We have been reading the story "The Bumblebear" By Nadia Shireen about a little bear who loves honey so much he decides to go to Bee School! We have looked at the repeated stripy pattern of a bumble bee, made playdough bees, counted bees and found out how bees make honey. We even made our own delicious honey and yoghurt dip. We've been very busy bees!
Reception: Holly Class- Down on the farm...

Holly class had such an enjoyable time when the mobile farm came to visit.
They met Helga the pig, Burt the cow and stroked the pigmy goats, rabbits and ducklings and also learnt about their young.
"You get milk from cows" Charlea-Rae.
"The goats are so soft" Mercedes.
"A lamb is a baby sheep" Alicja.
"Pigs have a snout not a nose" Charlie.
Year 3- Now Press Play Adventure

In Science today we had a great adventure using Now Press Play. During our adventure we discovered a new talking plant. It was our mission to find a suitable environment for it thrive. We discovered it would need sunlight, water, space and the correct temperature in order for photosynthesis to happen.

This week children in year 5 began their project to design and create a device that includes an electrical circuit and a switch. We have investigated and discussed products that are currently available, such as security lights and burglar alarms, and identified how they are turned on and off. Pupils used wires, batteries, bulbs and buzzers to revisit their prior learning about electrical circuits, and also to familiarise themselves with new equipment, like switches and ammeters. I am happy to say that there were a few 'lightbulb moments' and the children are now ready to start designing their own product.

Reception had a great time visiting the Mobile Farm on the playground. We met a calf called Burt and big pig called Helga. They also had an opportunity to stroke the baby rabbits, goats and ducklings. The children had a fantastic time learning about all the different animals, what they like to eat, the names of their young and why farms are important.

Year 2- How to plant a Sunflower seed

This half term in Year Two we have been focusing on our instructional writing. We learnt that instructions need to be clear and precise to ensure that someone can accurately follow the steps to end up with the same result. We decided we would write a set of instructions on how to plant a sunflower seed after learning about it in Science and having planted them ourselves. After we had planned each step from our memory of planting a seed, we then drafted and eventually after a little editing wrote up our instructions in neat. We now know we need to use time conjunctions to make sure people follow the steps in the correct order. Miss Duckworth and Miss Hooson were very impressed with our final pieces and the children cannot wait to bring their sunflowers home.

In Year Three we had a Design Technology day where we designed, made and evaluated fruit kebabs to make a healthy snack. This involved tasting a range of pre-existing products including pineapple, mango, cantaloupe melon, watermelon and pomegranate seeds. We rated them on taste, smell and appearance. This then led to use designing our own fruit kebab and even considered how to stay safe in a kitchen. Finally we were able to make and eat our healthy snacks!

Today we worked collaboratively to sort and compare a range of wild, garden, fruit and vegetable plants as well as evergreen and deciduous trees. We recapped on the key features of each category and what we mean by comparing, e.g. what is similar about them and what is different about them? We asked and answered questions about the parts of the plants including, the leaves, the flowers and the fruit. We used all our prior knowledge about plants to sort and compare the plants in small groups, discussing and justifying our answers to others in our group.

Year 5 visit Blackpool Zoo! To further their learning, Year 5 went on an adventure to learn more about the animals and natural habitats of the Zoo. From hearing about the Orangutans (and meeting Cherie who was named after Tony Blair's wife!) to watching feeding time with the elephants, we were all treated to a variety of interesting talks where we were able to learn more about how a range of animals have adapted over time to survive in their environments. It was really exciting to see the Bactrian camels being fed - they don't share with each other very well! Just before lunch we were treated to a sea lion demonstration where their natural ability to balance, swim, jump and dive were all on show - Gloria even demonstrated the importance of recycling our plastic and not throwing it on the floor or in the oceans!
Year 6 - The Circulatory System

In today's Science lesson, we learned about the human circulatory system. We found out that blood that comes from the body is deoxygenated. It gets pumped by the heart to the lungs where it picks up oxygen. The oxygenated blood then gets pumped around the body. We took our learning outside and created our own model of the circulatory system. We used blue cones to represent deoxygenated blood and red ones to represent oxygenated blood.
Year 5 are off the Richter Scale!

In Geography, Year 5 have been learning about earthquakes and tsunamis.
This week, each child was given a different earthquake to investigate and write a non-chronological report about.
We were devestated to learn about how earthquakes and tsunamis impact the world, but were pleased to learn that most countries who experience these often have a warning system.

This week we have read the fabulous story "Superworm" By Julia Donaldson. This story is great for developing an understanding of rhyme and the children were super at joining in with the rhymes. All our learning was based on the story and included comparing the size of worms, make worms of different lengths out of playdough and counting bugs and matching them to the correct numerals. The children got creative by making their own magic wands just like Wizard Lizards and made superworms living in a garden. They also practised writing their names by writing them inside a worm and explored capacity and what happens when they mixed different liquids to make magic potions.

