Reception have been reading the story 'The Three Little Pigs'. We have been very busy acting out the story using puppets, writing about our favourite part of the story, making houses out of cardboard boxes and collaging paper plates to create our favourite characters. We learnt that "bricks are strong" and that is why our houses are built from them!

This week we have been planting potatoes in our outdoor area. We worked together, sharing the tools and helping each other dig the holes. It was a rainy day and we were very dirty when we had finished! In a few months time, with some sunshine and (more) rain, they should be ready for digging up and eating- we can't wait!

Today was the second day of our DT unit on making pizzas. We began the day by making the dough - we did this by following a simple recipe for the BBC
Date: 7th May 2021 @ 8:13am
Today we began our DT journey of making pizzas. We looked at what we already knew about pizzas, including how we make them. We began by tasting pizzas and evaluating what we liked/disliked. After that, we went into Redcliffes to make our pizza sauce. We read through the pizza sauce recipe and weighed out and measured the ingredients we needed. Then, we all had a go at chopping and peeling onions and garlic. After that, we mixed together all of the other ingredients: tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano, basil, brown sugar and a bay leaf. We then heated the sauce through for 20 mins and set it cool. At the end of the day, we blitzed the sauce to make it smooth.

The Nursery children love enjoying the outdoors. It is a great place for them to learn and they can use so many skills when they access the outdoor area. This week they have been painting on cling film which has been great for their physical development, looking for worms to go in our homemade wormery and exploring number and cause and effect in the water.
Turning Negatives to Positives!
Date: 5th May 2021 @ 7:14pm
We have been busy over the past few weeks thinking about Healthy lifestyles. During DT day, we learned about making a healthy tortilla pin wheel using different ingredients; we learned about eating food in moderation and having lots of fruit and vegetables for the vitamins and minerals they give our bodies!
We also talked about having a healthy balance of work and play for our mental health, doing exercise and some mindfulness, having positive self-talk and resilience. We talked about turning the negatives into positives and how we can make sure that we appreciate and know what we are good at. For example

As part of the whole school DT week, Nursery made fruit jellies. The children tasted different types of fruit including strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and decided which fruits they would like to put in their jelly. Then, they very carefully cut up some fruits ready to put in the jelly pots. Have a look at the photos and follow the instructions to make your own delicious fruit jelly!
DT Day- Reception make fruit jelly pots!
Date: 27th Apr 2021 @ 4:59pm
Today in Reception the children have been designing and making their own fruit jelly pots ready for our whole school Olympics opening ceremony buffet. As a class we started off by looking at a range of different fruits. We described what they looked like, how they felt and were even lucky enough to taste them.

Today was Design Technology day in Year 5. Our focus was cooking, specifically savoury scones. We started the day by learning about nutrients, healthy eating and food safety, before moving on to research and then taste various savoury products. We created design criteria and then practiced the skills we would need including weighing, measuring and combining butter and flour by rubbing in. After baking our scones, we evaluated the final product but all the children agreed that they were delicious!

The children in Reception have started doing daily challenges! Each day the whole class are set a challenge which they have to carry out on their own in order to receive a Challenge Medal! This is to encourage independent learning- they can do it whenever they want but it must be completed by lunchtime! They were very excited to take control of their own learning and very proud to wear a medal. Take a look at some of our photos.

This week we remembered Captain Sir Tom Moore and how much he fundraised for the NHS by completing 100 laps of his garden. He was inspirational and embodied the British Values and fighting spirit throughout the Covid Pandemic. We completed our own Challenge 100, by doing 100 of anything.
In Forest school some people collected 100 flowers or pinecones, did 100 star jumps, built their own tower and completed 100 leaps! Some people even made 100 sparks!

As part of our PSHE topic of learning how to keep ourselves safe, we created role play situations in small groups demonstrating the dangers of particular hazards and how we could take steps to stay safe. We also played a safety board game in pairs.
Fee, Fie, Foe, Fum! There's a lot of planting to be done!

