Year 3 - Adding across a ten and a hundred
Date: 14th Nov 2024 @ 8:29pm
We used place value mats and place value counters to practically add two 3-digit number across the tens and hundreds boundary. We physically 'exchanged' 10 ones for a ten before moving it into the tens column. We could see that although we had regrouped the ones, they were still worth the same, for example 13 ones is equal to 1 ten and 3 ones. We did the same when regrouping from the tens to the hundreds column. We used the mats and counters alongside the column method to help develop our understanding of the formal method.
