparent or opaque. We found lots of items made from metal, plastic and wood but very few items made from glass and none made from paper which began to make us think about the durability of different materials.
Why are there so many leaves on the ground in Autumn?
Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 12:10pm
Holly went on a woodland walk to Salisbury Woods to find the answer to this question!
In the woods we saw lots of leaves on the ground, all different colours, and some were even falling to the ground as we walked along. We collected leaves, looked at their shape, size and colour and learnt that some leaves in Autumn die, change colour and then fall off the trees. We also learnt that some trees are evergreen and don't loose their leaves in Autumn but stay green all year".
We also had fun climbing trees, listening to the sound the leaves made as we ran through them, created leaf angels, played Pooh sticks and spotted some woodland animals, such as a Robin and a squirrel.
"This is a big leaf...it is brown and oval shape". Mercedes.
"The leaves make a crunchy sound!" Oscar.
"I see orange, brown, yellow and red leaves everywhere!" Jaxon.
"The leaves have died and fallen off the trees." Charlie
If you go down to the woods today..!

This week the children in Willow class enjoyed a trip to Salisbury Woods where we were observing seasonal change and collecting lots of autumnal objects like leaves, pine cones, acrons and conkers. The children had a great time exploring the outdoors and were even lucky enough to spot some woodland animals. When we returned to school we produced some lovely writing about the things we saw, made autumn sun catchers using the things we had collected and did some leave printing.

Hold the phone...! That's exactly what our Year 4's were doing in this weeks Science WOW lesson. We are focussing on sound this half term and we thought that this would be a great way to kick off our topic. We made phones with paper cups and string, looking at how the sound of our voices travelled through the string and to the other cup! We noticed that to hear our partner properly, the string had to be nice and tight and we had a great time along the way!
In space, no-one can here you learn
Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 4:08pm
This term our science topic is , 'The Earth and Space'.
We will be learning about some of the amazing things that can be found in the universe, including planets, moons and asteroids. In our first lesson, we worked together as a class to create a scale diagram of the planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Using the actual sizes, we calculated how big we would have to make the planets to fit on our classroom ceilling - Jupiter has a diameter of 142,800 km (11.2 x bigger than Earth), so in our diagram, Jupiter had a diameter of 66cm. We also used the same method to calculate how far apart the planets would be on our diagram, using their relative distance from the Sun - Earth is approximately 149,000,000 km (1 Astronomical Unit) away from the Sun, but on our diagram it is just 40 cm. The pupils then used real photographs of the planets to paint or colour them in the correct colours.

We started our new science topic – Electricity – by experimenting with electrical components to make various circuits. We worked out how to make bulbs light up, motors move and buzzers sound. We used switches to investigate what would happen when the circuit was broken and tested various materials for electrical conductivity.

Today we took part in the 'What's Under Your Feet? experiment.' We chose a patch to investigate in a section of grass near to our KS1 playground. Using a spade, we dug the top layer of soil and grass and tipped it onto a tray. We then sorted and identified the minibeasts we found in the soil, before very carefully putting them back and replacing the grass.

We took part in 'What's Under Your Feet' task where we had to check the food supply for birds. We threw a pencil onto the grass to select the area and this would be the place we were going to dig up to investigate. Once we had selected our area, we measured 30cm x 30cm ready to dig up. We used a spade to dig up the top layer of grass and soil and tipped it onto a tray. Using rulers and plastic dishes, we placed worms and other wildlife in to measure the lengths of the food source for birds. Whilst we were doing this task, we saw seaguls stamping their feet on the grass to trick the worms into thinking that it's raining so that they would come to the surface.
Shoot for the Stars! Science Club
Date: 21st Oct 2021 @ 4:08pm
Today was our last day of Science Club and we had a blast! We used baking soda and vinegar to creat a rocket and we also tried the Mentos challenge.
A huge thank you to all of the parents that joined us for the fun today, we had a great time and we appreciate your support.