In preparation for our Year 5 visit to the zoo, we have been learning about different amphibians and insects.
We first put a range of different animals into groups and discussed why we put them into those groups. Some children put the animals into blood types, land and sea animals or animals with a back bone (vertebrates). We will then go back at the end of the unit and re-classify them.
For our lesson, we became young David Attenborough's! We used SafeSearch to research the animals and used our online knowledge of Google Slides to create an interesting slide show.
Year 3 What is inside a plant?

In Year Three we have been investigating plants and today we focused on the different parts of a plant and what is the role of them. We carefully dissected lilies to locate the male and female parts of a plant and located parts such as the stigma, ovary, anther, stamen and petal.
Year 1 We're Going on a Plant Hunt!

Today we were learning to identify and name some common garden and wild plants. We discussed the question, where do plants grow? We worked as a class to think of as many places as we could. We then learnt that garden plants are usually planted and looked after by people and wild plants grow wherever their seeds fall. We looked at lots of different examples of wild plants and garden plants. We answered questions like, how would you describe these plants? How are these plants similar? How are they different? And where might you see these plants growing? We then went on a plant hunt around our school outdoor areas. We worked together to create a tally chart of plants we found and drew some observational drawings.
Reception The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This week, Reception have been reading the story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. They have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and have been observing the changes in our own class caterpillars. Using resources from our creative area, the children created their own caterpillars and then went outside hunting for them in our garden.
Nursery Planting Sunflower Seeds

Today Nursery planted sunflower seeds. We recycled our used milk cartons and filled them with soil. Then we carefully pushed a sunflower seed in to the soil and gave it a little drink of water - not too much though! We didn't want to drown it! Then the children wrote their names on a lolly pop stick so they knew which sunflower was theirs. We talked about how we need to care for our seeds and make sure they have enough water and light to help them grow.
Reception A letter from the giant in the sky...

This week Reception had a very special letter delivered to our classroom. It was a letter for the giant in the sky who asked us to plant our very own magic beans outside in the garden. Together we discussed what we needed to do and thing we would need.

"I'm going to climb up my beanstalk and go and see the giant" Charlie
Whose we had planted our beans the children wrote some fantastic instructions back in the classroom.

This week nursery have continued to find out about growth and change. We have been keeping a close eye on our tiny caterpillars and they're not so tiny anymore! Infact, they're getting rather big! As well as watching the caterpillars grow, the children have also been planting seeds. We started with cress seeds and will be moving on to sunflower seeds later in the week! We have been talking about looking after the seeds and that we have to make sure we keep them watered to help them grow. We have also been using different types of bricks to build the tallest bean stalk and practising matching numeral and quantity using seeds.
Year 2 Investigating how plants grow

This half term, Year Two are exploring plants focusing on the key questions how do they grow? What do they need to grow? To investigate over time we planted some runner beans in a plastic bag with water to watch how it germinates as well as planting our own sunflower seeds. We are pleased to report after a week, our beans have begun to germinate when they have water and the right temperature. Also, most of our sunflowers have turned into seedlings and we are going to continue monitoring how much they grow each week. We are loving checking on them each morning and it's especially exciting now we can see how they grow.

Thursday 21st April saw Year 5 have a day full of learning about Science!
The first activity of the day was 'Smashing Stereotypes' hosted by Primary Futures. This event had different types of scientists giving us clues about their jobs and we had to guess what they did. There was a pharmacist, perfume-maker and a plastic developer!
For the rest of the day, we investigated the Gentoo Penguin and did lots of exciting activities about the animal and where it lives.
We then talked about why we had a Science Day and what information we had learnt.

Year 5 have been learning about the unit of Science, 'Living Things and their Habitats'. In this unit, we have started to look at the reproduction process of different plants. Children were fascinated to find out there are flowering plants (sexual) and non-flowering plants (asexual) plants!
To start our learning journey off, the children were given the task of dissecting a daffodil. This was in order for us to explore the plant and its different parts, and learn about the different functions of each part.
We all really enjoyed doing this practical activity and learnt so much about flowers and plants!
Year 3 Investigating how liquids affect plant growth!

In Year Three we have been investiagting what plants need in order to grow. This week we have been looking at how different liquids affect the rate in which plants will grow. We used post-it note planning to consider what varibales we could change or keep the same and then planned out our experiment. We then planted cress and will continue to pour tea, water, cola, milk and plant food and measure the plant's growth rate.

It was Science Day last Thursday at Boundary and what a day we had! We focussed on the importance of looking after and reusing our clothes. We carried out an experiment to see which washing detergent would best clean a stained piece of fabric. We stained a t-shirt with black coffee and then tried and tested three different detergents to see which would be the most effective. We discussed how much carbon dioxide is produced throughout the fashion industry and what happens to the clothes and the microplastics they contain when they are thrown away and sent to landfill.
