Year 3: Blog items

Year 3 - Subtraction across a 10

Date: 30th Oct 2024 @ 9:35pm

We used Base 10 to subtract 1's across a ten.  We had to 'exchange' a ten rod for ten 1's in order to subtract. We noticed that when we exchanged the tens, we still had the same amount, it was just represented differently. For example 126 can be represented as 1 hundred plate, 2 tens and 6 ones or it can be represented as 1 hundred plate, 1 ten and 16 ones.  Developing this understanding will help us when we start to subtract using the column method.

Year 3- Ballet performance!

Date: 28th Oct 2024 @ 4:51pm

To finish off our Ballet workshop, Year 3 invited people from home to come and watch them in action. They were very excited to show what they had learnt including, spotting and jumping. The children even showed off their Stone Age dance that had linked to our History topic. We incorporated key facts from our History lessons about how people from the Stone Age lived and created key movements to represent these facts.

Year 3 - Pencil Cases

Date: 17th Oct 2024 @ 9:13pm

We have worked hard on following our final designs to create our pencil cases.  We had to put all the skills we had practised into action including tying knots, threading needles and completing a running stitch.  Some of us even used zips and buttons so we had to apply our skills to something new!  We did a great job in following our designs and showed resilience, creativity and persistence in abundance whilst creating our final pieces.  Well done Year 3!

Year 3- RE

Date: 17th Oct 2024 @ 9:47am

In RE we have been learning all about Christianity (God) and we focused on the question of how (and why) have some people served God? We began thinking of what makes a good leader and discussed different famous people that have been leaders and role models to people in the past. We shared our opinions with one another and created a booklet for the qualities that makes a good leader. We recapped what is the bible? What is the old testament? We then read and understood all about the two stories, ‘story of the Moses’ and ‘Noah’s Ark.’ In pairs we shared our ideas as to what do we learn from the stories? Why do you think Christians follow God? We then compared the two stories thinking about how people felt when they heard God? As a class we discussed what life of service means and then looked at three Christians who have served a life of service. We thought about their role, the impact they had on other people and how they had a positive effect on others by being helpful. We discussed what the word vocation means and linked it to the role of a church leader. We researched how a church leader serves in church, but also in the community. We then carried our research as a class to find out about The Salvation Army and how it links to how Christians serve others? We shared ideas as to what Christians do for the community and the positive impact the Salvation Army has on the world. We applied everything we have learnt to then our personal life to think, are we good examples to others? Also, who inspires us?

Year 3 - Magnetic Investigation

Date: 13th Oct 2024 @ 2:37pm

We have been investigating magnetic strength and how magnets can act at a distance.  We started off by seeing if a magnet was strong enough to lift a paperclip off the table.  We were amazed to see that we could make the paperclip hover in the air.  This was because the magnetic force was pulling the paperclip towards it.

We then conducted an investigation into magnet strength. We wanted to find out if the size of a magnet affected its strength.  We measured the distance that a magnet could attract a metal ball from.  From the magnets we used, we concluded that the larger magnets had the strongest magnetic pull.  We also found out that a magnetic force can act from a distance so it doesn't need to be touching a magnetic object to attract it.

Year 3 - Iron Age Investigators

Date: 13th Oct 2024 @ 2:31pm

Following on from our learning about the Stone Age, we started to investigate how life changed during the Iron Age.  We studied the Iron Age settlement, Danebury and completed some paired work.  One of the tasks was to examine the arial photograph of Danebury and discuss what we thought the holes may be.  Some of our ideas were shelters, wells and tunnels.  We then found out that they were storage pits were they hid grain as it was such a precious resource to them.  Our other paired task was to study a photograph of artefacts found at the Danebury site and try and figure out what they were and what that tells us about how people lived in the Iron Age.

We also studied an illustration of an Iron Age hill fort.  We thought about what we could see and then what we could work out from what we could see.  For example, we saw a plough so we could work out that they were farming and we saw a dog so we could work out that they kept pets.We also thought about questions we had from the picture.  Some of our questions included: Why are there antlers on poles?  and Why is there a wall and a gate?

Spelling Bee

Date: 8th Oct 2024 @ 3:55pm

Today we held our first Spelling Bee of the year. Each house was represented by the best spellers from Year 2 - Year 6 and the children were tested on spellings they have been learning in Autumn 1. We are very proud of all the children for being their house representative and spelling some very tricky words in front of the whole school. The over all winners were Bathurst, who managed to spell 14/15 spellings across all 5 years groups.

Year 3- Mighty magnets!

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 3:46pm

In Science, we were testing which materials were attracted to a magnet. We made predictions on each object and then tested it with a magnet. The children were excited to find out that objects made of metal were attracted to metal, but we found out not all metal is magnetic.

Year 3- Ordering numbers!

Date: 3rd Oct 2024 @ 3:34pm

In Maths, we have been looking at ordering numbers. We looked at putting numbers is ascending and descending order. The children had to pick a range of numbers and put them into the correct order.

Year 3 - Data handling

Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 4:11pm

We used the data we gathered from our Science experiment to create digital bar graphs using an online data program.  We labelled the axis, gave the data a title and input the results carefully.  Once the bar graph was complete we then analysed the data.