Shadows were our area of investigation for this week's science lesson. We were presented with four key questions and various equipment that we could use to investigate them. We were asked to consider how shadows are created, waht creates the shape of a shadow and how you can make a shadow smaller or larger.
Science Club's Ice Cream Makers!
Date: 14th Oct 2021 @ 10:41am
In Science Club last week we made our own ice cream! We could not believe that we actually made it work. We started by pouring ice into a bag and adding salt to make the ice extra cold. We then added milkshake to a ziplock bag and put it inside the ice. After a long shake, we had ice cream! It was delicious!

Today in Science we made our very own sensory bottles using a range of colourful and textured objects. We recapped the five senses and how our senses help us explore the world and keep us safe. We linked our learning to World Mental Health Day and identified objects we wanted to add to create a sensory bottle to convey a certain emotion. Children classified the items into sensory groups and thought about how different items and colours might make people feel.

This week in Science we took part in an investigation to find out which materials are soluble.
We first ensured that we all knew what the terms around solubilty were so we could talk scientifically during our experiment.
We then took turns to gather a material and stir it into water and watch what happened. We used sand, rice, sugar, salt, coffee and whipped cream! As you can tell from the photographs, our children in Year 5 learnt so much about the materials and their solubility. Once we had finished our experiment, we spent time to write our results down and compare them with what different groups found.

Today, Year 2 explored their Science topic of Animals and their habitats further. We were aliens from another planet searching for another habitat and we had lost our co-pilot Shift. Whilst exploring the different habitats we encountered a variety of animals that would be found in that habitat. As we strolled through the rainforest a monkey helped us swing between trees and we grew feathers to keep warm in the Arctic. Miss Hooson and Miss Duckworth were impressed with the everyone's listening skills.

After reading the story 'Little Red Hen', Reception decided to bake their own bread but, unlike the story, they all helped each other to do it. Once it had baked in the oven, they all sat down and enjoyed eating their bread together.
They talked about the different ingredients in bread and why they were using a recipe. They discussed how the wheat grew and was then cut and ground at the mill where it turned into flour. All children mixed and kneaded the dough and, after sharing the bread to eat, many of them wanted another piece!
'It tastes warm" Mercedes.
"It is the best bread ever- so crunchy and then soft!" Charlie
'It's yummy!" Amelia

That's right! Today at Boundary was no pen day, and what a day we've had in Year 4. Lots of great discussion and debates going on in Reading into Writing about the differences between facts and opinions. In maths we were learning about adding 1, 10, 100 and 1000 to a 4-digit number with a fantastic activity to finish off the lesson! The this afternoon is Science we learned all about conductors and insulators of electricity and a good sessions trying and testing those using the circuits. Finally, to finish off the day we showed off our super search engine skills to find out information about a famous person! Unfortunately... Mr McCormack completely forgot at one point today and picked up his pen! He was subsequently told off my the childfren in Maple Class and even by Mr Bamber.

In Science, we have been learning all about forces. We decided to carry out an experiement to test which material would be best to drive a car on. We discussed how to keep a test fair and used our Working Scientifically butterfly to carry out the journey from asking questions to drawing conclusions.
We found out that the more friction between the surface and the vehicle the slower it moved and decided that smoother surfaces were much better to drive on. We thoroughly enjoyed being scientists!

This week in science we have been learning about the properties of different every day materials. We practically investigated the objects by trying to change their shape. We then made our own special material 'oobleck' and found out what the properties were, realising it was different depending on whether we were touching it or not.

This weeks science lesson was an investigation into materials: Which materials are electrical insulators?
We started by predicting which materials we thought were insulators and which were conductors. Then pupils made a simple circuit from wires, batteries and a bulb, and then created a gap in the circuit to stop the electricity flowing. The pupils then placed a selection of materials into the circuit and observed whether the bulb was illuminated or not. Pupils recorded their observations in a results table. We also discovered that some materials were better conductors than others - these made the bulb even brighter. Our conclusion was that metals are good conductors of electricty!

Year 1 have had a brilliant start to the new school year. We have enjoyed exploring our new classrooms and completing independent tasks in continuous provision, alongside our daily lessons. We have been accurately counting forwards and backwards in maths, writing labels and sentences about 'The Colour Monster' in Reading into Writing and exploring the human body and our five senses in Science. We have also enjoyed our Forest School sessions and exploring our local area
