Year 3: Blog items

Year 3- Snowflake art!

Date: 14th Dec 2022 @ 1:19pm

Today we were inspired by the story The Little Snowflake and created our own snowflakes. We used water colours, oil pastels and glitter to bring them to life.

Year 3- Christmas enterprise!

Date: 12th Dec 2022 @ 9:46am

In preparation for our christmas fair on Wednesday the children in Year Three have been busy learning all about enterprise. We decided to make reindeer hot chocolates that we are going to sell. We worked as part of a team to make them, filling the bags, adding marshmallows and decorating the outside to make the best product to sell.

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 12:14pm

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

In Year 1 we read the story 'The Jolly Christmas Postman.' We began by sequencing the key events, discussing the characters and the meaning of key words. We then moved onto reading letters from different characters, matching the correct letter to the correct address and piecing together a mixed up letter. On 1st December our class elves arrived and brought a letter with them for us to read, but some bits were missing! We then used what we had learnt about letters to fill in the missing features. We will be writing our own letters this week.

In Year 2, we are in the process of writing our own Christmas story inspired by the 2019 John Lewis advert featuring Edgar the dragon. Throughout the journey, we have read a range of Christmas stories and watched a selection of different Christmas adverts to explore how they tell a story through videos. We have now planned out our story and are looking forward to writing them up.

In Year Three we have been exploring shape poems surrounding the theme of Christmas. We have focused on using alliteration, similes and metaphors to create an imaginative description.

In Year 4, we have been working on our play script journey. To begin with, we read a variety of play scripts to identify their features. We then went on to do some drama and act out some of the scenes that we read. We are going to be basing our final pieces on the Boudicca Revolt which is what we learnt about last half term.

In Year 5 we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We read and analysed stories from the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and then created a list of features particular to that type of story. 'The Dreamtime' is the Aboriginal people's creation stories, they usually explain how the world came to be, and how animals were created. We planned, drafted and edited our own Dreamtime story, before publishing our final piece of writing. After writing our final version, we peer-assessed our texts by discussing what we had written with a partner.

In Year 6 we have spent time exploring, planning and writing crime stories. We looked at several full stories at the start of the journey and began pulling out features of crime stories. Then we worked together to generate as much vocabulary as possible relating to the genre so that we would have a bank of high quality words to choose from when we wrote our own stories. We had fun writing our stories and typing them up at the end as a finished piece.

Year 3 Listening and performing in Music

Date: 30th Nov 2022 @ 4:24pm

In Year 3 we have been doing lots of listening and describing with our new Musical Vocabulary mats. We have discussed the key vocabulary and thought about how we can use it to describe the pieces of music that we have listened to. We have improved our use of sentence starters because we now have examples. We have started to think about our Christmas songs and have begun to learn about the musical score, treble clef and time signature. We started to play the glockenspeil to Jingle Bells!

Year 3- Fantastic fossils!

Date: 29th Nov 2022 @ 1:22pm

In Science, Year 3 have been investigating what fossils are and how they were formed. We completed a carousel of activities to expand our knowledge. We used secondary sources to gather and present information, used magnifying glasses to examine fossils specimens and even made our own fossils!

Year 3- What makes a good role model?

Date: 29th Nov 2022 @ 1:16pm

In R.E we were exploring a wide variety of stories surrounding Prophet Muhammed. We explored which characteristics he demonstrated and how these made him role model. We created a freeze frame from the stories that pin- pointed the most important part of each. We had to explain why it was the most important section. Then we identified what characteristics, message and how he was portrayed as a role model. We then had to teach other groups what we had found.

Year 3- Dancing with charcoal!

Date: 29th Nov 2022 @ 1:05pm

In Art, Year Three have been exploring how to draw with charcoal. We were inspired this week by the artist Heather Hansen who mixes art with dance! We noticed that with gestural drawing we use long sweeping movements and the use of our whole body to create our masterpieces!

Year 3- BFC tackle bullying!

Date: 14th Nov 2022 @ 2:56pm

Today we celebrated Anti-bullying Day. As a school, we came in wearing odd socks to show that we are all individual yet all special in our own way. As part of our anti-bullying learning, Year 3 were lucky enough to have a session with Simon and Mark from Blackpool Football Club. We learnt how important it is to be an upstander and not a bystander. Together we can tackle bullying! We also learnt the importance of kindness and created our own kindness jars. We finished the session off by watching a powerful video of acts of kindness being passed on and we made a pledge to carry out our own act of kindness this week.

Year 3- Investiagting Igneous Rocks

Date: 14th Nov 2022 @ 2:24pm

In this lesson we worked scientifically to plan an investigation surrounding the crystal size in Igneous rocks. We identified that we were going to change the temperature, we had three containers that had ice, cotton wool and air in. We will observe over the next 24 hours and see if our predictions were correct.

Year 3- French

Date: 10th Nov 2022 @ 9:19am

This week in French, we have recapped the vowels a, e, I, o, u and focussed on the new sounds ch, ou, on, oi. We have used the words to help us to remember the sounds. We also used our knowledge organisers to help us to recap the sounds. As well as this we practised the French alphabet and recapped colours by singing songs and playing games.