We found that the car moved much further down the ramp of smooth wood and it travelled the least down the ramp covered in bubblewrap.  This is because there was less friction between the car wheels and the smooth surface and more friction between the wheels and the uneven surface of the bubblewrap.

Year 3- Ballet performance at the Globe Theatre.

Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 4:47pm

In Year Three we had a really exciting trip! After completing more lessons with the Royal Ballet teachers on Wednesday, we went to The Globe Theatre to watch Junior associates and members of the Royal Ballet school perform! Year Three were really inspired by these children and loved seeing how much they could spin and how high they could jump!

Year 3- Voting day!

Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 4:45pm

Today was all about democracy in Year Three. After preparing and writing our manifestos, the hopeful candidates presented in front of the class. We then went into the hall to cast our votes for our new school council member.

Year 3- Making music!

Date: 26th Sep 2024 @ 4:43pm

In Music, Year Three were very excited to use the glockenspiels. They enjoyed moving from the bar notes to the bigger instruments and learning all about the different sharp and flat notes. We did some listening and repeating of tunes and thought about how many notes we needed to play in a bar.

European Day of Languages

Date: 23rd Sep 2024 @ 4:41pm

Today we celebrated the European Day of Languages by holding a special assembly. We talked about why it is important to know about other languages and cultures and how this might help us when we grow up. We discussed the characteristics that you need to learn a language including enthusiasm, curiosity, perseverance and self motivation. We ended with a languages quiz and learned a greeting song in French.

Year 3 - 1, 10, 100 More and Less

Date: 19th Sep 2024 @ 8:34pm

We have been working on finding 1, 10 and 100 more than any given number up to 1000.  We have been using the place value counters to help us see what changes when we subtract or add these amounts and what stays the same.We looked for patterns when adding and subtracting 10 and 100 and we noticed that the ones digit will always stay the same when adding or subtracting 10 or 100. "I've noticed that they all have 6 in the ones column." - Jamaal

Year 3- Brilliant ballet!

Date: 19th Sep 2024 @ 11:53am

Year Three loved having teachers and a live musician visit from the Royal Ballet School. Each week the children will have lessons to teach them key ballet skills. The enjoyed doing a reverence and learning a port de bra. Next week we will be going on a trip to watch some of the Royal Ballet students in action.

Year 3 - Ramp Investigation

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 9:05pm

During our Science unit, Forces and Magnets, we conducted an investigation to find out how a car would travel on different surfaces. We thought about how we would keep our investigation fair, what we would change, what we would keep the same and what we would measure.  We also made predictions before carrying out the investigation in small groups,  We recorded our results in a table and during our next Science session we will think about what the results tell us.

Year 3 - Flexible Partitioning

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 8:50pm

Year Three have been working on flexibly partitioning numbers to 1000.  We have been using part-part-part whole models and place value counters to help us see how the same 3-digit number can be partitioned in many different ways.

Year 3- Fantastic France!

Date: 11th Sep 2024 @ 4:46pm

In French, we looked at France and where places are in the country. We used our atlas to locate different towns and cities in France. We also looked at famous French people, food and inventions. The children enjoyed learning about France and now we will begin to learn to speak the language!

Year 3 - DT - Investigating existing products and Market Research

Date: 9th Sep 2024 @ 9:05pm

To begin our DT journey, we looked at a range of existing pencil cases.  We thought about what material they had been made from, how they had been joined, who the user was and how they opened and closed.  We  found most of the pencil cases were made from fabric and stitched together.  Some pencil cases were made from wood or leather but these were less common.  We also conducted some market research.  We created a google form to gather data on what users would want from a pencil case.  We thought about what we would need to put in a pencil case, the shape, the design, the material and how the case would close.

We then analysed the data to see what it told us.   Our results showed that a character design is most popular. Those surveyed also wanted a soft pencil case that they could carry in their bags. We also found out that most children wanted lots of different things in their pencil case, so when we design our cases we need to make sure we have enough room and potentially a pocket for organising.

Year 3 - Place Value

Date: 5th Sep 2024 @ 9:25am

Year 3 started their maths learning by recapping what we remember about 2-digit numbers.  We have been looking at how 2-digit numbers are composed of tens and ones and we have also been looking at how we can flexibly partition 2-digit numbers in a range of ways.  Our next step is to introduce hundreds and then begin to look at the place value in 3-digit numbers.

Year 3 - Music

Date: 5th Sep 2024 @ 9:12am

We started our Music learning in Year 3 by recapping the Elements of Music.  We reminded ourselves of the key vocabulary: tempo, allegro, adagio, texture and melody.

We then listened to a country song called 'Home is where the heart is' and used the listening mats to help us describe what we could hear.  We also compared it with the Dolly Parton piece, 'Jolene'.

The next part of our journey will be focusing on pitch and structure as we learn to sing 'Home is where the heart is'.

Year 3- Light!

Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 2:51pm

In this lesson we recapped our knowledge of light! We conducted an investigation to see if the length of the shadow was affected by the distance of the light source.

Year 3- Farm visit!

Date: 11th Jul 2024 @ 2:47pm

Year 3 were lucky to have a visit from the fantastic farm! We loved seeing all the different animals. We got to pet, stroke, feed and brush them !

Boundary Choral Speaking competition

Date: 9th Jul 2024 @ 2:46pm
