What is a SERF?
Blackpool Borough fund Boundary Primary school to have two Special Education Resource Facility for children in Blackpool. There are 4 specialist classrooms in schools across Blackpool that cater to meet the needs of children who show challenging behaviour.
While your child is in our care, at The Platform, we will aim to:
- Teach them to communicate their difficulties appropriately.
- Help them to make and keep positive relationships with their peers and adults.
- Develop their ability to recognise and respect the rights of others.
- Help them to take increasing responsibility for their own behaviour and to accept consequences.
- Help them to develop a more consistent level of self-control.
- Improve the child’s ability to manage the completion of set tasks.
- Significantly improve their self-esteem as learners through success.
- Transfer information and successful strategies between outside agencies and base school.
- Support the children’s base schools in managing challenging behaviour.
- Support the children’s base schools in reintegrating their pupils.

What will we learn?
In Platform 1, our morning curriculum is focused on English and Maths. Our priority is to assess any learning need the children might have and address them, whether they are academic or more personal. Children will be encouraged to be confident learners so that they are successful in return to their ‘base school’.
Learning and personal achievements are supported by lessons which are matched to assessed need, have differentiated and varied tasks and outcomes.
Children are also encouraged to be:
- Responsible for their own learning
- Active listeners
- Active seekers of solutions
- Positive communicators of their difficulties
- Confident (to have a go and make mistakes)
Our afternoon curriculum is based on learning key skills, knowledge and understanding for your child to be successful in your child’s ‘base school’.
Children experience learning opportunities through
- Individualised learning programmes
- Paired activities
- Group activities
- Circle time
Your child will learn with us for four days a week. On Wednesday they will return to their base school and practise using the strategies we have taught them. A member of SERF staff will visit your child every Wednesday.
Pupils arrive by 9.00am and are collected (by parents or taxi) at 3.00pm.
Each day consists of English and Maths. The morning playtime is at 10.30 and the children use the outdoor area attached to our classroom.
All Platform 1 pupils eat their lunch in the school hall alongside Boundary’s KS1 pupils. There is an established routine whereby additional pupils join the group for lunch playtime. It is SERF policy to invite/involve/include similarly aged pupils as frequently as possible in a range of activities.
The afternoon timetable begins at 1.00pm with a more topic-based approach. At 2.45pm the children participate in a group meeting to evaluate the day.
Platform 1 pupils all take part in PE on a Tuesday afternoon.
You will be invited to an induction meeting to meet the staff, see the classrooms and have the Platform 1 rules and routines explained to you. We will expect to see you at review meetings every half term that will be held at your child’s base school staff, SERF staff and you. These meetings will be to celebrate success and set future targets. Other agencies may also be invited as part of the support for your child.00
SERF staff will be available for you to talk at the beginning and end of each day if you have anything you wish to discuss.
Each pupil in Platform 1 has a home-school diary, a summary of your child’s day will be written in here and you will be invited to write any messages you may have for us too.
Our Rules and Rewards
Each child has personal targets that they need to work upon and improve but we also discuss our class rules as part of our daily routine. Rules and routines help us to work together fairly and enjoyable. At the end of every session, we reflect on our learning, our targets and our behaviour. We award points which when added up the lead to a reward. Points are lost through poor behaviour. Each child can earn up to a maximum of 60 points each day, this score will be recording in your child’s home-school diary.
For positive behaviour the children can earn 5 points for the session. For ‘above and beyond’ behaviour the children can earn a bonus this equates to 5 in their daily total. When a child earns a bonus, they get a sticker on their Bonus Chart. In Platform 1, children earn a ‘silver prize’ for every 5 bonuses and a ‘gold prize’ when they fill their bonus chart (25 in total).

Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviour
In the SERF, the following are seen as behaviours which are not acceptable:
- Physical Abuse
- Verbal Abuse
- Damage to property
- Disrespect of others’ learning
- Our Rules and Rewards celebrate success but also develop a sense of responsibility and ownership for our actions; included in this is developing strategies to deal with inappropriate behaviour in a more acceptable way.
The following steps are used when a child displays behaviour which is not acceptable:
- The child is reminded of the rules and given a way to help them make the right choices.
- If the behaviour continues or gets worse, they are asked a second time and reminded that they may need to take some time to think and calm down.
- If they are unable to calm or they refuse to comply and their actions are affecting the classroom, then a more significant approach will be used.
When the child has become calm and is self-controlled, they are ready to join the group. They will spend some time discussing and reflecting on the incident with their key worker so they can learn from it and move forward.
All staff are fully trained in positive handling techniques and this will only be used when ALL other means have been exhausted.