Year 3- Chocolate Rocks!

Date: 10th Nov 2022 @ 9:16am

In Science this week, we demonstrated how metamorphic rocks are made by using chocolate! We started off with white and milk chocolate. We then cut it into small pieces to demonstrate erosion. This made sediments which we then applied pressure to and squashed together to make a sedimentary rock. Once we had formed this rock, we applied heat to the rock and then allowed it to cool. This made a metamorphic rock. At the end of the lesson, we cut our rocks open and discovered the different colours and layers in our rocks.

Year 3- Poppy art

Date: 4th Nov 2022 @ 4:19pm

As we get closer to Remembrance Day Year Three have been using charcoal to draw poppies. We experimented with water colours, oil pastels and felt tips to create the red poppies.

Year 3- Rugby

Date: 4th Nov 2022 @ 4:08pm

This week in Year Three we had our first rugby session with Wigan Warriors. The children enjoyed learning how to learn how to hold the ball properly and dodging their opponents. We also worked well as a team playing a wide range of games and look forward to learn new skills in the coming weeks.

Year 3 Samba!

Date: 20th Oct 2022 @ 7:47am

Bracken class have been lucky enough to have samba lessons this half term. We have been learning about a variety of instruments and learning to play in time with each other.

Year 3- Prototypes

Date: 17th Oct 2022 @ 7:55am

In DT, we made prototypes. Some of us used cotton but some used felt! We discovered that it was much easier to use fabric pens on cotton and therefore we think this would be a better material for the final design. When we evaluated the prototypes, we decided that the colouring needed to be much needed and that small areas of colour would be easier. We tried different sizes and decided that 20cm x 20cm was a good size. Next time, we would use more resources such as felt, buttons and sequins to make the designs more interesting.

Year 3- Magnets!

Date: 17th Oct 2022 @ 7:48am

In Science we started to look at magnets. We discovered that magnets have a north and south pole. We spent some time exploring whcih attract and which repel each other. We then went on to investigate what materials were magnetic. We learnt that metal objects were magnetic but this did not include aluminium, copper or gold! We then went on to plan an investegation for next week answering the question 'Which magnet  is the strongest?'

Year Three- Amazing algorithms

Date: 6th Oct 2022 @ 4:04pm

In computing we looked at using Scratch to create an algorithm to make our sprite move. We had to carefully think about how many degrees we wanted our sprite to turn and how many steps it needed to move to make a pattern. We looked at changing the colour of the pen and even the size.

Year 3 School Council Elections

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 10:32am

Year 3 voted for their school council representatives. We discussed democracy and why it is important to our school and communitiy. The children presented their manifestos and we then voted. Congratulations to Jake and Alexander who were chosen to represent Year 3.

Year 3 Dear Diary

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 10:29am

In Reading into Writing, we have started learning about diaries. Today we started our immersion into reading and read a variety of WAGOLLs. We idenitfied the main points of the texts and began to idenitfy the features that linked in the texts. We did this in pairs and then joined to make a four and share our findings.

Year 3's Trip to The Royal Ballet

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 10:26am

Year 3 had a very exciting trip to The Globe Theatre to watch ballet. We were lucky enough to learn new moves and watch the students of The Royal Ballet School dance. We were also shocked when one of our students were picked to be lifted by a ballet dancer!

Year 3 are super seamstresses!

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 2:51pm

In Design & Technology today we practised the running stitch. This was a stitch we were familiar with and therefore it was good to practise and refresh our minds. Those of us that mastered the running stitch moved on to learning the backstitch. This is in preperation for making our very own cushions!

Year 3- Our First Royal Ballet Experience!

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 8:03am

In Year 3, we were lucky enough to have our first Royal Ballet workshop today. We learnt some new French vocabulary and ballet moves. We were accompanied by a brilliant musician to dance to. The children really enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to the rest of the workshops.

Year 3- Why do our hands warm up when we rub them together?

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 7:57am

In Science we explore the question 'Why do our hands warm up when we rub them together?' In order to answer this question we carried out a range of activities, exploring friction. We used balloons to create friction, we watched videos, we identified how forces and friction is used in sports and finally we investigated the difference in rubbing our hands when we used rubber gloves. We discovered that friction is created when two surfaces rub together.

Year 3 Exploring Cushions!

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 7:52am

In DT we explore a variety of cushions, ready to eventually make our own. We evaluated them based on their design, comfort and how well they were joined. As a class we discussed the pros and cons for each cushion and ordered them from best to worst. We will now use inspiration from these when designing and making our final pieces.

Year 3 Exploring Explanation Texts

Date: 7th Sep 2022 @ 4:45pm

During our Reading into Writing session today, we continued to identify the features of an explanation text. We focused on 4 features today: title, conjuntions, time connnectives and technical vocabulary. We worked together to unpick WAGOLLs and find these features. We used our findings to collate a bank of good examples as a class.
