This half term we have been looking at our Core Vocabulary and Phonetics lessons. In this unit we will cover some of the common phonemes found in French words. We will also learn some core vocabulary that will help us with French lessons in Year 3.

Year 4 have been learning the question, "Comment tu-t'appelles?" which means what is your name and how to answer.
In the video clips, the children are asking each other their names. They then used this knowledge and applied it to expand their conversation in French as they have used a greeting, asked how the other is feeling and have been able to answer.

This half term we have been learning in French how to talk about animals. We have improved our pronunciation of the animals, asked questions, introduced the characters and said if our animals have a name. We have also learned the negative 'Je ne pas' and started to use the connective but 'mais' to explain different examples. We did some excellent listening tasks too!

Today, we recapped the phonemes è, é, e, eau, eux. We did some listening tasks where we had to listen for the correct phoneme. Then we moved on to looking at the days of the week. We recapped how to pronounce them, put them in the correct order and had a go at asking each other what day it is today and responding.

Today we celebrated the European Day of Languages by holding a special assembly. We talked about why it is important to know about other languages and cultures and how this might help us when we grow up. We discussed the characteristics that you need to learn a language including enthusiasm, curiosity, perseverance and self motivation. We ended with a languages quiz and learned a greeting song in French.

This half term, Year 6 will be learning about grammar in their French lessons. We started by looking at indefinite articles - un and une, the French words for 'a'. We recapped on the fact that French nouns have a gender and that un is used for masculine nouns and une is used for feminine nouns. We used French dictionaries to find the gender of nouns.

In French, we looked at France and where places are in the country. We used our atlas to locate different towns and cities in France. We also looked at famous French people, food and inventions. The children enjoyed learning about France and now we will begin to learn to speak the language!

Our French topic this half term has been 'Le Weekend' (The Weekend). We learned how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes in French before learning ten phrases for the activities we may do. After learning opinion phrases, we then constructed longer sentences and paragraphs to describe the weekend. We used French dictionaries to check unfamiliar words.

Today we continued our 'En Classe' unit in French. But today we focused on our speaking skills and how to say when we DO NOT have certain items.
Year 6 - Opinions about school subjects in French

Year 6 continued their unit based on school subjects. After learning how to tell the time in French to the nearest hour, the children went on to create longer sentences which involved saying what day and time they study a particular subject. They also completed a listening activity which focused on children's opinions about school subjects. Everyone did really well.
Year 6 - Reading written French

Year 6 ended their French unit, Les Vikings, by writing a description of a Viking using everthing they have learned over the last few weeks. They then practiced reading them out loud using their French phonic knowledge to perfect their pronunciation.
Year 4 - French numbers to 100!

Year 6 - Describing hair in French

In our French lesson this week we have been learning how to describe hair by colour, length and style. After learning the correct vocabulary, we played a game of French 'Guess Who'. We then described our own hair to each other. The children worked really hard and used their knowledge of French phonics to perfect their pronunciation.

This half term our French unit is 'Les Vikings' and runs alongside our Viking history unit. We started by using our knowledge of familiar language and cognates to translate several passages of French into English. We used French dictionaries to look up the meaning of any words we did not know. We then completed a short listening activity where we had to insert words from the spoken passage into a written paragraph. Throughout the unit we will be learning a song 'Nous Sommes Les Vikings' (We are the Vikings).

Year 5 have worked really hard in our French lessons this half term. They have been learning about animals and how to say what animals they do have and don't have in French. They have looked at masculine and feminine animals to help them to correctly form the sentences in French.

This half term we have been learning to present ourselves. We have learned to answer the questions "Common tu t'appelle?", "Quel âge as tu?" and "Où habites-tu?" We have also been responding to the questions "Ca va?". Lots of our work has been verbal, but here's some of our written work.

This half term the children have been learning the phonetics of French. They have recapped the numbers to 10, days of the week, the months and colours.

Year 6 have worked really hard in our French sessions this half term. They have learned the personal pronouns in French and how to conjugate a verb. We have improved our dictionary skills by finding infinitve verbs and their meanings and finished our journey by learning about the four common irregular verbs.

This half term in French, we have been recapping the vocabulary we have learned in previous year groups. We have counted to twenty, discussed different colours and flashed back to the names of the days and the months. In the final two lessons, we focussed on classroom commands and instructions, that we use during our French lessons and at other times in the school day.
Year 4- Core Vocabulary and Phonetics

This half-term, Year 4 have been recapping core vocabulary from Year 3 such as numbers to 20, colours, days of the week, days of the month and months of the year. We have also learnt the essential French sounds and vowels. We have recapped and practised these sounds and words through a range of methods. For example, we used a song to recap the days of the week. We are looking forward to becoming more confident with our French speaking next half-term!

In this week's French lesson, we continued learning about French grammar. We looked in more depth at the gender of nouns. We used French dictionaries to find the correct gender and then added the appropriate definate article (le, la, les or l'). Some children completed a challenge where they had to add the correct ending to make the noun plural.
Year 4 - European Day of Languages

Year 4 had a great day celebrating European Day of Languages. In assembly, the House Captains particpated in a language quiz, then the children took part in a treasure hunt around the KS2 playground. Questions were based on languages, culture and the geography of European Countries.
Year 6 - European Day of Languages

Year 6 had a great day celebrating European Day of Languages. After assisting with a whole school assembly, where the House Captains particpated in a language quiz, the children took part in a treasure hunt around the playground. Questions were based on languages, culture and the geography of European Countries. The winning team scored full marks!

Today Year 6 continued the grammar unit in their French lesson. First, we recapped on last week's learning - the gender of nouns and indefinite articles. We moved on to learn about definite articles and found out that in French there are four words for 'the' (le, la, l' and les). We then used French dictionaries to find out the gender of nouns and write the nouns with their correct definite article.

This week in French club we learned all about French cheeses. There are over 350 different types of cheese that originate from France and we tasted some of them this afternoon. All of the children enjoyed brie but the French goats cheese was not a favourite!.