Today in Recepetion a mystery letter delivered to the classroom. The children were so excited to see who it was from. The giant in the sky had sent us some magical beans and set us an important task of growing a beanstalk, just like the one in Jack's garden. As a group we talked about the different things a plant needs to grow big and healthy including; water, sunlight and nutrients from the soil.

In PSHE we have been learning about Fire Safety! We learnt 3 key rules:
1. Get out
2. Stay out
3. Call 999
We also learnt that if there is smoke in the room, it will rise. This means that if we were ever in a fire we should stay low! We practised crawling out of the room and using the back of hand to test the door temperature. We also learnt about stop, drop and roll! We are now clued up on what to do in the event of a fire and we know how to actively prevent fires in the home.

As a class we have been talking about the different changes we have noticed over the past few weeks. These have included; new plants growing, buds on trees, daffodils in our garden, blossom on trees and new life. This afternoon the children paired up and went outside with their clip boards to complete their spring checklist in the forest school area. The children enjoyed looking around the forest school area to find different signs of spring.
"Look Mrs Clark, a bird has made a nest in the tree. The birds are going to lay their eggs" Elliott
"The blossom is growing on the trees" Ellie-Mae
"The trees have buds on them. The leaves are going to grow" Harley-May
"The temperature is warmer today" Ella-Rose
Making animal habitats at Forest School
Date: 19th Mar 2021 @ 10:10am
This week at Forest School the children enjoyed learning about animals and their habitats. We talked about different habitas and what animals need to survive. The children then worked together to collect sticks, leaves, grass and stones in their buckets and used them to create their own animal homes.
"I'm putting leaves in mine to keep the animals warm" Ellie-Mae
"We are sticking the sticking in the ground to make a wall" Arthur.
Then we explored the Forest School area and looked for different animal footprints in the mud.
Afterwards we were made a fire to boil the water ready for our warm vimto drink. We talked about how to keep ourselves safe whilst making a fire. The we discussed the three different elements we need to make a fire; heat, wood and air.
"Lisa wears a special fire glove so she doesn't burn her hand' Lyra-Rose
"Never go in the middle of the circle beacuse you might get burnt" Oscar.
At the end of the session we enjoyed a lovely drink of warm vimto and sang some songs around the fire.

In today's PE lessons we looked at different skills we would need as part of 'Invasion Games'. Today's skill was 'dodging'. We had to remember to look where we were going (keeping our heads up) in order to effectively dodge opponents who were coming towards us. For one of our activities we worked in groups of 4/5 where we held hands in a circle by holding plastic bands. One member of the group had a bib tucked into their waist band and they are the ones to be defended. The catcher then had 30 seconds to try and catch that person's bib whilst the group worked together to defend them by blocking the attacker. As you can see from the pictures, we had a great lesson!
Holly Class Forest School Fun!
Date: 11th Mar 2021 @ 8:47pm
It was a very breezy day but Holly Class wrapped up warm and ventured out to take part in Forest School.
First, we warmed up by playing running games and hide a seek and then we used our beady eyes to look for circles in the environment. We found them everywhere, on a bench, on logs and canes, at the bird stop, in plant pots and even in the pond (which had lots of frog spawn!). We then went exploring, trampiing through the soggy grass, raking the mud to plant grass seeds and building towers and seats to sit on using the logs. Alfie even found a frog! The children worked together, helping each other to lift, build, carry and explore.
By the time it was time to go, we were all very muddy and and very hungry. Before we went to lunch, Mrs McAllister hosed all the children down which was to their absolute delight!

This week in PSHE, we have been looking closely at making the right choices in class. We have identified appropriate behaviour during lesson time and break time and in some circumstances when it may be during both. We then learned about positive and negative consequences for our choices and how we can celebrate good choices during our Cedar Time.
Cedar children have been making great choices this week and had fun celebrating by the different choices of activity each day.
