Support for LGBTQ+ Children: Blog items

Yesterday, we took part in some Rainbow Laces activities. We learned all about the LGBT+ community. We looked at four sportsmen and women and we had to draw a picture what we thought these sportsmen and women look like. This introduced stereotypes. We looked at the meaning of the colours of the Rainbow Laces flag; red=life, blue=harmony, purple=spirit, yellow=sun light, green= nature, orange=heeling. Everyone can join in with different sports and anything in life and we shouldn't treat people differently, whether they look different to you or have different opinions to you. The children were very sensible and we had some great discussions.

The children in Reception have enjoyed celebrating Anti-bullying Week by coming into school wearing wonderfully mismatched socks. We took part in a whole school assemble via Google Meet learning about what bullying is and what to do if we are affected by it. In class we looked at our similarities and differences and learnt that everyone is different and it is our differences that make us unique. We talked about how we should treat everyone fairly regardless of our differences. The children also enjoyed designing their own odd socks.

Today the children in reception celebrated odd socks day by wearing odd sock to school. We talked about how the children are similar and different and the children made some fantastic comments. We used mirrors to look at our faces and discussed our likes and dislikes. Here are some of the comments that the children made.
"Ihave brown hair but Jazmine's is yellow. It's different to mine"
"Some people have glasses to see but I don't need them"
"Mrs Farley is taller than Mrs Clark"
"Some people have brown skin but they are still my friend because they like batman like me"
"If your different it doesn't matter. If we looked the same you wouldn't know who we was"
The children then enjoyed collaging and painting their very own odd socks!

This week we have been learning more about our families and where we live. We have talked about who lives in our house, and made a family tree, using a different leaf for each persons name. We have made shape houses, and talked about how many family members we in each house. We have also thought about people who are special to us, including our friends!Â
This week we have also decorated cookies for MacMillan Coffee morning. We made the icing using icing sugar and water, mixing it together until it formed the paste. We then spread it over the biscuits, before adding sprinkles onto the top!
Rainbow Laces Day; Celebrating Diversity

This week we have been taking part in ‘Rainbow Laces Day’ which is a chance to celebrate diversity and learn about the importance of respecting other people’s differences. We learned about a variety of sports people who are all LGBT, including Tom Daley and Colin Jackson. We discussed that all people are worthy of respect and it is wrong to disrespect people because they are LGBT.

On Rainbow Laces day, we learnt about stereotyping in sport. We discussed who imagined when we said the sports: gymnastics, ballet, football and swimming. We looked at famous males and females in these sports and the amazing accomplishments that they have achieved. By the end of the session, we had a good understanding that it doesn’t matter what gender we are, we should play sports that interest us most.
We learnt that we should not stereotype people or judge them based on their looks or genders. Be who you want to be and do the things that make you smile!
